    Description: Carbon doping is known to be very effective for enhancing the high-field properties of magnesium diboride, MgB 2 , but not for the low-field properties. Here, we report that both the high- and the low-field properties can be improved simultaneously without doping by increasing the initial magnesium partial pressure, by simply reducing the size of the magnesium particles. It is shown that in situ processed bulk MgB 2 sintered with fine magnesium powders has superior superconducting properties compared with a bulk sample fabricated using coarse magnesium lumps. The change in the lattice parameters was almost negligible; however, a clear increase in lattice strain can be observed for the sample sintered with fine magnesium powders. The increase in the lattice strain results in an enhancement of the high-field properties. Furthermore, it has also been found that the low-field critical current density is not reduced, but rather slightly increased for the fine magnesium powder sample. This is due to a closer linkage among the grains that drastically improves grain connectivity. These findings demonstrate that the initial growth mechanism of MgB 2 is very crucial for its superior superconducting properties, and it especially indicates the importance of magnesium vapor pressure.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of water vapour on oxidation of pressureless-sintered silicon carbide containing alumina as a densifying aid were studied in a wet air flow with 10, 20, 30 and 40vol% H2O at 1300° C for 100h. The oxidation kinetics were determined in a wet air flow with 20 vol % H2O and in a dry air flow at 1300° C for times up to 360 h. The weight gain on oxidation showed an increasing tendency with increasing water vapour content. Water vapour in the atmosphere strongly influenced oxidation and accelerated the reaction. Oxidation in a wet atmosphere proceeded in a diffusion-controlled manner, in the same process as that for the dry atmosphere. No remarkable differences were noticed in the microstructure of the oxide layer and the surface roughness between the samples oxidized under the four wet conditions, but the surface roughness increased with increasing oxidation time. Water vapour evidently accelerated the devitrification of amorphous silica and promoted oxidation. Oxidation in a wet atmosphere (10 to 40 vol % H2O for 100 h and 20 vol % H2O up to 360 h) had a slight degrading effect on the flexural strength. The microstructure or surface roughness of the oxide layer formed during oxidation presumably had very little effect on the room-temperature strength.

    Notes: Abstract A primary cell culture system was developed for the cells of lymphoid organ tissue of kuruma shrimp, Penaeus japonicus. Minced tissues of lymphoid organs were seeded and incubated at 30 °C in medium 199 supplemented with 20% foetal bovine serum, a salt mixture and a lactalbumin hydrolysate (0.1 g/l). Fibroblast-like cells and epithelioid-like cells survived for 54 days. Cells did not survive after trypsin, collagenase or hyaluronidase treatment used for cell dissociation. Mitogens (Con A, PHA-P, Pokeweed) and insulin did not enhance cell proliferation. When penaeid rod-shaped DNA virus (PRDV) was inoculated into the lymphoid organ cell culture, a cytopathic effect was observed within 8 days. On the other hand, large granular haemocytes that were fractionated using a Percoll continuous density gradient were not infected with PRDV in vitro within 10 days, which was the longest period of haemocyte maintenance.

The oxidation kinetics were determined in a wet air flow with 20 vol% H2O and in a dry air flow at 1300°C for oxidation times up to 360 h. The water vapour in the atmosphere slightly influenced the oxidation and accelerated the reaction, and the weight gained on oxidation in a wet atmosphere had an increasing tendency with increasing water vapour content. The oxidation proceeded in a diffusion-controlled manner in both wet and dry atmospheres. The values of weight gained in wet oxidation varied to a greater degree than in dry oxidation. Water vapour had a strong effect on the devitrification of the amorphous oxide. This process was presumed to promote the rate of oxidation more than in dry atmosphere. The water vapour also had a strong roughening effect on the surface oxide layer grown during oxidation. The flexural strength at room temperature was degraded by oxidation in a wet atmosphere and it is presumed to be degraded by wet oxidation slightly and consecutively with time.

    Notes: Abstract Five silicon nitride ceramics with various additives were evaluated for their oxidation resistance at 1300 ° C in flowing dry and wet air. In a dry atmosphere, the oxidation of all types of Si3N4 except one proceeded in two stages with different reaction rates nearly following the parabolic law. In a wet atmosphere, all types showed a linear relationship between weight gain by oxidation and water varpour content. The water vapour in the atmosphere slightly accelerated the oxidation. The influence of oxidation on room-temperature strength was complex, but there was no observed distinguishable difference of the effect on the flexural strength between dry and wet oxidation.

    Notes: Abstract. Marine sediments from a Japanese bay were examined for the occurrence of Bacillus thuringiensis. Of 1313 colonies belonging to the Bacillus cereus/B. thuringiensis group, 22 (1.7%) were allocated to B. thuringiensis. Marine isolates of B. thuringiensis consisted of heterogeneous multiple H serogroups; 10 isolates were assigned to the eight serovars (kurstaki, sumiyoshiensis, sotto, aizawai, darmstadiensis, thompsoni, neoleonensis, and higo); two motile isolates failed to react with the reference antisera; and the others were serologically untestable. Insecticidal activities were associated with two kurstaki isolates (toxic to both Lepidoptera and Diptera) and a higo isolate (Diptera-specific). None of the parasporal inclusion proteins of the 22 isolates exhibited in vitro cytotoxic activity against two vertebrate cells, sheep erythrocytes and HeLa cells. All B. thuringiensis isolates had no halophilism, although seawater-based medium supported their growth, sporulation, and formation of parasporal inclusions.
