Description / Table of Contents: Universities and research institutes are increasingly expected to contribute to society by creating innovation from the returns of their research results and the establishment of new technologies. Toward that goal, Keio University in Japan held an international symposium titled "Fulfilling the Promise of Technology Transfer: Fostering Innovation for the Benefit of Society." From that symposium the following contents are included in the present volume: 1) A showcase of ideas and case studies to promote future creation of innovation by universities and research institutes worldwide, including information on the R&D value chain, licensing, income generation, start-ups and mechanisms to encourage entrepreneurship, and the changing role of universities in fostering innovation. 2) Introduction of active research projects that aim to productize successful research results on an international level. For example, the book includes results of research on stem cell technologies and regenerative medicine as well as the realization and application of polymer photonics and the development of the core technology of polymer photonics. 3) Case studies from the U.K. in developing industry–academia collaboration with various business partners ranging from start-ups and spinout companies to large enterprises. 4) Reports of the achievements of the technological transfer activities at Keio University supported by the 5-year public fund, with suggestions for future prospects

Notes: A confined jet flow involving glass particles was examined to clarify fundamental aspects of the turbulence structure of two-phase flow. Spherical glass particles of mean diameter 62.4 m̈m were loaded in a primary jet at a mass loading ratio of 0.3. The primary jet diameter was 13 mm and exit velocities at the centre line were set at 20 and 30 m/s. The confined pipe diameter was 60 mm and velocities were set at 10 and 15 m/s. The particle and gas flow characteristics, such as local mean velocities, their fluctuations and size distribution, are discussed for three flow conditions which were obtained by changing the velocities of primary and secondary flows.Laser Doppler anemometry was applied to measure the flows of both particles and tracer, discriminated by scattering light intensity, and the precise particle size, for examining the dependence of particle size on the flow, by phase Doppler anemometry. The signal processing of the phase Doppler anemometer was based on a fast Fourier transform method to detect not only Doppler frequency for velocity but also the phase shift of Doppler signals for particle sizing. The processing system consisted of conventional fast analogue to digital converters, multi-digital signal processor units and a host microcomputer.

Notes: The performance of a laser-based optical technique to measure simultaneously the velocity and equivalent diameter of nonsphercial particles was evaluated. The size information was provided by the absolute intensity of diffractively scattered light by a particle crossing a single laser beam, which is concentric with a laser Doppler probe volume. The response curve (size-intensity relationship) of the technique was estimated by calculations using the Fraunhofer approximation. Experiments with spherical glass and polyethylene and non-spherical metal and ceramic particles ranging from 20 to 200 μm confirmed the operation of the technique and in all the measurements the maximum error of the average diameter was 10 μm as compared with size information provided by a microscope.
