    Description: Minor and trace elements can substitute into the crystal lattice of galena at various concentrations. In situ LA-ICP-MS analysis and trace element mapping of a range of galena specimens from different deposit types are used to obtain minor/trace element data, aimed at achieving insight into factors that control minor/trace element partitioning. The previously recognized coupled substitution Ag + +(Bi,Sb) 3+ 2Pb 2+ is confirmed. However, the poorer correlation between Ag and (Bi+Sb) when the latter elements are present at high concentrations (~〉2000 ppm), suggests that site vacancies may come into play: [2(Bi,Sb) 3+ + 3Pb 2+ ]. Galena is the primary host of Tl in all mapped mineral assemblages. Along with Cu, Tl is likely incorporated into galena via the coupled substitution: (Ag,Cu,Tl) + +(Bi,Sb) 3+ 2Pb 2+ . Tin can reach significant concentrations in galena (〉500 ppm). Cd and minor Hg can be incorporated into galena; the simple isovalent substitution (Cd,Hg) 2+ Pb 2+ is inferred. This paper shows for the first time, oscillatory and sector compositional zoning of minor/trace elements (Ag, Sb, Bi, Se, Te, Tl) in galena from two epithermal ores. Zoning is attributed to slow crystal growth into open spaces within the vein at relatively low temperatures. The present data show that galena can host a broader range of elements than previously recognized. For many measured elements, the data sets generated display predictable partitioning patterns between galena and coexisting minerals, which may be dependent on temperature or other factors. Trace element concentrations in galena and their grain-scale distributions may also have potential in the identification of spatial and/or temporal trends within individual metallogenic belts, and as markers of ore formation processes in deposits that have undergone superimposed metamorphism and deformation. Galena trace element geochemistry may also display potential to be used as a trace/minor element vector approach in mineral exploration, notably for recognition of proximal-to-distal trends within a given ore system.

    Description: Effective water management within urban settings requires robust multidisciplinary understanding and an appreciation of the value added to urban spaces by providing multifunctional green-blue spaces. Multifunctional landscapes where ecosystem service provisions are ‘designed-in’ can help ‘transition’ cities to more sustainable environments which are more resilient to changing future conditions. With benefits ranging from the supply of water, habitat and energy to pollutant removal, amenity and opportunities for recreation, urban water bodies can provide a focal point for reconnecting humans and nature in otherwise densely built-up areas. Managing water within urban spaces is an essential infrastructure requirement but has historically been undertaken in isolation from other urban functions and spatial requirements. Increasingly, because of the limits of space and need to respond to new drivers (e.g. mitigation of diffuse pollution), more sustainable approaches to urban water management are being applied which can have multiple functions and benefits. This paper presents a review of ecosystem services associated with water, particularly those in urban environments, and uses the emerging language of ecosystem services to provide a framework for discussion. The range of supporting, provisioning, regulating and cultural ecosystem services associated with differing types of urban water bodies are identified. A matrix is then used to evaluate the results of a series of social, ecological and physical science studies co-located on a single stretch of a restored urban river. Findings identify the benefits of, but also barriers to, the implementation of a transdisciplinary research approach. For many, transdisciplinary research still appears to be on the edge of scientific respectability. In order to approach this challenge, it is imperative that we bring together discipline specific expertise to address fundamental and applied problems in a holistic way. The ecosystem services approach offers an exciting mechanism to support researchers in tackling research questions that require thinking beyond traditional scientific boundaries. The opportunity to fully exploit this approach to collaborative working should not be lost.

    Description: Thyroid hormone (TH) metabolism, mediated by deiodinase types 1, 2, and 3 (D1, D2, and D3) is profoundly affected by acute illness. We examined the role of TH metabolism during ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) in mice. Mice exposed to VILI recapitulated the serum TH findings of acute illness, namely a decrease in 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroid-stimulating hormone and an increase in reverse T3. Both D2 immunoreactivity and D2 enzymatic activity were increased significantly. D1 and D3 activity did not change. Using D2 knockout (D2KO) mice, we determined whether the increase in D2 was an adaptive response. Although similar changes in serum TH levels were observed in D2KO and WT mice, D2KO mice exhibited greater susceptibility to VILI than WT mice, as evidenced by poorer alveoli integrity and quantified by lung chemokine and cytokine mRNA induction. These data suggest that an increase in lung D2 is protective against VILI. Similar findings of increased inflammatory markers were found in hypothyroid WT mice exposed to VILI compared with euthyroid mice, indicating that the lungs were functionally hypothyroid. Treatment of D2KO mice with T3 reversed many of the lung chemokine and cytokine profiles seen in response to VILI, demonstrating a role for T3 in the treatment of lung injury. We conclude that TH metabolism in the lung is linked to the response to inflammatory injury and speculate that D2 exerts its protective effect by making more TH available to the injured lung tissue.

    Description: While several observational investigations have revealed the presence of magnetic fields in the circumstellar envelopes, jets and outflows of post-asymptotic giant branch stars (PAGBs) and planetary nebulae, none has clearly demonstrated their presence at the stellar surface. The lack of information on the strength of the surface magnetic fields prevents us from performing any thorough assessment of their dynamic capability (i.e. material mixing, envelope shaping, etc). We present new high-resolution spectropolarimetric (Stokes V ) observations of a sample of PAGB stars, realized with the instruments ESPaDOnS and Narval, where we searched for the presence of photospheric magnetic fields. Out of the seven targets investigated, the RV Tauri stars U Mon and R Sct display a clear Zeeman signature and return a definite detection after performing a least squares deconvolution analysis. The remaining five PAGBs show no significant detection. We derived longitudinal magnetic fields of 10.2 ± 1.7 G for U Mon and 0.6 ± 0.6 G for R Sct. In both cases, the Stokes profiles point towards an interaction of the magnetic field with the atmosphere dynamics. This first discovery of weak magnetic fields (e.g. ~10 G level) at the stellar surface of PAGB stars opens the door to a better understanding of magnetism in evolved stars.
