Notes: Mobilities of He+, Ne+, Ar+, and Kr+ have been measured in He gas at 4.35 K. An injected-ion drift tube which can be cooled by liquid helium was used. It has a Wien filter on the ion injection line and a quadrupole mass filter on the detection line so that mass identification is explicitly made. Ions are injected into the drift tube with 20 eV, and it is assured that the thermalization of ions is completed well before reaching the gate for mobility measurement. The correction for thermal transpiration in the pressure measurement was made by Takaishi–Sensui's empirical formula. The reduced mobility K was measured against E/N, where E is the electric field strength and N is the gas number density. Then the E/N was converted to the effective temperature Teff by Wannier's formula. The K(Teff) obtained are compared with the previous experimental and theoretical results, some of which are given in K0(Tg), where K0 is the zero field mobility and Tg is the gas temperature. The agreement between the present results and the previous experimental results is generally good at high temperature where they are available. Recommended numerical values are presented. The present work confirms the findings in the preliminary report by Kojima et al. that the K of He+ in He has a maximum around E/N=5 Td which corresponds to Teff=18 K, and it decreases steeply below that temperature. An apprehension that the structure might be caused by clustering is discussed and denied. The maximum found in K of He+ in He is considered to be the structure predicted theoretically as a result of orbiting resonance scattering. The Ks obtained for Ne+, Ar+, and Kr+ have a typical shape of mobilities in heterogeneous gas. They have a maximum around Teff=500–1000 K and become more or less flat below 50 K. From the maximum position the well depths of the interaction potentials are estimated and compared with theoretical calculations. There is a shallow minimum of K between 50 and 100 K for Ar+ and Kr+. The Ks at the flat are a few percent larger than the polarization limit Kpol. Below Teff=6 K, Ks tend to decrease steeply. This steep decrease of K is also suggested to be an orbiting resonance scattering effect although no theoretical calculation is available.

Notes: We have investigated the magnetic properties of (Co1−xFex)–Al–O granular thin films prepared by a reactive sputtering method in an atmosphere of O2+Ar. The coercivity and electrical resistivity of the films are almost independent of x, but with increasing x the anisotropy field decreases linearly and the saturation induction has a broad maximum of 20 kG around x=0.7. The granular films show the same general tendency as bulk Co–Fe alloys in the compositional dependence of magnetostriction (λ). The magnitude of λ varies with increasing annealing temperature. Using a film with x=0.08 as the core of a spiral-wound inductor gave a quality factor Q=25 at a frequency of 300 MHz. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A toroidal electrostatic analyzer with a two-dimensional position-sensitive electron detector has been developed for the measurement of differential excitation cross sections in electron-ion collisions. The electron position is resolved simultaneously in the energy and angular dispersive directions of the analyzer. The present electron analyzer is specially designed with a narrow curved entrance slit and a wide exit slit coupled with an exit lens system after the toroidal deflector, which can give a wide energy dispersed range of 20% of the mean pass energy and a large angular range extending from 30° to 120°. The performance of the spectrometer has been studied by measuring the scattered electrons from Ar atoms and from a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface, indicating the usefulness of the present analyzer in electron spectroscopy. A brief description of the method for a spectrum transformation from Cartesian coordinates to polar coordinates is also presented. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new selected ion drift tube mass spectrometer, which has been developed for ion swarm experiments at very low temperature, is presented. Gas temperature of 2 K in the drift tube as the lowest one for this apparatus is achieved by liquid helium cooling. Details of techniques in the low temperature experiment, which are concerned in the development of this apparatus, is discussed. Preliminary experiments have been carried out in measurements of drift velocity of He+ ions in He gas at 4.3 and 2 K. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Nonthermodynamical garnet Bi3Fe5O12 was synthesized by direct epitaxial growth via vapor phase using a reactive ion beam sputtering technique. The lattice constant was 12.631 A(ring). The saturation magnetization of the film grown onto a substrate (a=12.495 A(ring)) was 1500 G at room temperature. The uniaxial anisotropy energy was +7.2×104 erg/cm3. The conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy measurement indicates that the internal fields of 24d and 16a sites in the nearly lattice-matched film were 420 and 490 kOe, respectively. The internal field of the 24d site was larger by 30 kOe than that in YIG. The angle between the direction of the internal field and the film normal was 34.8°.

Notes: Resistive measurements for the angular dependence of both Bc2 and Jc were performed using high-Jc Y1Ba2Cu3O7−δ films prepared by chemical vapor deposition. The angular dependence of Bc2 was described by the anisotropic Ginsburg-Landau theory with different masses for in-plane and out-of-plane. We found that the angular dependence of Bc2 largely contributes to the anisotropic Jc on the basis of the flux pinning scaling law.

Notes: Instantaneous chirality induced by zero-point vibrations was observed directly by using the Coulomb explosion imaging (CEI) technique. The present results suggest the CEI would be generally applicable to diagnosis of the chirality of the isolated molecules in gas phase. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A method is described to convert a two-dimensional image, which is the pattern of the scattered electrons from on target gas measured by a torodial type analyzer with a detector consists of a pair of multichannel plates and a position sensitive detector from detector's recording system, a Cartesian coordinate system, to a polar coordinate system in which physical quantities (the energy and angle of a scattered electron) are expressed. By this method, the converting coefficients are calculated with high precision and the kernel (nonzero) coefficients are stored for data conversion on disk. Since there is symmetry in the coefficients, only part of the coefficients need to be calculated and stored. A simple method for compressing the storage space of the coefficients also is described. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High Tc superconducting YBa2 Cu3 O7−x films were prepared by chemical vapor deposition using β-diketonates of Y, Ba, and Cu as source materials. The films were epitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (100) substrates. The c-axis orientation perpendicular to the plane of the substrates was observed. A sharp resistive superconducting transition with Tc (R=0) at 84 K was obtained. The maximum critical-current density at 77 K was 2×104 A/cm2 .
