Notes: Weeds are a major constraint to increasing production of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) in Sudan, Field studies were conducted to determine the yield loss due to weeds, to identify the critical period of weed interference, to evaluate the activity of different herbicide mixtures in controlting weeds and their selectivity for lentil, and to evaluate different methods of weed control for developing an integrated weed management practice. At Rubatab. unrestricted weed growth accounted for up to 84% loss in yield. The critical period of weed control was between 2 and 4 weeks after sowing. However, a weeding regime experiment at Dongola, a cooler location with a longer growing season, indicated that the critical period was between 4 and 6 weeks after sowing. suggesting that the critical period might vary with the environmental conditions. The herbicides imazethapyr (0.05 kg a.i. ha-1), terbutryn (1.0 kg a.i. ha-1) and prometryn (1.0 kg a.i. ha-1), each in a tank mixture with pendimethalin (1.2 kg a.i. ha-1), were tolerated by lentil, controlled weeds effectively and significantly increased yields at Wad Hamid. Their efficacy in controlling weeds at Rubatab was low, however, because of the presence of Tephrosia apollinea (Del.) DC. and Melilotus indica (L.) All., which tolerated these herbicides. Efficacy was also reduced in heavier soils. One supplementary hand-weeding at 4 weeks after sowing enhanced the performance of these herbicides under such conditions. A tank mixture of oxyfluorfen (0.24 kg a.i. ha-1) with either terbutryn (1.0 kg a.i. ha-1) or prometryn (1.0 kg a.i. ha-1) also provided good weed control and increased yield of lentil at Wad Hamid. Application of a higher dose (1.5 kg a.i. ha-1) of terbutryn and prometryn caused phytotoxicity. Irrigation before seed-bed preparation reduced grass and broad-leaved weeds by 58% and 40% respectively, and gave a 30% increase in grain yield over no irrigation. Pre-emergence application of oxyfluorfen (0.24 kg a.i. ha-1) and a supplementary hand-weeding at 4 weeks after sowing gave excellent control of weeds and increased lentil yield by 57% over the weedy control. Thus, use of presowing irrigation, pre-emergence herbicide and one hand-weeding form an effective integrated package for controiling weeds in northern Sudan.

Notes: Abstract Experiments were conducted to investigate the distribution of strain within the gauge length for specimens of the superplastic Pb-62 wt % Sn eutectic alloy tested at room temperature. It is shown that deformation is quasi-uniform at low strain rates in region II so that the necks are diffuse rather than localized, but failure occurs by the formation of a sharp neck at high strain rates in region III. Using a specimen grain size of 6.1 μm, the transition from region II to region III occurs at an initial strain rate in the vicinity of

Notes: Abstract A survey on mites associated with stored seeds, flour and foodstuffs in Fayoum Governorate, Upper Egypt, proved the occurrence of about 24 species. Of these, 15 species in 8 families belong to Prostigmata, 6 species in 3 families belong to Astigmata and 3 species in 2 families belong to Mesostigmata. Members of the families Cheyletidae and Acaridae were the most common mites, found in many samples. Those of Caligonellidae, Ascidae and Raphignathidae were fairly common, but occurred in fewer types of samples. No mites were found in samples of lupine and camomile.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical behaviour of the superplastic Zn-22% Al eutectoid is divisible into three distinct regions. Experiments show the deformation is quasi-uniform at intermediate strain rates in region II, but neck formation is important at low strain rates in region I. Extensive cavitation occurs in regions I and II, but fracture in region I is due to necking. The results provide strong evidence for a decrease in the true value of the strain rate sensitivity in region I.

Notes: Abstract Experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of prestraining on the ductility of the superplastic Pb-62 wt % Sn eutectic alloy at room temperature. It is shown that prestraining at a fast strain rate in region III leads to a decrease in the elongation to failure on subsequent testing at a slower rate in region II. This decrease is due to the development of strain inhomogeneities during the prestrain. There is a further decrease in elongation if a holding time is inserted between the prestrain in region III and the subsequent testing in region II. It is shown also that prestraining at a slow strain rate leads to a sharp increase in the elongation to failure on subsequent testing at a fast strain rate. The reasons for these trends are discussed with reference to the occurrence of grain growth and the uniformity of strain.

Notes: Abstract Aspects of the biology ofCheyletus cacahuamilpensis Baker a predatory mite of the associated lawn grass pestDolichotetranychus floridanus (Banks) were studied. Apart from a larval stage immature females ofC. cacahuamilpensis pass through 2 nymphal stages, while the male has only 1 before reaching adulthood. At 27°C the life cycle and adult longevity respectively averaged 30.1 & 34.4 days for the female and 22.8 & 16.4 days for the male. In a 20.4 days oviposition period 28 eggs were laid. Immature and adult females devoured an average of 80.4 & 143.2D. floridanus, while those of the males consumed 40.8 & 63.6 individuals respectively. Thus the total number ofD. floridanus attacked during the predator's life span averaged 223.6 per female and 104.4. per male.
