Beschreibung: Light-sheet-based fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) features optical sectioning in the excitation process. It minimizes fluorophore bleaching as well as phototoxic effects and provides a true axial resolution. The detection path resembles properties of conventional fluorescence microscopy. Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) is attractive for superresolution because of its moderate excitation intensity, high acquisition speed, and compatibility with all fluorophores. We introduce SIM to LSFM because the combination pushes the lateral resolution to the physical limit of linear SIM. The instrument requires three objective lenses and relies on methods to control two counterpropagating coherent light sheets that generate excitation patterns in the focal plane of the detection lens. SIM patterns with the finest line spacing in the far field become available along multiple orientations. Flexible control of rotation, frequency, and phase shift of the perfectly modulated light sheet are demonstrated. Images of beads prove a near-isotropic lateral resolution of sub-100 nm. Images of yeast endoplasmic reticulum show that coherent structured illumination (csi) LSFM performs with physiologically relevant specimens.

Beschreibung: Water, Vol. 9, Pages 996: A Comparison of Preference Handling Techniques in Multi-Objective Optimisation for Water Distribution Systems Water doi: 10.3390/w9120996 Authors: Gilberto Reynoso-Meza Victor Alves Ribeiro Elizabeth Carreño-Alvarado Dealing with real world engineering problems, often comes with facing multiple and conflicting objectives and requirements. Water distributions systems (WDS) are not exempt from this: while cost and hydraulic performance are usually conflicting objectives, several requirements related with environmental issues in water sources might be in conflict as well. Commonly, optimisation statements are defined in order to address the WDS design, management and/or control. Multi-objective optimisation can handle such conflicting objectives, by means of a simultaneous optimisation of the design objectives, in order to approximate the so-called Pareto front. In such algorithms it is possible to embed preference handling mechanisms, with the aim of improving the pertinency of the approximation. In this paper we propose two mechanisms to handle such preferences based on the TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) and PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organisation METHod for Enrichment of Evaluations) methods. Performance evaluation on two benchmarks validates the usefulness of such approaches according to the degree of flexibility to capture designers’ preferences.

Beschreibung: The FC-1D was designed as an advanced solution for a low cost commercial transport meeting or exceeding all of the 1993/1994 AIAA/Lockheed request for proposal requirements. The driving philosophy behind the design of the FC-1D was the reduction of airline direct operating costs. Every effort was made during the design process to have the customer in mind. The Flying Circus Commercial Aviation Group targeted reductions in drag, fuel consumption, manufacturing costs, and maintenance costs. Flying Circus emphasized cost reduction throughout the entire design program. Drag reduction was achieved by implementation of the aft nacelle wing configuration to reduce cruise drag and increase cruise speeds. To reduce induced drag, rather than increasing the wing span of the FC-1D, spiroids were included in the efficient wing design. Profile and friction drag are reduced by using riblets in place of paint around the fuselage and empennage of the FC-1D. Choosing a single aisle configuration enabled the Flying Circus to optimize the fuselage diameter. Thus, reducing fuselage drag while gaining high structural efficiency. To further reduce fuel consumption a weight reduction program was conducted through the use of composite materials. An additional quality of the FC-1D is its design for low cost manufacturing and assembly. As a result of this design attribute, the FC-1D will have fewer parts which reduces weight as well as maintenance and assembly costs. The FC-1D is affordable and effective, the apex of commercial transport design.

Beschreibung: A rotorcraft analysis is conducted to assess tilt-rotor stability and conversion loads for the XV-15 rotor with metal blades within its specified test envelope. A 38-DOF flutter analysis based on the code by Johnson (1988) is developed to simulate a wind-tunnel test in which the rotor torque is constant and thereby study stability. The same analytical model provides the simulated loads including hub loads, blade loads, and oscillatory pitch-link loads with attention given to the nonuniform inflow through the proprotor in the presence of the wing. Tilt-rotor stability during the cruise mode is found to be sensitive to coupling effects in the control system stiffness, and a stability problem is identified in the XV-15 Advanced Technology Blades. The present analysis demonstrates that the tilt-rotor is stable within the specified test envelope of the NASA 40 x 80-ft wind tunnel.
