    Notes: Surface morphology and structural changes of amorphous (a-), crystalline (c-) SiO2 and MgAl2O4 spinel, implanted with high-current Cu− of 60 keV, were studied using atomic force microscopy. Kinetic variation of the surface morphology was evaluated by changing dose rate from 1 to 100 μA/cm2. In the cases of a-SiO2 and c-SiO2, the surface morphology significantly varied with dose rate: dome-type textures in the lower dose-rate region caused radiation-induced roughening, while net-type ones in the higher region occurred with radiation-induced smoothing. Step-height measurements showed radiation-induced expansion and compaction for c-SiO2 and a-SiO2, respectively. Radiation-induced amorphization is responsible for the expansion processes of c-SiO2. Contrarily, no amorphization was observed in the spinel up to dose rates of about 100 μA/cm2, although radiation-induced swelling, due to defect accumulation, was discernible by the step-height measurement. The surface morphology and the roughness of the spinel were not very dependent on dose rate. The results of c-SiO2 and a-SiO2 indicate that both of them are subjected to enhanced changes in surface morphology and microstructures and that high-current implantation causes highly dynamic states in the near-surface region. On the other hand, the results for the spinel show pronounced stability and that the spinel may be used as an effective substrate for optical modification, even for high-current ion implantation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Because the memory of the bias direction is carried by the antiferromagnetic order in exchange biased films, the stability of the antiferromagnetic order is critical to the existence of the exchange bias field. Ferromagnetic resonance was used to measure the relaxation behavior of polycrystalline CoO films coupled to films of Ni80Fe20, probing the system on the time scale of the experiment, (approximate)103 s, and the time scale of the magnetic precession, (approximate)10−10 s. Unidirectional anisotropy (exchange biasing) and isotropic resonance field shifts are observed at the lowest temperatures. Above the apparent exchange bias blocking temperature, isotropic resonance field shifts persist. At still higher temperatures, diminishing resonance field shifts are accompanied by peaks in the FMR linewidth. The results highlight the effects of varying relaxation rates in the CoO relative to the two experimental time scales. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on a hydrogen barrier necessary for a conventional passivation process of integrated SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT)-based memories. The passivation process significantly degraded electrical properties of the memories, resulting from hydrogen damage in the SBT capacitors. Metallic films (Ti, TiN, and Al) were investigated as a hydrogen barrier during the passivation process. The Ti(〉500 Å) hydrogen barrier only showed the electrical properties of memories free from hydrogen damage. The formation of stable hydrides and the suppressed diffusion of hydrogen through the Ti films during the passivation processes resulted in sufficient switching polarization, low leakage current, and good reliabilities at high temperature. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Routine oxygen consumption (Mo2) was 35% higher in 1 day starved and 21% higher in 4 day starved adult transgenic coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch relative to end of migration ocean-ranched coho salmon. Critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and Mo2 at Ucrit (Mo2max) were significantly lower in 4 day starved transgenic coho salmon (1·25 BL s−1; 8·79 mg O2 kg−1 min−1) compared to ocean-ranched coho salmon (1·60 BL s−1; 9·87 mg O2 kg−1 min−1). Transgenic fish swam energetically less efficiently than ocean-ranched fish, as indicated by a poorer swimming economy at Ucrit (Mo2max〈inlineGraphic alt="inline image" href="urn:x-wiley:00221112:JFB057:JFB_057_mu1" location="equation/JFB_057_mu1.gif"/〉). Although Mo2max was lower in transgenic coho salmon, the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) measured during the first 20 min of recovery was significantly larger in transgenic coho salmon (44·1 mg O2 kg−1) compared with ocean-ranched coho salmon (34·2 mg O2 kg−1), which had a faster rate of recovery.

    Notes: Novel field measurements of critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and oxygen uptake ( Mo2) in three species of adult Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. up to 3·5 kg in body mass were made using two newly designed, mobile Brett-type swim tunnel respirometers sited at a number of field locations in British Columbia, Canada. Measurements of Ucrit, which ranged from 1· 68 to 2·17 body lengths s−1, and maximum Mo2, which ranged from 8·74 to 12·63 mg O2 kg−1 min−1 depending on the species and field location, were judged to be of similar quality when compared with available data for laboratory-based studies. Therefore high quality respirometry studies were possible in the field using adult wild swimming salmonids. In addition, the recovery of wild adult Pacific salmon from the exhaustive Ucrit swim test was sufficiently rapid that swimming performance could be repeated with 〈1 h of recovery time between the termination of the initial swim test and the start of the second test. Moreover, this repeat swimming performance was possible without routine Mo2 being reestablished. This result suggests that wild adult salmon are capable of carrying a moderate excess post-exercise oxygen consumption without adversely affecting Ucrit, maximum Mo2 or swimming economy. Such capabilities may be extremely important for timely migratory passages when salmonids face repetitive hydraulic challenges on their upstream migration.

    Notes: Abstract The viscosities of seven n-alkylamines from n-butylamine to n-decylamine were determined from 15 to 80°C at 5°C intervals. The intrinsic volumes were determined by extrapolation of the plot of fluidity against molar volume to zero fluidity and found to be a linear function of the number of carbon atoms. Plots of the logarithm of viscosity vs. reciprocal absolute temperature were almost linear. The energies of activation for viscous flow for the n-alkylamines were calculated and found to increase with increase in the carbon number. The B values, based on Hildebrand's equation and representing a measure of a molecules resistance to transport of momentum, were calculated for each of the n-alkylamines. A modified form of the equation describing the change fluidity with temperature was then formulated. It is suggested that the activation energy for viscous flow consists of the sum of the energy required for the expansion of the void volume and the energy required to overcome intermolecular interactions. These energies were calculated and discussed.
