Description / Table of Contents: Taiwan a typical small Asian country with few energy resources is well known for its high-tech industry in the last 20 years. However as a member of the global village Taiwan feels the responsibility to reduce carbon emissions. The book tells you how Taiwan transforms itself from a high-tech island to become a low carbon island. The book address Taiwan's low-carbon developmental policies of the past 10 years, applies an econometric approach to estimate Taiwan's sector department CO2 emissions, shows how environmental change affects the economic growth of Taiwan, and provides two successful examples of low-carbon pilot regions in Taiwan. Stephen Shen, the Minister of the Environment Protection Agency of Taiwan, believes that the book arrives at the right time, because this is the time to educate the people of Taiwan, about the necessary action for achieving a low carbon society.

Description: Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) is an emerging zoonotic coronavirus. First identified in 2012, MERS-CoV has caused over 2460 infections and a fatality rate of about 35% in humans. Similar to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), MERS-CoV likely originated from bats; however, different from SARS-CoV, which potentially utilized palm civets as its intermediate hosts, MERS-CoV likely transmits to humans through dromedary camels. Animal models, such as humanized mice and nonhuman primates, have been developed for studying MERS-CoV infection. Currently, there are no vaccines and therapeutics approved for the prevention and treatment of MERS-CoV infection, although a number of them have been developed preclinically or tested clinically. This book covers one editorial and 16 articles (including seven review articles and nine original research papers) written by researchers working in the field of MERS-CoV. It describes the following three main aspects: (1) MERS-CoV epidemiology, transmission, and pathogenesis; (2) current progress on MERS-CoV animal models, vaccines, and therapeutics; and (3) challenges and future prospects for MERS-CoV research. Overall, this book will help researchers in the MERS-CoV field to further advance their work on the virus. It also has important implications for other coronaviruses as well as viruses outside the coronavirus family with pandemic potentials.

Notes: Interface microstructure and strain relaxation of atomic-layer-epitaxy-grown CdSe on ZnSe/GaAs〈001〉 was investigated by using transmission electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy techniques. The CdSe epilayer is characterized with fluctuated misorientations along the interface, irregularly distributed stacking faults (SFs), and an array of misfit dislocations (MDs) composed of 60°, Lomer, and partial types. It is found that the fluctuated misorientation is related to the proportion of different 60° MDs and SFs, and this causes the local strain difference. The analysis of MDs is facilitated by using a digital image processing method and allows a clear image of a Lomer MD formed by interaction of two 60° MDs as well as the value of remaining local strains by measuring the density of MDs. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A general expression of electromagnetic turbulent pressure in a plasma of inhomogeneous turbulence is derived from Vlasov's equation using the properties of the spectrum of correlation of two fluctuating parameters. It is found that this pressure consists of two parts. One is the electromagnetic ponderomotive force produced by interaction between the nonresonant particles and the turbulent waves. The other is the direct transfer of momentum from the turbulent waves to the plasma through the interaction between the resonant particles and the waves. Corresponding representations of turbulent pressure for some turbulent oscillation modes (Alfvén waves, magnetohydrodynamic waves, whistlers, ion-acoustic oscillations, and Langmuir waves) are given for a plasma of Maxwellian distribution.

Notes: Weak, low frequency disorder induced Raman scattering is observed in nanocrystalline, "glassy'' carbon having an in-plane correlation length La(approximately-equal-to)30 A(ring). Similar, relatively more intense low frequency scattering is observed after the annealing of amorphous carbon films to 600 °C, suggesting the formation of quite small nanocrystallites of diameters estimated to be in the range of 10–15 A(ring). A comparison with the glassy carbon inelastic neutron scattering spectrum demonstrates that the Raman spectra represent a weighted phonon density of states of low frequency modes. The results confirm theoretically predicted low frequency, disorder induced scattering from nanocrystalline solids.

Notes: Pb(Mg1/3Ta2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3 thin films of single perovskite phase were successfully synthesized by using the RF sputtering deposition technique, followed by post-thermal annealing. While the perovskite structure of Pb(Mg1/3Ta2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3 is rather unstable, phase evolution in the thin films was manipulated by controlling both working pressure during the sputtering process and post-thermal annealing temperature. The desirable perovskite phase was promoted by increasing the working pressure in the range of 10–25 mTorr, followed by thermal annealing at 600°C. The ferroelectric, dielectric, and polarization behaviors of Pb(Mg1/3Ta2/3)0.7Ti0.3O3 films were characterized over a wide range of frequencies. They are strongly affected by the film thickness, where the relative permittivity and remanent polarization increase, while the coercive field decreases with increasing film thickness in the range of 115–360 nm.

Notes: Phylogenetic relationships of commercial Chinese truffles and their allies were investigated mainly by morphological studies and analyses of the sequences of ITS regions of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Two species, Tuber indicum and T. himalayense, closely related to the European T. melanosporum (the Perigord Truffle), are recognized among commercial Chinese black truffles. Both T. pseudohimalayense and T. sinense should be regarded as synonyms of T. indicum. Tuber species producing excavated ascomata are not monophyletic, suggesting that excavation of ascomata may have evolved more than once, or evolved once during the evolution of truffle species and then was lost once during the evolution of Tuber species.

Notes: This article examines the extent to which labour markets are emerging in the Chinese countryside, focusing on nonfarm work, and whether women participate in those new markets. The examination is based on a 1993 survey that provides new detail on types of work, employment channels, migration and income
