    Notes: An experimental study of the development of phase morphology in incompatible polymer melt blends of polyethylene/polystyrene (PE/PS), polyethylene/polycarbonate (PE/PC), and polyethylene/nylon-6 (PE/N6) is presented. Different temperatures (180°C, 240°C) of mixing and polyethylene molecular- weight levels were used in the PE/PS studies. Little variation in the cross-sectional phase morphology of the PE/PS extrudates was observed with these variables, though the morphology became finer with increased shear rate/stress in capillary die flow. Variations in the longitudinal morphology are observed with continuous filaments of dispersed phase only arising when the dispersed phase has an equal or lower viscosity than the continuous phase. The PE/N6 and PE/PC, especially the former, give coarser morphologies when the N6 and PC are the continuous phases. This was attributed to larger inter-facial tensions. The effect of viscoelasticity was also discussed.

    Notes: The phase morphology and polymer chain orientation in polyethylene-polycarbonte blends is investigated. A blend with a dispersed polyethylene phase was found to exhibit phase growth under quiescent conditions. Addition of a styrene-(ethylene/butene) block copolymer controls the phase morphology and prevents phase growth. Melt spun tapes and tubular film have been prepared from polyethylene-polycarbonate blends. Orientation of the crystallo-graphic axes of the polyethylene and the chain axis of the polycarbonate were determined by infrared dichroism. The addition of polycarbonate to polyethylene is found to decrease chain orientation at the same drawdown stress.

    Notes: Investigations of instability of phase morphology of blends of nylons with polyethylenes and polystyrenes and the effects of “compatibilizing” additives or “agents” are described. Annealing coarsens the phase morphology of blends of nylons with polyethylenes and polystyrenes. Phase growth is observed for various periods of annealing time. The addition of compatibilizing agents, specifically maleic anhydride grafted polyolefins to polyethylene-nylon blends and syrene-maleic anhydride copolymers to polystyrene-nylon blends, stabilize the phase dimensions. Styene-maleic anhydride copolymer is found more effective than styrene acrylonitrile copolymer as a compatibilizing agent. The mechanisms of this behavior are critically discussed.

    Notes: The flow analysis network (FAN) method was modified to analyze the flow of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in a model counter-rotating nonintermeshing screw extruder. The numerical prediction of the pressure profiles was compared with the experimental results. Flow patterns in the screw elements of the model counter-rotating nonintermeshing twin screw extruder were also predicted. A new flow path method was developed to calculate the residence time distribution. This result will be applied to analyze the flow during the reaction in the model twin screw extruder.

    Notes: A fundamental study of electrical conductivity of uniaxially and biaxially stretched poly-p-phenylene sulfide (PPS) film was conducted. In this paper, we paid special attention to understand the effect of processing conditions on the electrical conductivity as well as the conduction mechanism of tantalum pentafluoride (TaF5) doped PPS. The electrical conductivity of PPS film was measured by a four-point probe method in the parallel and perpendicular directions to the stretching direction. The infrared spectra of doped and undoped stretched PPS films demonstrate that the TaF5 doping causes distortion (polaron) in PPS chain and conduction. A similar discussion was reported by Tsukamoto, et al. (1, 2). They found the delocalization of π-electrons in doped PPS by X-ray spectoscopy (XPS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and C13-NMR. The conductivity of doped PPS films increased with increasing stretching ratio. The crystallinity effect on the electrical conductivity was investigated by changing crystallinity of PPS films in terms of annealing and multi-axially stretching. Orientation development was investigated by wide angle X-ray scattering and birefringence techniques. The relationship between conductivity and orientation of stretched PPS films was investigated by introducing electrical anisotropy.

    Notes: The flow-induced phase morphological development under different extrusion conditions was studied in terms of the rheological property and interfacial tension of various elastomers and thermoplstics. The interfacial tension for elastomers and thermoplastics was investigated by using a breaking thread method (1-4). We found that the method is suitable for measuring interfacial tension without degradation. The droplet-fibrillation transition phenomenon was observed in various extrudates of fluoroelastomer/polycarbonate blends. The criteria for the flow-induced morphology, in particular the droplet-fibrillation transition, are critically discussed in this paper.

    Notes: A simulation technique for nonisothermal flow analysis of non-Newtonian fluid in a nonintermeshing counter-rotating twin screw extruder was developed by modifying the flow analysis network (FAN) method. The local shear viscosity in the flow field was calculated by an iteration method combing the three types of mean shear rate functions. The modified Cross model and an Arrhenius-type function for temperature dependence were also introduced. Streamlines in the flow field are represented by computing the movements of fluid particles based on the flux fields. The computed residence time from the streamlines led us to solve the energy equation by replacing the coordinate system. The profiles of pressure, shear rate, shear viscosity, temperature, and residence time were simulated. The influence of operating and geometrical parameters on the screw characteristics are discussed. Further, residence time distribution (RTD), strain distribution function (SDF), and interfacial area growth are predicted from the computation of streamlines to analyze the mixing capabilities of the extruder.

    Notes: An experimental study of the development of phase morphology, rheological properties, and processing behavior of mechanical blends of a polystyrene (PS) and a high density polyethylene (PE) is presented. Phase morphologies were determined by scanning electron microscopy for (i) products prepared in a screw extruder/static mixer system, (ii) samples removed from a cone-plate viscometer, (iii) extrudates, and (iv) melt spun fibers. Disperse phase dimensions were measured. The values varied from 1-5 μm in the products from static mixers. The dimensions of the dispersed phase in the blend products from the cone plate and capillary die were of the same order. The melt-spun fibers exhibited disperse phase dimensions as low as 0.35 μm. Polystyrene was extracted from the blend fibers producing small diameter, PE fibrils, or minifibers. Both the initial melts and the blends were rheologically characterized. The shear viscosity and principal normal stress difference N1 exhibit maxima and minima when plotted as a function of composition. The characteristics of extrudates and melt spinning behavior of the blends were investigated. The shrinkage of extrudates of PE is much greater than PS. Additional small amounts of PE to PS greatly increase its shrinkage. Addition of PE to PS initially increases extrudate swell, though the swell shows maxima and minima when considered as a function of composition. The positions of the maxima and minima correspond to those of N1. The onset of draw resonance has been investigated in isothermal melt spinning. Wide angle X-ray diffraction studies have been carried out on blend fibers and the orientation of the crystalline polyethylene regions has been determined as a function of process conditions. This orientation decreases rapidly with the addition of polystyrene when the melt-spun filaments are compared at the same spinline stress or drawdown ratio.

The numerical prediction of the velocity, temperature, viscosity, and pressure profiles during reaction in the model twin screw extruder is described.

    Notes: The synthesis of a block copolymer with polystyrene (PS) and polycarbonate (PC) segments is described. It is produced by anionic polymerization of the styrene and endcapping with a hydroxyl group followed by subsequent reaction with phosgene and bisphenol-A. The polystyrene/polycarbonate block copolymer was used as a compatibilizing agent for blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(p- phenylene oxide) (PPO). The block copolymer reduced the dimensions of the dispersed phase. The uniaxial mechanical properties of the compatibilized blends were improved by 5 to 10 wt% loadings of the copolymer.
