    Notes: A qualitative model for the sequence of phase transforma-tions leading to perovskite phase formation in sol–gel-derived PZT thin films is presented. It is suggested that for sol–gel-derived Pb(ZrxTi1–x)O3 (x = 0.4) thin films, prepared using the molecularly modified alkoxide precursors (MMAP) approach, complete (or partial) conversion of the originally amorphous film into a “pyrochlore” phase, although possible, may not be necessary. Differences between the sequence of phase formation encountered in the tradi-tional (oxide-mix) synthesis and that in chemically derived ceramics are discussed. The sequence of phase formation in these thin films also appears to be intertwined with the texture development in that a (111) PZT texture develop-ment appears to be controlled by nucleation of the perovs-kite phase, assisted by a solid-phase epitaxial effect, and the (100)/(001) texture appears to be growth controlled.x

    Notes: Abstract Some of our recent work on computer simulation modeling of the sol-to-gel transition for the polymerization by step reaction are presented. Depending on the variants of the model, a random distribution of bifunctional and tetrafunctional monomers of concentration C2 and C4 respectively, and their chains (bond-fluctuating) are used as primary reacting units on a simple cubic lattice as the initial sol-phase. Effects of solvent, temperature, mobility of monomers, rate of reaction, and reversibility are considered in understanding the evolution of microgels, onset of gelation and the nature of sol-to-gel transition, inhomogeneity, etc. Gel point (pc, gel volume fraction (PG), weight average degree of polymerization (MW), structure factor (S(q, t)) show various interesting variations with the conversion factor (p). For example, sol-to-gel transition seems nonuniversal with respect to quality of the solvent, degree of inhomogeneity depends on the quality of solvent and rate of reaction due to interplay between the phase-separation and cross-linking.

    Description: Professor Yanai is remembered in our hearts as an esteemed friend. Based on his accomplishments in tropical meteorology and with his flashes of insight he led his group at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the 1980s and 1990s to explore the thermal features of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) and its relation to the Asian monsoon, and he brought forward the TP meteorology established by Ye Duzheng et al. in 1957 to a new stage. In cherishing the memory of Professor Yanai and his great contribution to the TP meteorology, the authors review their recent study on the impacts of the TP and contribute this chapter as an extension of their chapter titled “Effects of the Tibetan Plateau” published by Yanai and Wu in 2006 in the book The Asian Monsoon. The influence of a large-scale orography on climate depends not only on the mechanical and thermal forcing it exerts on the atmosphere, but also on the background atmospheric circulation. In winter the TP possesses two leading heating modes resulting from the relevant dominant atmospheric circulations, in particular the North Atlantic Oscillation and the North Pacific Oscillation. The prevailing effect of the mechanical forcing of the TP in wintertime generates a dipole type of circulation, in which the anticyclonic gyre in the middle and high latitudes contributes to the warm inland area to the west, and the cold seashore area to the east, of northeast Asia, whereas the cyclonic gyre in low latitudes contributes to the formation of a prolonged dry season over central and southern Asia and moist climate over southeastern Asia. Such a dipole circulation also generates a unique persistent rainfall in early spring (PRES) over southern China. In 1980s, Yanai and his colleagues analyzed the in situ observation and found that the constant potential temperature boundary layer over the TP can reach about 300 hPa before the summer monsoon onset. This study supports these findings, and demonstrates that such a boundary layer structure is a consequence of the atmospheric thermal adaptation to the surface sensible heating, which vanishes quickly with increasing height. The overshooting of rising air, which is induced by surface sensible heating, then can form a layer of constant potential temperature with a thickness of several kilometers. The thermal forcing of the TP on the lower tropospheric circulation looks like a sensible heat–driven air pump (SHAP). It is the surface sensible heating on the sloping sides of the plateau that the SHAP can effectively influence the Asian monsoon circulation. In spring the SHAP contributes to the seasonal abrupt change of the Asian circulation and anchors the earliest Asian summer monsoon onset over the eastern Bay of Bengal. In summer, this pumping, together with the thermal forcing over the Iranian Plateau, produces bimodality in the South Asian high activity in the upper troposphere, which is closely related to the climate anomaly patterns over South and East Asia. Because the isentropic surfaces in the middle and lower troposphere intersect with the TP, in summertime the plateau becomes a strong negative vorticity source of the atmosphere and affects the surrounding climate and even the Northern Hemispheric circulation via Rossby wave energy dispersion. Future prospects in related TP studies are also addressed.

    Description: Due to the low grade of V2O5 in stone coal, the existing vanadium extraction technologies face challenges in terms of large handling capacity, high acid consumption and production cost. The pre-concentration of vanadium from stone coal before the extraction process is an effective method to reduce cost. In this study, detailed mineral characterization of stone coal was investigated. It has been confirmed that the vanadium mainly occurs in muscovite and illite. A significant demand for an effective pre-concentration process with simple manipulation for discarding quartz and other gangue minerals is expected. Based on the mineralogical study, a new vanadium pre-concentration process using a fine mineral spiral was investigated. The experimental results showed that the separation process, which was comprised of a rougher and scavenger, could efficiently discard quartz, pyrite and apatite. A final concentrate with V2O5 grade of 1.02% and recovery of 89.6% could be obtained, with 26.9% of the raw ore being discarded as final tailings.

    Description: The calculation and characterization of the IR spectrum of liquid water have remained a challenge for theory. In this paper, we address this challenge using a combination of ab initio approaches, namely, a quantum treatment of IR spectrum using the ab initio WHBB water potential energy surface and a refined ab initio dipole moment surface. The quantum treatment is based on the embedded local monomer method, in which the three intramolecular modes of each embedded H 2 O monomer are fully coupled and also coupled singly to each of six intermolecular modes. The new dipole moment surface consists of a previous spectroscopically accurate 1-body dipole moment surface and a newly fitted ab initio intrinsic 2-body dipole moment. A detailed analysis of the new dipole moment surface in terms of the coordinate dependence of the effective atomic charges is done along with tests of it for the water dimer and prism hexamer double-harmonic spectra against direct ab initio calculations. The liquid configurations are taken from previous molecular dynamics calculations of Skinner and co-workers, using the TIP4P plus E3B rigid monomer water potential. The IR spectrum of water at 300 K in the range of 0–4000 cm −1 is calculated and compared with experiment, using the ab initio WHBB potential and new ab initio dipole moment, the q-TIP4P/F potential, which has a fixed-charged description of the dipole moment, and the TTM3-F potential and dipole moment surfaces. The newly calculated ab initio spectrum is in very good agreement with experiment throughout the above spectral range, both in band positions and intensities. This contrasts to results with the other potentials and dipole moments, especially the fixed-charge q-TIP4P/F model, which gives unrealistic intensities. The calculated ab initio spectrum is analyzed by examining the contribution of various transitions to each band.
