Notes: Abstract The Raman spectrum of strontium titanate has been recorded using λ 4358 of mercury as exciter. The observed spectrum consists of 7 Raman lines, one of which is of low frequency, as expected from the recent theory of Cochran. 6 of these Raman lines have been interpreted as the first order spectrum arising from a small deviation of the cubic strontium titanate from its idealized symmetry. It has been shown that one normal mode of SrTiO3 neglected by J.T.Last, will be really active in infrared absorption in the region of 440 cm−1 and that it has to be taken into account in the interpretation of the infrared spectra of titanates. The four vibrational modes of the unit cell of SrTiO3 correspond to frequencies of 90, 335, 441 and 620 cm−1 observed in Raman effect. The large width of the Raman lines and the additional lines at 256 cm−1 and 726 cm−1 have been attributed to a splitting of the longitudinal and transverse optical modes. With the observed frequencies it has been found possible to account for in a satisfactory manner the specific heat of SrTiO3 in the range 54·84° K to 1800° K.

Notes: Abstract Semicarbazide hydrochloride (SEM.HCl) was reported to be a prototype of another possible family of ferroelectrics [Appl. Phys. Lett. 20, 49 (1972)]. The present dielectric, resistivity, thermal and infrared absorption studies carried out on SEM.HCl and SEM.HBr do not confirm this suggestion. However these studies reveal that some observable changes do occur in the thermal amplitude of the molecular cation with the lowering of temperature.

Notes: [Auszug] POTASSIUM bromide has a crystal structure similar to that of rocksalt; but as the ions in the former are heavier, the Raman frequency shifts are smaller and hence less easy to record in a satisfactory manner. Notes: Abstract Single crystals of K, Rb and Cs perchlorates have been grown by the counter diffusion of the respective ions and ClO 4 − through the gel medium. Studies on nucleation, growth kinetics, morphological aspects and purity are discussed in this paper. The dielectric constant, ε b, as well as loss measured along the longest axis, exhibits an anomaly at the transition temperature, T t, in all the three crystals. It is found that the peak values of T t are approximately 800, 100 and 53 in K, Rb and Cs perchlorates, respectively. The dielectric anomaly and the large value of ε b in the cubic phase are discussed in terms of the degree of disorder of the ClO 4 − group and the possible contribution from defects.

Notes: The Raman spectra of NaLa(MoO4)2 single crystal have been recorded and interpreted on the basis of C4h symmetry. The observed fundamentals (internal and external) have been assigned unambiguously with the help of polarization data. All the group theoretically predicted Raman active fundamentals have been observed.

Notes: Tellurc acid ammonium phosphate (TAAP) is a new class m ferroelectric with a transition temperature of 45°C. Structural data and preliminary spectroscopic studies confirmed the presence of N—H…O hydrogen bonds. Raman spectroscopic studies on this crystal were carried out in the temperature range 20-80 °C to look for possible spectral changes as a result of phase transition. A detailed analysis of the line width and frequencies was carried out across the phase transition in order to understand the nature of the phase transition. From the spectral features of the bands in different regions it is inferred that the groups TeO6, PO4 and NH4 do not undergo changes that could trigger the phase transition. On the other hand, the broadening of the bands in the range 2600-3400 cm-1 suggests the possibility of an order-disorder type of transition phenomenon involving hydrogen bonds. This is further supported by the shift of the transition temperature from 45 to 87°C on deuteration.

Notes: Polarized Raman spectra of single crystals of KIO4 and RbIO4 were obtained. The observed fundamental modes satisfy the selection rules valid for the scheelite structure. The pressure dependence of the Raman spectra of KIO4, which was investigated up to 12 Gpa, reveals a structural phase transition in the crystal near 6.5 GPa, where new peaks are observed. Above 9.8 GPa only the peaks belonging to the high-pressure phase exist.
