    Right-left asymmetrics in the brain (1978)

    Description: Structural asymmetries between the hemispheres are found in the human brain. Asymmetries in the auditory regions and in the Sylvian fissures are present even in the fetus. The Sylvian asymmetries may have existed in Neanderthal man and are found consistently in some apes. They may relate to right-left differences infunction. Thus, the striking auditory asymmetries could underlie language lateralization. The asymmetries in the frontal and occipital lobes and the lateral ventricles are correlated with hand preference.     The THO complex cooperates with the nuclear RNA surveillance machinery to control small nucleolar RNA expression (2012)

    Description: THO is a multi-protein complex that promotes coupling between transcription and mRNA processing. In contrast to its role in mRNA biogenesis, we show here that the fission yeast THO complex negatively controls the expression of non-coding small nucleolar (sno) RNAs. Accordingly, the deletion of genes encoding subunits of the evolutionarily conserved THO complex results in increased levels of mature snoRNAs. We also show physical and functional connections between THO and components of the TRAMP polyadenylation complex, whose loss of function also results in snoRNA accumulation. Consistent with a role in snoRNA expression, we demonstrate that THO and TRAMP complexes are recruited to snoRNA genes, and that a functional THO complex is required to maintain TRAMP occupancy at sites of snoRNA transcription. Our findings suggest that THO promotes exosome-mediated degradation of snoRNA precursors by ensuring the presence of the TRAMP complex at snoRNA genes. This study unveils an unexpected role for THO in the control of snoRNA expression and provides a new link between transcription and nuclear RNA decay.

    Notes: Abstract A genomic clone, Pis G363, containing the Brassica napus stigma-expressed gene Pis 63-2 was isolated and sequenced. The coding region of Pis G363 does not possess introns and shows 82% identity to the nucleotide sequence of a gene from Arabidopsis BAC clone T01B08. A 2-kb promoter fragment from Pis G363 was fused to the coding sequence of the marker enzyme β-glucuronidase (GUS) and introduced into tobacco via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The promoter fragment directed expression of the GUS gene in the stigma of transgenic tobacco. Some transformants also showed relatively low GUS activity in the pollen.

    Notes: Summary The feasibility of identifying molecular markers linked to disease resistance genes in oats was investigated utilizing random primers in conjunction with polymerase chain reaction technology. A pair of near-isogenic oat lines were screened for polymorphic DNA fragments linked to the stem rust resistance gene Pg3. Two primers were identified which amplified DNA fragments that were polymorphic between the lines analyzed. One primer (ACOpR-2) was shown to be completely linked to the Pg3 locus; the other primer was not linked to either the ACOpR-2 or the Pg3 loci. This type of analysis, combined with rapid leaf disc DNA extraction techniques, offers an effective means of identifying useful molecular markers and of applying them to plant breeding selection strategies.

    Description: An operator workload measurement methodology is presented which will be used in support of the Mark IVA operational test and evaluation plan. Three operator workload measures are suggested: operator ratings, primary task work measures, and information processing time measures. A method of validating the workload measures using secondary task work measures is presented. It is expected that operations testing using these measures will assist in establishing the time required to perform essential operational activities and will indicate high risk operations areas due to potential operator overload.

    Measuring Computer-Operator Workload (1987)

    Description: Subjective and objective measurements found to correlate and complement each other. Two ways of measuring workload of operator in large interactive computer system have shown meaningful and easy to use. One method based on operators' ratings of stress after subtasks in continuous task. Other method based on workload ratio, W, ratio of time required for operator to do subtask to time allowed for it. Both sensitive to workload level and individual subtasks in continuing interactive computer task. Pinpoints subtasks that press operator and use up too much available time, perhaps leading to operator errors and even failure of system. Gives clear indication when operator approaches allowed time and shows when risk of trouble becomes high.
