    Description: The Matawai Maroon Johannes King (ca. 1830-1898) taught himself to read and write at an advanced age. He wanted to bridge the gap between the generations by publishing his Book of Horrors (Skrekiboekoe) and the present book which has been given the title Life at Marispaston. King wanted to explain the root of the problems between him and his elder brother, Chief Noah Andrai, representatives respectively of the church and the state at the village level. King wanted to justify his life in the eyes of the church, the EBG-Moravian Brethren, and his fellow Maroons. This book is an important contribution to the church history of Suriname, yet also offers insights into the history of the Maroon communities in Suriname. This book is one of the first original works in Sranantongo.

    Description: The experience from CO2 injection at pilot projects (Frio, Ketzin, Nagaoka, US Regional Partnerships) and existing commercial operations (Sleipner, Snøhvit, In Salah, acid-gas injection) demonstrates that CO2 geological storage in saline aquifers is technologically feasible. Monitoring and verification technologies have been tested and demonstrated to detect and track the CO2 plume in different subsurface geological environments. By the end of 2008, approximately 20 Mt of CO2 had been successfully injected into saline aquifers by existing operations. Currently, the highest injection rate and total storage volume for a single storage operation are approximately 1 Mt CO2/year and 25 Mt, respectively. If carbon capture and storage (CCS) is to be an effective option for decreasing greenhouse gas emissions, commercial-scale storage operations will require orders of magnitude larger storage capacity than accessed by the existing sites. As a result, new demonstration projects will need to develop and test injection strategies that consider multiple injection wells and the optimisation of the usage of storage space. To accelerate large-scale CCS deployment, demonstration projects should be selected that can be readily employed for commercial use; i.e. projects that fully integrate the capture, transport and storage processes at an industrial emissions source.

    Description: Analyses of extractable organic matter from selected core samples obtained at DSDP Site 535 in the eastern Gulf of Mexico show that the asphalt (or tar) and adjacent oil stains in Lower Cretaceous fractured limestones have a common origin and are not derived from the surrounding organic-matter-rich limestones. Organic matter indigenous to those surrounding limestones was shown to be thermally immature and incapable of yielding the hydrocarbon mixture discovered. In contrast, the oil-stained and asphaltic material appears to be a post-migration alteration product of a mature oil that has migrated from source rocks deeper in the section, or from stratigraphically equivalent but compositionally different source-facies down-dip from the drill site. Further, hydrocarbons of the altered petroleum residues were shown to be similar to Sunniland-type oils found in Lower Cretaceous rocks of South Florida. The results suggest that shallowwater, platform-type source-rock facies similar to those that generated Sunniland-type oils, or deeper-water facies having comparable oil-generating material, are present in this deep-water (〉 3000 m) environment. These findings have important implications for the petroleum potential in the eastern Gulf of Mexico and for certain types of deep-sea sediments.

    Description: Long term air and snowfall chemistry measurements have beenperformed at the three coastal Antarctic stations Dumont dÚrville(66°40ŽS, 140°1ŽE), Neumayer (70°39ŽS, 8°15ŽW), and Halley(75°35ŽS, 26°19ŽW). The results have to be interpreted andcompared with respect to the regional meteorological conditions.In this study the 3-hourly synoptic surface observations taken at thethree stations between 1991 and 1995, as well as the dailyupper air soundings from 1993, are analyzed to describe theaspects of station climatologies relevant for the air and snowfall chemistrymeasurements discussed in the papers of this special section. Although the threestations are comparable, being situated close to the coastline of Antarctica, themeteorological conditions differ. While at Dumont dŽUrville katabatic winds causeprediminant strong and relatively dry surface winds from the interior of Antarctica,Neumayer and Halley are frequently influenced by easterly winds associated mostlywith eastwardmoving cyclones. From April through October the wind field above 5 km isgoverned by a circumpolar vortex with westerly winds increasing with height.Dumont dÚrville represents a station at the edge of this vortexwith extreme stratospheric wind velocities above 50 m/s. Neumayer and Halley aremostly situated within the vortex and isolated from airmasses advecting fromlower latitudes into the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere during theAustral winter.

    Description: The Cenozoic history (0 to 65 million years, Myr, ago) of the Arctic Ocean is largely unknown from direct evidence. Here we present the first Cenozoic palaeoceanographic record constructed from 〉 400 m of core from a recent drilling expedition to the Lomonosov Ridge. Our record shows a palaeoenvironmental transition from a warm greenhouse world, of the latest Palaeocene and early Eocene, to an icehouse world influenced by sea ice and icebergs from the middle Eocene to the present. We show: 1-2 cm per thousand years (ka) sedimentation rates occurred from the middle Miocene - Holocene (~18-0 Myr) in stark contrast to rates proposed in earlier studies; the first occurrence of ice-rafted debris (IRD) is in the middle Eocene (~45 Myr), ~35 Myr earlier than previously thought; prior to the IRD, fresh surface waters were present at ~49 Myr; and warm surface waters, ~10° warmer than previous estimates, occurred during the Palaeocene Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM). The revised timing of Arctic cooling events coincides with those from Antarctica, supporting arguments for bi-polar symmetry in climate change.

    Description: Estimates of long-term sedimentation rates derived from total sediment thickness and bedrock ages based on current tectonic models consistently yield cm/ka-scale average sedimentation rates in the central Arctic Ocean, including the Lomonosov Ridge. The physiographic setting of the Arctic Basin is that of a small basin surrounded by huge landmasses since its initial opening during Early Cretaceous times, a setting that has contributed to yield 2-6 km thick sediment deposits on Arctic's abyssal plains. This sedimentation rate scenario is contrasting to the long-held belief that central Arctic Plio-Pleistocene sedimentation rates have been on the mm/ka-scale, or even sub-mm/ka-scale, as estimated from numerous short gravity or piston cores. ACEX drilled through a nearly 410 m thick latest Paleocene to Recent sediment section on the Lomonosov Ridge near 88°N at about 1200 m water depth, with a recovery of 68 %. A combination of paleomagnetic, biostratigraphic and 10-Be data derived from the ACEX cores finally solved the Arctic Basin sedimentation rate ambiguity, in showing an average middle Miocene to Recent rate of about 1.3 cm/ka and Pleistocene rates of nearly 2 cm/ka. The ACEX record is interrupted by a hiatus encompassing the interval between about 17 Ma and 43 Ma. Average middle Eocene through latest Paleocene rates are on the order of about 1.5 cm/ka.
