    Notes: Titanium carbide (TiC) has been synthesized by mechanically alloying the elemental powder mixture of titanium and graphite at composition of Ti1−xCx (x=0.35, 0.43, 0.50). Under the employed milling condition, the formation of TiC has been found to undergo an abrupt, exothermic reaction. The final product is TiC for x=0.43 and 0.50, and TiC+Ti (small amount) for x=0.35. It is suggested that this reaction appears to be a self-sustained high-temperature synthesis process. The initial milling stage seems to be an incubation duration for the reaction, and the mechanical impacts to be the ignition of the following abrupt reaction. It is believed that this type of reaction is an important mechanism for mechanical alloying of the highly exothermic alloy systems. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the first low threshold, buried heterostructure (BH) vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) using organometallic chemical vapor deposition regrowth. Very low threshold current of 0.8 mA and threshold current density of 490 A/cm2 are achieved with 8 and 32 μm diam BH VCSELs, respectively. Both 8 and 16 μm diam BH VCSELs emit a single TEM00 fundamental mode for current levels many times thresholds. Most single-mode emissions are linearly polarized with a predetermined direction in the [01¯1] crystal orientation.

    Notes: Summary An improved method for the determination of nucleic acid content in edible mushrooms is described. Details of tissue homogenization and extraction are also included. In regard to the limit suggested by the Protein Advisory Group of the United Nations System, the amount of nucleic acids found in Agaricus bisporus, Pleurotus cystidiosus, Pleurotus sajor-caju and Volvariella volvacea indicates that it is safe to consume mushrooms as daily vegetable. No significant changes have been found in the nucleic acid content of V. volvacea at different degrees of maturity. V. volvacea loses around 20% of its nucleic acids upon boiling for 10 min. Possible reasons for the discrepancy between the present finding and that given in an earlier report have been discussed.

    Notes: Abstract High spin states in90Tc have been studied via the58Ni (35Cl, 2pn) 90Tc reaction at beam energy of 124 MeV. Twenty-six newγ-rays were observed, a new level scheme was established and spins were assigned. Two band-like structures were established up to about 20ħ with an excitation energy of 6–7 MeV. The band (B) shows collective characteristic at high spin. We suggest it to be of a quasi-particle configurationπg9/2⊗vf 5/2.

    Notes: Abstract The high-spin states in197Bi have been studied with the187Re(16O, 6n)197Bi reaction at16O energies between 85 and 105 MeV. In-beam measurements ofγ-ray excitation functions,γ-γ-t coincidences and γray angular distributions were carried out with 6 BGO(AC) HPGe detectors and one intrinsic Ge planar detector. 11 new transitions and 3 new isomers at 2089, 2357 and 1968+Δ keV with t1/2 =19.3±4.9, 53.4±20.5 and 18.0±3.1 ns., respectively, were observed, and a level scheme is established. Some differences between the present work and the previous results were found.

    Notes: Abstract High spin states of117Xe have been investigated by means of in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using the reaction92Mo(28Si, 2pn) at beam energies of 100 to 120 MeV. The previously known νh11/2 bands are confirmed and the νg7/2 favored-signature band is extended up to 47/2+, in which two band crossings are observed at ħω=0.33 and 0.44 MeV, respectively. Two new positive-parity bands have been established, one of which is most likely the νg7/2 unfavored-signature band. A new transition cascade with irregular level spacings is also observed.

Les cellules mycéliales ont été traitées par deux enzymes mycolytiques, Novozym 234 et lywallzyme. Par traitement avec le lywallzyme, des protoplastes ont été obtenus avec tous les champignons comestibles étudiés,P. sajor-caju donnant le rendement le plus élevé (3.84×107/ml), suivi parAu. auricula (7.46×106/ml,Ag. bisporus (2.16×106/ml etV. volvacea 1.92×106/ml). Avec le Novozym 234,Ag. bisporus a donné le rendement en protoplastes le moins élevé. Les effets de différentes molarités de stabilisateurs osmotiques ont également été étudiés. La méthode de la cellophane est simple et rapide et peut être employée comme procédé de degrossissage. Les rendements en protoplastes obtenus à partir des cultures liquides sont habituellement plus élevés que ceux à partir des cultures sur cellophane.
    Abstract: Resumen Para el aislamiento de protoplastos de cepas deAgaricus bisporus, Auricularia auricula,Lentinus edodes, Pleurotus sajor-caju, Volvariella bombycina, y V. volvacea se utilizo micelio periferico de colonias que estaban en crecimiento activo en celofan y en frascos de agitación. Las celulas del micelio se tratarón con dos enzymas mycoliticos: Novozym 234 y lywallzyme. Todas las setas comestibles ensayadas produjerón protoplastos. Mediante tratamiento con lywallzyme la mejor cosecha de protoplastos la proporcionoP. sajor-caju (3.84×107/ml) seguido porAu. auricula (7.46×106/ml),Ag. bisporus (2.16×106/ml) yV. volvacea (1.92×106/ml). Con Novozym 234Ag. bisporus fué la de menor rendimiento. También se estudiarón los efectos de distintos estabilizadores osmoticos a diferentes molaridades.
    Notes: Summary Mycelium from the periphery of actively growing colonies on cellophane and from shake flask cultures was used for the isolation of protoplasts from strains ofAgaricus bisporus,Auricularia auricula, Lentinus edodes, Pleurotus sajor-caju, Volvariella bombycina andV. volvacea. The mycelial cells were treated with two mycolytic enzymes, Novozym 234 or lywallzyme. Protoplasts were produced from all the edible fungi tested.Pleurotus sajor-caju gave the highest yield (3.84×107/ml), followed byAu. auricula (7.46×106/ml),Ag. bisporus (2.16×106/ml) andV. volvacea (1.92×106/ml), when treated with lywallzyme.Agaricus bisporus gave the smallest yield of protoplasts when Novozym 234 was used. The effects of different molarities of osmotic stabilizers were also studied. The cellophane method is simple and quick and can be used as a screening procedure. The yields of protoplasts obtained from liquid cultures were usually higher than those from cellophane cultures.

    Notes: We have carried out theoretical calculations to analyze molecular interactions and proton transfer mechanisms in the formate-imidazole-water system, which may be considered the simplest model of catalytic triads in serine proteases. Computations were carried out at the density functional theory level. The effect of a dielectric environment on energy surfaces is considered using a polarizable continuum model and the self-consistent reaction field approach. The role played by inertial and noninertial polarization of this environment is emphasized. Nonequilibrium solvation effects have been estimated. The results show that there are different reaction mechanisms, concerted or stepwise, that may be competitive, depending on the nature of the molecular environment.   © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.   J Comput Chem 19: 1675-1688, 1998
