Notes: A novel approach to form low threshold laser structures, similar to existing mass-transported lasers but without the second regrowth step, is described. The laser has comparable performance in threshold current and quantum efficiency to more conventional buried heterostructure lasers made with a two-step process. Because of the simplicity in fabrication and its reduced parasitic capacitance it has the potential to be low cost and to have high modulation bandwidth.

Notes: Diode-array-pumped HgCdTe/CdZnTe broad-stripe quantum-well lasers operated at 88 K yielded 1.3 W peak power and 10 mW average power per facet at 3.2 μm. The highest operation temperature was 154 K, and the characteristic temperature of the threshold was 16 K. The external quantum efficiency was ∼7.5% at ∼80 K and decreased by an order of magnitude at 150 K.

Notes: Abstract: Three new bands in 174Ta have been identified by using the 160Gd(19F,5n) reaction at beam energies of 87 MeV and 96 MeV. Nilsson configurations are assigned to these bands. In the 9/2−[514]p+5/2−[512]n band, the AB neutron crossing occurs at a rotational frequency of 0.30 MeV. This is indicative of the disappearance of the evidence for a reduction in neutron pair correlations.

Notes: Summary The motion of an asymmetrical gyrostat with external or internal energy dissipation is discussed by use of the qualitative method. The attitude motion of the gyrostat is described by two angular coordinates of the total angular momentum H relative to a body-fixed reference frame. The dynamical equation is written for an autonomous system whose singularity corresponds to the permanent rotation of the gyrostat. The global motion of the gyrostat is determined by the number and distribution of singularities. The type of each singularity varies with the variation of mass geometry and rotor speed, and a bifurcation phenomenon can be observed.

Notes: Summary In this paper, the global behavior of relative equilibrium states of a three-body satellite with flexible connection under the action of the gravitational torque is studied. With geometric method, the conditions of existence of nontrivial solutions to the relative equilibrium equations are determined. By using reduction method and singularity theory, the conditions of occurrence of bifurcation from trivial solutions are derived, which agree with the existence conditions of nontrivial solutions, and the bifurcation is proved to be pitchfork-bifurcation. The Liapunov stability of each equilibrium state is considered, and a stability diagram in terms of system parameters is presented.

Notes: Summary The stability of a fluid-filled top rotating on a rough horizontal plane about the erect axis is discussed and a stability criterion in analytical form is obtained. A sufficient condition of stability for a fluid-filled Chaplygin sphere is proved by using Lyapunov's direct method, and a more satisfactory explanation to Kelvin's question considering the influence of gravity and sliding friction is given. The fluid-filled Lagrange gyro is discussed as a special case when the plane is absolutely smooth.

Notes: Summary The stability problem of the permanent rotation of a torque-free multibody system with spherical joints is discussed by use of Liapunov's direct method. The system is described by the Hooker-Margulies equations in vector-dyadic form, and there exist the integrals of angular momentum and of energy for the torque-free case. The first integrals obtained are used to establish the Liapunov function, then a stability criterion in analytical form is found for the system composed of two symmetrical bodies coupled by a frictionless joint. It is proven that the permanent rotation of such a system about the coincident axis of symmetry is always stable.

Notes: Summary The attitude motion of an asymmetric magnetic gyrostat satellite in a circular orbit subjected to both gravitational and magnetic forces of the earth is investigated by using the version of Melnikov's method developed for a two-degree of freedom Hamiltonian system withS 1 symmetry. For this purpose Deptrit's canonical variables are introduced to establish the Hamiltonian structure for this problem. It is found that the motion is chaotic in the sense of Smale's horseshoe under certain conditions. The effects of the magnetic moment of the gyrostat and the speed of the rotor in the gyrostat on the global motion are also studied by numerical computation. It is shown that as the magnetic moment of the gyrostat increases, the chaotic area in the Poincaré map will enlarge; as the rotor speed increases, a chaotic motion will turn into a regular motion.
