    Notes: Abstract A self-adaptive mesh refinement technique is developed for boundary element solutions of the two-dimensional Laplace equation. The method is based on error reduction and applied on the element and global level to estimate the error associated with each mesh. This adaptive technique is then utilized to analyze problems with and without singularities. Results employing constant two-dimensional boundary elements are presented.

    Notes: Several recent calculations of the stress field around crazes in glassy polymers have been based on experimentally obtained craze opening displacements. Although various techniques for performing these calculations have been presented (i.e., Fourier transform, boundary integral, and finite element methods), all are based on the solution of the same ill-conditioned boundary value problem. Specific boundary conditions required to calculate the stresses around a craze lead to a large change in the stress field with small changes in the craze profile which are within the reported experimental tolerance.

    Notes: Composites composed of closed solid wall cells enclosing a fluid are examined in this paper. The analysis of their stiffness in compression includes the effects of fluids in the cell interiors. A specialized finite element program is developed to account for the internal pressure. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional geometries are considered. The finite element calculations are then used to predict the compressive stiffness of fluid filled metal cell composites.

    Description: Application of broiler ( Gallus gallus ) litter (BL) to pasturelands in karst regions like the Ozark Highlands can potentially reduce water quality due to leaching of BL-derived nutrients and trace metals. The objective of this study was to determine long-term linear trends in drainage and soil leachate water quality under natural precipitation from a silt-loam soil amended annually with BL at three application rates (0 [control], 5.6 [low], and 11.2 [high] Mg BL ha –1 ]. Automated equilibrium tension lysimeters were used to continuously monitor and collect leachate from an undisturbed soil profile with a history of litter applications under forage management at a depth of 0.9 m for the 8-yr period from May 2003 through April 2011. Average annual flow-weighted mean (FWM) concentrations and loads of NH 4 –N, As, Mn, and Ni decreased linearly ( P 〈 0.05), while Cu and Se increased ( P 〈 0.05) linearly during the 8 yr. Nearly all water quality parameters measured were unaffected ( P 〉 0.05) by BL rate alone. Continued annual additions of BL linearly increased ( P 〈 0.05) the average annual FWM leachate Na concentrations relative to the unamended control. Results indicated that pasturelands with a history of BL application may continue to release BL-derived metals, such as As and Se, at concentrations harmful to health regardless of current management practice long after litter application has ceased. Land application of nutrient- and trace-metal-containing animal wastes in regions with underlying karst features needs to be carefully managed to minimize subsoil leaching losses.

    Description: This paper compares a finite element solution of a modified Reynolds equation with a finite difference solution of the Navier-Stokes equation for a power law fluid. Both the finite element and finite difference formulation are reviewed. Solutions to spiral flow in parallel and conical geometries are compared. Comparison with experimental results are also given. The effects of the assumptions used in the Reynolds equation are discussed.

    Description: An attempt is made to relate elements of two-phase flow and kinetic theory to the modified generalized Reynolds equation and to the energy equation, in order to arrive at a unified model simulating the pressure and flows in journal bearings, hydrostatic journal bearings, or squeeze film dampers when a two-phase situation occurs due to sudden fluid depressurization and heat generation. The numerical examples presented furnish a test of the algorithm for constant properties, and give insight into the effect of the shaft fluid heat transfer coefficient on the temperature profiles. The different level of pressures achievable for a given angular velocity depends on whether the bearing is thermal or nonisothermal; upwind differencing is noted to be essential for the derivation of a realistic profile.

    Description: High-pressure, high-temperature seal flow (leakage) data for nonrotating and rotating Raleigh-step and convergent-tapered-bore seals were characterized in terms of a normalized flow coefficient. The data for normalized Rayleigh-step and nonrotating tapered-bore seals were in reasonable agreement with theory, but data for the rotating tapered-bore seals were not. The tapered-bore-seal operational clearances estimated from the flow data were significantly larger than calculated. Although clearances are influenced by wear from conical to cylindrical geometry and errors in clearance corrections, the problem was isolated to the shaft temperature - rotational speed clearance correction. The geometric changes support the use of some conical convergence in any seal. Under these conditions rotation reduced the normalized flow coefficiently by nearly 10 percent.

    Description: In systems where the design inlet and outlet pressure P sub amb are maintained above the thermodynamic critical pressure P sub c, it is often assumed that heat and mass transfer are governed by single-phase relations and that two-phase flows cannot occur. This simple rule of thumb is adequate in many low-power designs but is inadequate for high-performance turbomachines, boilers, and other systems where two-phase regions can exist even though P sub amb P sub c. Heat and mass transfer and rotordynamic-fluid-mechanic restoring forces depend on momentum differences, and those for a two-phase zone can differ significantly from those for a single-phase zone. By using a laminar, variable-property bearing code and a rotating boiler code, pressure and temperature surfaces were determined that illustrate nesting of a two-phase region within a supercritical pressure region. The method of corresponding states is applied to bearings with reasonable rapport.
