    Description: We collected and completely sequenced 28,469 full-length complementary DNA clones from Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica cv. Nipponbare. Through homology searches of publicly available sequence data, we assigned tentative protein functions to 21,596 clones (75.86%). Mapping of the cDNA clones to genomic DNA revealed that there are 19,000 to 20,500 transcription units in the rice genome. Protein informatics analysis against the InterPro database revealed the existence of proteins presented in rice but not in Arabidopsis.     Description: Spectroscopic and photometric evidence indicates that Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are the thermonuclear explosions of accreting white dwarfs. However, the progenitor binary systems and hydrodynamical models for SNe Ia are still controversial. The relatively uniform light curves and spectral evolution of SNe Ia have led to their use as a standard candle for determining cosmological parameters, such as the Hubble constant, the density parameter, and the cosmological constant.     Notes: Photoconductivity (PC) of crystalline Si induced by ∼1 eV photon irradiation has been studied under simultaneous 17 MeV proton irradiation. The PC during simultaneous irradiation is suppressed to 20%–50% of the value without the proton irradiation. The PC-suppression rate depends on the photon energy, the proton flux, and the defect concentration. These dependences are explained with a saturated variation of conductivity increment Δσ during the proton irradiation. The saturation is mainly ascribed to bimolecular-type recombination of excess carriers under high-density excitation. The understanding of the PC-suppression process contributes to the development of photodetectors for use in strong radiation fields. Guidelines to limit the effect of the PC suppression are also discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Surface morphology and structural changes of amorphous (a-), crystalline (c-) SiO2 and MgAl2O4 spinel, implanted with high-current Cu− of 60 keV, were studied using atomic force microscopy. Kinetic variation of the surface morphology was evaluated by changing dose rate from 1 to 100 μA/cm2. In the cases of a-SiO2 and c-SiO2, the surface morphology significantly varied with dose rate: dome-type textures in the lower dose-rate region caused radiation-induced roughening, while net-type ones in the higher region occurred with radiation-induced smoothing. Step-height measurements showed radiation-induced expansion and compaction for c-SiO2 and a-SiO2, respectively. Radiation-induced amorphization is responsible for the expansion processes of c-SiO2. Contrarily, no amorphization was observed in the spinel up to dose rates of about 100 μA/cm2, although radiation-induced swelling, due to defect accumulation, was discernible by the step-height measurement. The surface morphology and the roughness of the spinel were not very dependent on dose rate. The results of c-SiO2 and a-SiO2 indicate that both of them are subjected to enhanced changes in surface morphology and microstructures and that high-current implantation causes highly dynamic states in the near-surface region. On the other hand, the results for the spinel show pronounced stability and that the spinel may be used as an effective substrate for optical modification, even for high-current ion implantation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: As most soil phosphates exist as insoluble inorganic phosphate and organic phosphates, higher plants have developed several strategies for adaptation to low phosphorus (P). These include the secretion of acid phosphatase and organic acids, induction of the inorganic phosphate (Pi) transporter and the substitution of some enzyme activities as alternative pathways to increase P utilization efficiency. It has been proposed that plants also have a ‘pho regulon’ system, as observed in yeast and Escherichia coli; however, the detail of the regulation system for gene expression on P status is still unclear in plants. To investigate the alteration of gene expression of rice roots grown under P-deficient conditions, a transcriptomic analysis was conducted using a cDNA microarray on rice. Based on the changes of gene expression under a –P treatment, the up-regulation of some genes due to P deficiency was confirmed . Some new important metabolic changes are suggested, namely: (1) acceleration of carbon supply for organic acid synthesis through glycolysis; (2) alteration of lipid metabolism; (3) rearrangement of compounds for cell wall; and (4) changes of gene expression related to the response for metallic elements such as Al, Fe and Zn.
