Abstract Pulsed-magnetic-field therapy for non-union of the tibia is becoming, in some centres, an established orthopaedic technique. The field is generated by passing pulses of current through coils positioned around the leg, but the mechanism of interaction is not understood. This paper gives a qualitative description of the fields produced and then develops a theoretical model to calculate the fields for simple geometries. Good agreement is found between calculation and measurement, validating the model and showing that the form of the fields produced in a limb can now be described.
