    Description: The status of the numerical reproduction of the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) by current global models was assessed through diagnoses of four pairs of coupled and uncoupled simulations. Slow eastward propagation of the MJO, especially in low-level zonal wind, is realistic in all these simulations. However, the simulated MJO suffers from several common problems. The MJO signal in precipitation is generally too weak and often eroded by an unrealistic split of an equatorial maximum of precipitation into a double ITCZ structure over the western Pacific. The MJO signal in low-level zonal wind, on the other hand, is sometimes too strong over the eastern Pacific but too weak over the Indian Ocean. The observed phase relationship between precipitation and low-level zonal wind associated with the MJO in the western Pacific and their coherence in general are not reproduced by the models. The seasonal migration in latitude of MJO activity is missing in most simulations. Air–sea coupling generally strengthens the simulated eastward propagating signal, but its effects on the phase relationship and coherence between precipitation and low-level zonal wind, and on their geographic distributions, seasonal cycles, and interannual variability are inconsistent among the simulations. Such inconsistency cautions generalization of results from MJO simulations using a single model. In comparison to observations, biases in the simulated MJO appear to be related to biases in the background state of mean precipitation, low-level zonal wind, and boundary-layer moisture convergence. This study concludes that, while the realistic simulations of the eastward propagation of the MJO are encouraging, reproducing other fundamental features of the MJO by current global models remains an unmet challenge.

    Description: This is the report on the Fisheries Aspects of North West Water Authority Schemes to Increase Water Abstraction in West Cumbria by the Egremont and District Anglers’ Association. Existing river pollution and water abstraction in the Ennerdale Lake-River Ehen system is shown to have caused a major deterioration in the conditions in the Ehen fishery. This is reflected by the fact that catches of salmon, sea trout and smelts on the Ehen have all fallen to roughly 6% of the 1965 level; wich is far worse than the deterioration shown in salmon catches for S. W. Cumberland as a whole. Recommendations are made, in the light of proposals by North West Water Authority to increase water abstraction in West Cumbria, to prevent further deterioration in the Ehen fishery in the short term and to improve the situation in the longer term. It contains sections on pollution, water abstraction and fisheries background, flow statistics for and discussion of high water-droughts on the River Ehen, effects of droughts on Tidal Water and a discussion of N.W.W.A. Paper entitled `Water Resources in West Cumbria’ in the light of conditions on the River Ehen.

    Notes: Recent reports on mass-diffusion forced Rayleigh scattering (FRS) experiments have emphasized that the detected signal arises as a difference between two exponentially decaying fields diffracted from "complementary" ground-state and photoproduct population gratings. A mass-diffusion coefficient has nevertheless often been extracted by forcing a single-exponential fit to the data, especially in cases where the decay appears to be monotonic. In this paper, we use simulations and experiments to evaluate the accuracy of single-exponential fits for FRS profiles, and we propose a useful alternative method for obtaining a meaningful rate constant in cases in which the error in the single-exponential analysis is large. We begin by noting from the complementary grating model that (1) severe deviations from single-exponential decay can occur for an arbitrarily small (but nonzero) difference in the ground-state/photoproduct rate constants, and (2) the first cumulant of a FRS decay—in contrast to that of a dynamic light scattering profile—does not (in general) represent a physically useful decay rate. These statements apply to both monotonic and nonmonotonic decays. We then show that a combination of the first two FRS cumulants provides a physically useful mean rate constant. Finally, to address these issues experimentally, we have reexamined the diffusion of methyl red (MR) through 2-propanol at room temperature, a system previously analyzed using single-exponential fits. The new experiments, carried out at higher sensitivity than the previous studies, show that the MR/2-propanol signal is nonmonotonic. The geometric-mean diffusion coefficient obtained from the curvature of the local maximum is compared to the diffusion coefficient inferred from single-exponential fits, and it is found that the latter is larger by nearly a factor of 2. The results reported here should prove important in improving the accuracy of the FRS technique. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic microstructure of SrRuO3 thin films is studied using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The zero-field-cooled magnetic stripe structure shows one-to-one correlation with the crystal domain structure and is used to identify the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of these films, consistent with results on single domain films. The anisotropy is shown to be primarily magnetocrystalline in nature with the b axis as the easy axis. Lorentz TEM also yields quantitative information about the domain structure and domain wall resistivity, and allows for in situ observation of domain wall formation and dynamic response to an applied field. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The roles of composition and oxygen pressure in in situ growth of superconducting YBaCuO films have been studied. Anomalous results are observed at low oxygen pressure. Off-stoichiometric, Ba-deficient films have superior superconducting properties and more bulk-like crystal structure compared to films made on the 1:2:3 stoichiometry. Films made at low pressure have an expanded c axis compared to the bulk value, although their Tc's are only slightly depressed. Tc and c-axis lattice parameters are reported as a function of the deposition conditions.
