    Notes: SYNOPSIS. California ground squirrels (Citellus beecheyi) were found to be infected with trypa-nosomes whose most striking morphological features are an unusually large kinetoplast and a long, tapering posterior end. The total length is 25.2 μ, and body length is 18.0 μ. This “lewisi”-type species is compared with other trypanosomes reported from American ground squirrels, but a specific diagnosis is not made because the life cycle has not been observed and because morphological features of trypanosomes are known to vary widely under differing environmental conditions.

    Notes: . Plankton and fishes are abundant in Antarctic waters. Benthic invertebrates and fishes of the continental shelf are well-known, but the abyssal benthos below the highly productive open ocean is largely unsampled. The fishes are adapted (with antifreeze properties) to temperatures that are often or always below the freezing points of their body fluids. All the major groups of helminth parasites are found in or on these fishes. The few records of protozoa include Cryptobia, haemogregarines, a monoflagellate, the myxosporan Neoparvicapsula, and (in this paper) Ceratomyxa. Myxidium, Zschokkella, and a coccidian. Most of the protozoa were obtained from nototheniid fishes. No protozoa and few, if any, other parasites were recovered from 173 midwater fishes collected from outside of the continental shelf. Differences in infections in different localities and depths are due to many ecologic factors needing much more study of their relations to parasitism. These factors include temperatures, salinities, densities of fish populations, food and feeding habits, migrations of adult and immature fishes, availability of potential intermediate hosts, and marine “snow.”

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Five species of Leptotheca, one new, were found in the macrourid fishes and the sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria. Those species which were geographically widespread in numerous host species showed little variation. Two Leptotheca species were found both in the gall bladder and urinary bladder/kidney.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Monocercomonas molae from the hindgut of the sunfish Mola mola is described. The host was taken from southern California coastal waters in October, 1964. The body of the flagellate is 8.0 × 10.7 microns. A single basal granule complex gives rise to 4 flagella, one of which is recurrent. The axostyle is relatively stout, with argentophilic granules, and possesses a periaxostylar ring. The capitulum of the axostyle continues into the sickle-shaped pelta, and the parabasal body is rod-shaped or lobed and roughly triangular in cross-section.

    Notes: Our knowledge of parasitic protozoa can be greatly enhanced by increased use of the following 3 ecological approaches to the study of parasitism. A) Studies of energy flow between parasite and host. B) Systems analysis. C) Studies of nutrition through an analysis of the parasite's environment. Most of the energy in cysts and spores is never returned to the parasite-host system. The more integrated the system the more difficult an analysis of the role of parasites in the host energy budget. A parasite-host system can be understood only through a careful study of each part, and the relationships among these parts. A measure of the nutrient status of a body fluid should take into consideration the nutrient status of any population of parasites that may be residing in that fluid. The above considerations were applied to problems of parasitism in deepsea fishes. Small, delicate midwater fishes do not have much energy for pursuing prey. We need to know details of the effects of great pressures and low temperatures on parasites. Energy flow between parasites and deep marine fishes has never been investigated. It is possible that parasites in these fishes are more efficient in energy transformation than are their hosts. These kinds of studies may be labeled “integrative parasitology.”

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Entamoeba molae n. sp. was found in the hindgut of Mola mola collected from the coast of southern California. The trophic stages are actively motile and contain numerous food vacuoles. The nuclear peripheral chromatin is usually conspicuous. A subperipheral crescent of granules is the most distinctive feature of the nucleus. The endosome is eccentric and often surrounded by a periendosomal ring. Measurements: cell body 16.4 × 22.9 μ nucleus 4.8 μ in diameter. Cysts were not seen. We believe that few amebas have been described from fishes because few fishes have been examined for amebas.
