Notes: With a view to encouraging magnetic observatory staff to make fuller use of their own data, a simple but rigorous method is presented for the determination of coherent, periodic variations from long series of observatory data. The method is readily adaptable to the different types of data published by observatories, is able to cope with gaps in data, is tuneable to any desired frequency and can run on a modest PC. As an illustration of the method, it has been applied to data from the Kandilli Observatory.

Notes: The annual variation of the geomagnetic field is a phenomenon resulting from the movement of the mean latitude of the ring current between summer and winter and is of importance for the determination of deep-mantle conductivity. However, if the annual term is determined from data based on all-day means, it is found to include terms arising from the seasonal variation and modulation of Sq. This effect is investigated both theoretically and experimentally, and it is concluded that the annual variation is best determined from night-time data.

Notes: [Auszug] ON June 1st, 1831, Commander James Clark Ross "fixed the British flag on the spot, and took possession of the North Magnetic Pole and its adjoining territory, in the name of Great Britain and King William the Fourth"1. The spot referred to was at 70 5?7" N,96 46'45"W where the mean value of ...

Notes: [Auszug] WE recently showed a significant correlation between the daily sums of Kp, the planetary index of geomagnetic activity, and the daily admissions of cardiac emergency cases to the two main hospitals in Hyderabad and Secunderabad1. Richard Peto of the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford, has re-examined our ...

Notes: [Auszug] Jupiter is the largest known planet. It has a mean radius rs of 6.97 x 107 m, more than 10 times that of the Earth, and a mean density of 1,330 kgm"3, close to that of the Sun and about a quarter of that of the Earth. At about 5 x IO12 Pa (50 Mbar), Jupiter's central pressure is more than 10 times ...

Notes: [Auszug] ON 26 May 1832, the horizontal component of the Earth's magnetic field at Gottingen was 1.7820 mg^mnv^s-1 (=17,820 nT). Not particularly remarkable, you might think, except that this was the first ever absolute measurement of the geomagnetic field and its attainment had required much of the armoury ...

Notes: [Auszug] The medical data consist of the number of cardiac emergencies admitted each day to the cardiac/thoracic wards of the main hospitals in Hyderabad and Secunderabad, the Osmania General Hospital and the Gandhi Hospital, respectively, during 1967-1972. Almost all the acute heart cases in those cities ...

Notes: [Auszug] To a first approximation (and an extremely good one) the Earth's magnetic field can be represented by that of a uniformly magnetised sphere-the so-called 'centred dipole' model. The orientation of the dipole axis (78.7N, 289.5E) and its motion (0.00 yr-1 N,-0.06 yr"1 E) follow closely the trends ...
