Notes: Nitrate reductase (NR. EC 1.6.6.1/2) is a substrate inducible enzyme that could be repressed by its end product glutamine or amino acids. To test this hypothesis, 6-day-old maize seedlings (Zea mays cv. W64A × W182E) were grown hydroponically in a 1/10 strength Hougland's salt solution modified to contain no nitrogen. Previous experiments had established that after a 24-h induction with NO3− (5 mM KNO3−) the level of NR activity and protein had reached a constant level. In the present experiments when glutamine (5 mM) was included together with NO3−, there was a significant reduction in NR activity (34% of the control values). NR protein and NR mRNA accumulation in the root. In the shoot, on the other hand, glutamine additions had little or no effect on the levels of either NR activity (81% of control) or NR protein. Inhibition of glutamine synthetase by methionine sulfoximine (MSX) resulted in reduced levels of glutamine in both root and shoot tissues. Contrary in our prediction, however, it had no effect on NR activity and mRNA content in roots. In the shoot, on the other hand, there was a marked reduction of NR activity (34% of the control value) and NR protein, but no apparent effect on NR mRNA. When detached shoots were treated with MSX and other inhibitors of glutamine synthetase (tabtoxinine-β-lactam or phosphinothricin) the induction of NR activity by NO3− was also inhibited. Glutamine additions 15 or 50 mM to detached shoots had essentially no effect on the induction of NR activity (90% of control). These results demonstrate that the influence of glutamine and MSX on the induction of NR in maize root and shoot tissues, respectively, is very different.

Notes: A new finishing technology of the swirling air flow compounded with magnetic-field isadvanced. Force acting on abrasive is analyzed by the action of airstream and magnetic-field couplingaccording to gas-solid particles two-phase flow. Finishing mechanism on the swirling air flowcompounded with magnetic-field is illustrated, namely, burrs and microcosmic peak on the surface ofworkpiece are broken, grinded and cut via a great deal of abrasive particle impacting, microchippingand rolling machined surface. Unthreaded hole is experimented on the condition of changingmagnetic induction intensity B and machining time t. Changing curve of surface roughness Ra alongwith time t is shown. Research indicates that machining time of the swirling air flow compoundedwith magnetic-field is short and machining efficiency is high. The longer machining time is, thesmaller surface roughness Ra is and the better machining effect is

Notes: Based on a high power CO2 laser beam passing by pyramid polygon mirror, the bioceramiccoatings of gradient composition were fabricated on titanium alloy substrate (Ti-6Al-4V). The relationsamong laser processing parameters, microstructure and biocompatibility of the gradient bioceramiccoatings were investigated. The results indicated that the contents of rare earth oxide additions had animmediate effect on the formation of bioactive phases. The gradient bioceramic coatings showedfavorable biocompatibility in vivo after they were implanted into canine femur for 45, 90, and 180 days, respectively. The bioceramic coatings of Ca/P=1.4 and 0.6wt.% Y2O3 totally combined with new bonesmerely implanted for 45 days. Furthermore, the MTT (Methyl Thiazolyl Tetrazolium) colorimetry resultsof cell proliferation demonstrated that the cell growth distinctly increased on the gradient bioceramiccoatings by laser cladding compared with the un-treated titanium alloy substrate

Notes: Based on a high power CO2 laser beam passing by an integral mirror, the bioceramiccoatings of gradient composition were designed and fabricated on titanium alloy substrate(Ti-6Al-4V). The relations among laser processing parameters, microstructure and thermal behaviorof the gradient bioceramic coatings were investigated. The morphology of the composites wasobserved by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Phase composition of the coatings was analyzedby X-ray diffraction (XRD). And the thermal behavior of raw powders was evaluated through thermalgravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) test. The results demonstrated that thebioceramic coatings were metallurgically bonded to the titanium alloy substrate. The bioceramiccoatings contained such bioactive phases as HA and β-TCP, which offered an advantageous conditionfor osseo-connection. The DSC thermograms showed the endothermic peaks at different temperature, which resulted from the different transitions process, respectively. Furthermore, the DSC results werein accordance with TG data of the powders and showed that with the increasing temperature theweight of sample accordingly decreased

Notes: Nanometer cobalt oxide powders were obtained by decomposition of precursors CoC2O4×2H2O at 350°C for 3h. The precursors were synthesized by solid-state reaction with H2C2O4×2H2O and CoCO3 under microwave irradiation. The products were characterized by XRD and TEM. The results showed that the nanometer Co3O4 is cubic and the mean particle is 19 nm with narrow distribution and weak agglomeration

Notes: Recycling old concrete as an alternative source for production new concrete can solve the environment produced by old concrete. To make such recycling feasible, the strength and durability of the recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) must be assured. Prepared recycled coarse and fine aggregate using natural concrete specimens produced by compressive strength test of cubic concrete. Prepared recycled aggregate concrete which replacement ratios is 50% and 70%. Processed compressive strength test of cubic RAC specimens. Carried through the test for resistance of concrete to rapid freezing and thawing on both RAC and natural concrete. As a result of the experiment, the strength of the RAC can reach the design strength, however, the index for the resistance of concrete to rapid freezing and thawing depressed to a certainty degree relative to that of common concrete. Replacement ratio of aggregate influenced relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of RAC seriously. The weight change increased as long as the number of freezing and thawing cycles increased, and the weight change increased when replacement ratio elevation. RAC showed a sharp weight loss during the testing period, and reduce the water cement ratio can increase the durability characteristics of RAC. Also, absorption of the recycled aggregate influenced durability properties of RAC badly

Notes: The Fe50Co50 magnetic films were prepared by magnetron sputtering onto glass substrates. The structural and magnetic properties of the films were investigated as a function of annealingtemperature and annealing time. It is found that the films have the better crystallization orientationafter annealing. The in-plane coercivity Hc reduces with increasing annealing temperature andannealing time. Coercivity reaches the minimum in the sample annealed at 600˚C for 2h. Meanwhile, the saturation magnetization Ms increases with increasing annealing temperature as a whole. Ascanning probe microscope was used to scan surface morphology and magnetic domain structures. After annealing, the domain size becomes larger and the contrast of domains increases

Notes: The Mo surface alloying layer was prepared on Ti6Al4V substrate using the plasmasurface alloying technique. The component, structure and hardness of the Mo surface alloying layer were investigated. The impact test was used to determine the fatigue behavior of the Mo surface modified Ti6Al4V. The results showed that the Mo surface alloying layer enhanced the surface strength of Ti6Al4V substrate. The Mo surface alloying layer has a duplex structure with diffusing and coating layers. The diffusing layer in which the component and hardness change gradually could enhance load-bearing capacity to the surface coating and ensure the durability of the coating. In the impact test, the Mo modified Ti6Al4V showed excellent fatigue behavior and the cohesive failure mode was observed

Notes: The microstructure and the coercivity of nanocomposite Nd4.5Fe76.5-xGaxCo1.0B18 (x=0~0.6at%)bonded magnets were studied. The results showed that addition of small amount of Ga in Nd4.5Fe76.5-xGaxCo1.0B18 made the grains finer and more uniform. A notable peak of coercivity was observed in the variational curve of coercivity with annealing time when Ga content was low (x=0.2). This phenomenon could be explained by the microstructure and the exchange couplinginteraction of two-phase nanocomposite

Notes: Abstract Two different cytoplasmic male-sterility (CMS) systems, nap and pol, are found in the oilseed rape (canola) species Brassica napus. Physical mapping studies have previously shown that organizational differences between the sterile pol and fertile cam mitochondrial genomes are restricted to a relatively small region immediately upstream of the atp6 gene. An approximately 4.5-kb pol mtDNA segment containing a chimeric open reading frame (orf224) co-transcribed with atp6 is missing from cam mtDNA and located at a different site on nap mtDNA; expression of the orf224/atp6 gene region is highly correlated with the pol CMS trait. Sequence analysis now shows that the transposed nap segment contains an open reading frame (ORF) related to, but distinct from, pol orf224. This open reading frame (orf222) potentially encodes a protein of 222 amino acids possessing 79% sequence similarity to the predicted product of the pol orf224 gene. nap orf222 is co-transcribed with the third exon of the trans-spliced nad5 gene and another ORF. orf222 transcripts are several times more abundant in nap CMS than in fertility restored nap-cytoplasm plants and qualitative transcript differences for the region between CMS and restored plants are found as well. Expression of the orf222/nad5c/orf139 region is specifically correlated with nap CMS: of 21 mitochondrial gene regions examined, including all the sites of rearrangement between the nap and fertile cam mitochondrial genomes and 22 known genes, only the orf222/nad5c/orf139 region detected transcript differences between maintainer cam cytoplasm, nap CMS- and fertility restored nap cytoplasm-plants. Our results suggest that expression of the orf222/nad5c/orf139 region may be associated with nap CMS, and, more generally, that different forms of CMS may be associated with genes encoding structurally similar proteins.
