    Rapid infection of oral mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue with simian immunodeficiency virus (1999)

    Description: The early events during infection with an immunodeficiency virus were followed by application of pathogenic simian immunodeficiency virus atraumatically to the tonsils of macaques. Analyses by virologic assays and in situ hybridization revealed that the infection started locally in the tonsils, a mucosal-associated lymphoid organ, and quickly spread to other lymphoid tissues. At day 3, there were few infected cells, but then the number increased rapidly, reaching a high plateau between days 4 and 7. The infection was not detected in the dendritic cell-rich squamous epithelium to which the virus was applied; instead, it was primarily in CD4+ tonsillar T cells, close to the specialized antigen-transporting epithelium of the tonsillar crypts.     Replication of HIV-1 in dendritic cell-derived syncytia at the mucosal surface of the adenoid (1996)

    Description: Human immunodeficiency virus-type 1 (HIV-1) replicates actively in infected individuals, yet cells with intracellular depots of viral protein are observed only infrequently. Many cells expressing the HIV-1 Gag protein were detected at the surface of the nasopharyngeal tonsil or adenoid. This infected mucosal surface contained T cells and dendritic cells, two cell types that together support HIV-1 replication in culture. The infected cells were multinucleated syncytia and expressed the S100 and p55 dendritic cell markers. Eleven of the 13 specimens analyzed were from donors who did not have symptoms of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).     Behavioural resilience in sea bass (2016)

    Description: Ocean acidification (OA)—caused by rising concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO 2 )—is thought to be a major threat to marine ecosystems and has been shown to induce behavioural alterations in fish. Here we show behavioural resilience to near-future OA in a commercially important and migratory marine finfish, the Sea bass ( Dicentrarchus labrax ). Sea bass were raised from eggs at 19°C in ambient or near-future OA (1000 µatm p CO 2 ) conditions and n = 270 fish were observed 59–68 days post-hatch using automated tracking from video. Fish reared under ambient conditions, OA conditions, and fish reared in ambient conditions but tested in OA water showed statistically similar movement patterns, and reacted to their environment and interacted with each other in comparable ways. Thus our findings indicate behavioural resilience to near-future OA in juvenile sea bass. Moreover, simulated agent-based models indicate that our analysis methods are sensitive to subtle changes in fish behaviour. It is now important to determine whether the absences of any differences persist under more ecologically relevant circumstances and in contexts which have a more direct bearing on individual fitness.

    Near-vent chemical processes in a hydrothermal plume: Insights from an integrated study of the Endeavour segment (2017)

    Description: The Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca mid-ocean ridge is one of the best-studied ridge segments and has recently been instrumented as part of Ocean Networks Canada's NEPTUNE cabled observatory. Here we investigate the interaction between high-temperature vent fluids and the overlying water column. A new tow-yo survey found the average temperature anomaly in the neutrally buoyant plume was ∼0.043°C. The water column temperature and light attenuation anomalies correlate linearly in some areas of the plume but in other areas there is a low light attenuation anomaly relative to the temperature anomaly. This temperature excess is interpreted to reflect heat input through (particle poor) diffuse flow. If this is correct, about half of the heat flux along the Endeavour segment comes from diffuse flow. Sediment trap and push core data show the mass accumulation rate of the hydrothermal component of the sediments decreases rapidly with distance from the major vent fields. Large changes in the composition of the hydrothermal component of the sediments also occur with distance from the vent fields. The composition of the sediments indicates: (i) sulfides precipitate early and accumulate most rapidly close to the vents with a preferential order of element removal from the plume of Cd〉Ag〉Cu〉Co∼Fe; (ii) barite is deposited somewhat further from the vents. Strontium and Pb appear to be strongly incorporated in barite and/or other sulfate minerals; and (iii) at most a few percent of the mass of these “insoluble” elements that is vented gets deposited within 1.5 km of the vents.
