Description: The nanoscale patterns created on the ZnO(0001) surfaces during atom beam irradiation have been investigated here for their photo absorption response. Preferential sputtering, during irradiation, promotes Zn-rich zones that serve as the nucleation centers for the spontaneous creation of nanostructures. Nanostructured surfaces with bigger (78 nm) nanodots, displaying hexagonal ordering and long ranged periodic behavior, show higher photo absorption and a ∼0.09 eV reduced bandgap. These nanostructures also demonstrate higher concentration of oxygen vacancies which are crucial for these results. The enhanced photo-response, as observed here, has been achieved in the absence of any dopant elements.

Notes: The conventional methods of magnetic interpretation consider in general the induced magnetization only. However, in a computer oriented inverse method, the direction of magnetization can be taken as arbitrary. Following this procedure, this study aims to present a realistic interpretation of an aeromagnetic anomaly from Chitaldrug Schist belt (Mysore, India) assuming a three-dimensional configuration of the causative source possessing remanent magnetization. It further provides the direction of remanent magnetization of the source rock as obtained from the analysis of the magnetic anomaly. The total intensity map obtained delineates the surface and sub-surface structures in the region and provides informations regarding the characteristics of primordial crust.

Notes: A study of probability distribution function and spectrum of the Airborne Total Intensity Map for an area of 3000 Squ. miles covered by the Bundelkhand granite in India has revealed a close correlation between the Gaussian or non-Gaussian nature of distribution and the shape of unite value contour on the spectrum plot. Further studies of radial spectrum plots suggest that the surface magnetic sources are mainly responsible for the non-Gaussian character of the distribution function and as well as for irregular spectrum shape. The histogram of depth values for magnetic sources obtained from radial spectrum plots show three horizons, namely (i) surface (ii) 410 m(1400′) and (iii) 1000 m (3400′).Based on these informations blocks with ferromagnetic composition at the surface can be identified from those which are non magnetic at the surface.

Notes: The Fourier transform of a square-shaped section of a magnetic survey, digitized in a square grid, forms a rectangular matrix of coefficients which can be condensed to a series of average amplitudes dependent only on their frequency and no longer on the direction of the respective partial waves. These average amplitudes together represent a spectrum which–when plotted in a semilogarithmic coordinate system (log amplitude versus frequency)–often shows straight segments which decrease with increasing frequency. By continuing the given field downwards these straight segments become horizontal at a certain depth, the so-called “white depth”. This white depth may be used as a first estimate for the depth of magnetic sources producing the respective part of the field. It is shown that the sources which correspond to such use of the white depth can be expected to be “randomly distributed with some positive autocorrelation”.As an example for such a depth estimation the interpretation of the aeromagnetic survey of NW-Germany by a relief in 8–16 km depth is given. The relief divides the subsurface in an upper nonmagnetic layer and a lower layer with magnetization M= 2 Am−1.

Notes: Excised rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Ratna) leaves were used to compare the changes in the levels of various biochemical intermediates and enzyme activities during senescence in turgid and water-stressed conditions. Chlorophyll, total protein and soluble protein content decreased but α-amino nitrogen content increased during the senescence of turgid leaves. In the leaves subjected to water stress, these changes were accelerated, the acceleration being greater with higher degree of water stress. Starch, soluble sugars, total carbohydrates and non-reducing sugar content decreased during senescence of turgid leaves. Water stress accelerated the changes in the levels of starch and non-reducing sugar, but the changes in the levels of soluble sugars and total carbohydrates were retarded. Reducing sugar content increased at first and then decreased in the turgid leaves, and water stress accelerated the change. The decline in the catalase activity and the increase in the peroxidase activity with time was faster in the water-stressed leaves than in the turgid leaves. Acid inorganic pyrophosphatase activity increased, but alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase activity decreased during the senescence of turgid leaves, and such changes were accelerated by water stress. The results suggest that water stress does not accelerate all the processes connected with leaf senescence.

Notes: Excised rice leaves (Oryza sativa L. cv. Ratna) werefloated on a 10–3M solution of benzirnidazole under dark or continuous red light. Compared to the water control a degradation of chlorophyll, protein, RNA, DNA and a decrease in the activity of alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase was delayed at the same time as an increase of α-amino nitrogen and the activity of acid inorganic pyrophosphatase occurred, Benzimidazole was more effective under red light than in the dark in retarding senescence. The possible role of inorganic pyrophosphatases is discussed with respect to biosynthesis during leaf senescence.

Notes: Acid inorganic pyrophosphatase on the one hand, and Mg2+-dependent alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase and Zn2+-dependent acid inorganic pyrophosphatase on the other hand showed opposite trends in their activities in rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Ratna) seedlings grown in dark and sun. The opposite trends in their activities were also noted in rice seedlings grown from gamma-irradiated seeds and in detached rice leaves floated on water in dark. The ratios of Mg2+ dependent alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase/acid inorganic pyrophosphatase and Zn2+-dependent acid inorganic pyrophosphatase/acid inorganic pyrophosphatase changed significantly in response to the above physical treatments, but the ratio of Mg2+ dependent alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase/Zn2+ dependent acid inorganic pyrophosphatase remained relatively stable. The conclusion is that Zn2+-dependent acid inorganic pyrophosphatase activity is the same as that of Mg2+-dependent alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase and is different from that of acid inorganic pyrophosphatase, which requires no metal ion for activity. The acid and alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase activities are due to separate enzyme proteins.

Notes: Summary The activity of acid phosphatases (glycerophosphatase, phenylphosphatase and pyrophosphatase) in Cowpea (Vigna catjang) leaves has been studied at different hours of the day and a marked diurnal variation has been observed. The phosphatase activity in leaves collected between 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. was always higher than in leaves collected earlier in the morning and late at evening. Pyrophosphatase activity exhibited greater variation than phenylphosphatase and glycerophosphatase activity. The significance of the increased phosphatase activity is discussed in relation to the production of carbohydrates from organic acids in light.
