Notes: Octahedral cations of Mg and Ta in Pb[(Mg1/3Ta2/3)0.8Ti0.2]O3 were replaced independently as well as simultaneously by Zn and Nb, respectively, to investigate the effects of composition modification on phase formation and dielectric properties. When Mg was replaced by Zn, the perovskite formation yields decreased continuously to 0% with the Zn fraction. In contrast, nearly phase-pure perovskite powders could be prepared when Ta and the Mg-Ta complex were replaced by Nb and Zn-Nb, respectively. Dielectric relaxation with diffuse phase transition was observed at most of the compositions. Dielectric maximum temperatures increased steadily with the substituent fractions, whereas variations of the maximum dielectric constant were dependent heavily on the substituent species.

Notes: Effects of Pb(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O3 and Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 substitution in the Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 ceramic system on structure formation, crystallographic aspects, and dielectric properties are discussed. Developed phases in the B-site precursor and perovskite systems were studied by X-ray diffraction. Crystal symmetries and dimensions of the perovskite unit cell of the two systems are compared. Changing rates of the lattice parameter with substituent PbTiO3 concentration in the two modified systems are virtually identical to that of the unmodified Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 system. Weak-field low-frequency dielectric responses of the ceramics were investigated. The dielectric maximum temperatures of the two perovskite systems shifted almost linearly with compositional change. Dielectric constant spectra at low concentrations of PbTiO3 exhibited typical diffuse phase transition behavior, whereas those at high PbTiO3 concentrations were rather sharp. The phase transition modes reflected on the dielectric spectra were quantitatively analyzed in terms of diffuseness parameters.

Notes: Pb[Mg1/3Nb2/3]O3 was gradually substituted by Bi[Mg2/3Nb1/3]O3 (BiMN) up to 30 mol%, with an overall modification by a constant fraction of PbTiO3 (10 mol%). Monophasic perovskite powders could be prepared via the B-site precursor route. Ceramic samples of the system showed a typical relaxor behavior of frequency-dependent dielectric dispersion. Values of the maximum dielectric constant decreased substantially with increasing BiMN concentration, whereas corresponding temperatures changed only moderately.

Notes: Perovskite developments in the Pb(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O3–PbTiO3 system were explored. Formation yields and lattice parameters of the perovskite were determined from X-ray diffractometry results. Weak-field low-frequency dielectric properties of the system ceramics were investigated, followed by microstructure examination. Perovskite started to develop in Pb(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O3 after the introduction of 30 mol% PbTiO3, whereas complete stabilization was accomplished at 60% substitution. Dielectric relaxation behavior was not substantial across the entire composition range, whereas phase transition modes changed from diffuse to sharp with increased PbTiO3 fraction.

Notes: Perovskite-phase developments in partially/fully substituted (Ba,Pb)(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3, synthesized via B-site precursor routes, were investigated. The pyrochlore structure, present at no barium content, was immediately replaced by perovskite with a small amount (≥8 at.%) of barium substitution. Variations in the lattice parameters of the pyrochlore and perovskite structures were studied. The weak-field radio-frequency dielectric constants and losses of the system ceramics were examined. A highest maximum dielectric constant of 9000 (76°C, 1 MHz) was observed at 8 at.% barium substitution. The dielectric-constant spectra were analyzed further in terms of diffuseness characteristics (e.g., diffuseness exponent and degree of diffuseness). The dielectric hysteresis loops of the ceramics were measured. The microstructures of the sintered ceramics also were observed.

Notes: Abstract Kinetic data analyses on the crystallization behaviour of amorphous lead iron tungstate (PFW) were carried out. A low value of the glass transition/melting point ratio (0.52) and a high value of the frequency factor (2 × 1037 s−1) of the first crystallization exotherm may indicate a high degree of metastability of the prepared PFW in the amorphous state. The Avrami exponent was determined to be ∼ 3.0, which suggests a bulk nucleation. The activation energy for crystallization was averaged to be 520 kJ mol−1 for the first exotherm. The validity of the estimated values of the Avrami exponent and the activation energy were confirmed by comparing with an independently obtained product of the two parameters.

Notes: Abstract (Fe $$Pb[(Fe_{2/3} W_{1/3} )_{0.8 - x} (Mg_{1/3} Nb_{2/3} )_{0.2} (Fe_{1/2} Nb_{1/2} )_x ]O_3 $$ system perovskite powders (phase purity 〉99%) were prepared via B-site precursor routes. Lattice parameter changes were analyzed in terms of B-site cation stoichiometries and sizes. Weak-field radio-frequency dielectric characteristics were investigated to verify the effect of composition modification on Curie temperatures and maximum dielectric constants. Unusual relaxation behaviors of frequency dispersion in the dielectric constant spectra at paraelectric region were observed.

Notes: Abstract Stabilization of a perovskite structure was attempted by replacing Mg for Zn in Pb(Zn1/3Ta2/3)O3. System powders were prepared using a B-site precursor method by reacting PbO with separately-prepared precursor compositions. Effects of the substituent Mg concentration on perovskite phase developments and subsequent changes in dielectric properties were investigated, as a function of measurement frequency. Phase transition modes reflected in the dielectric constant spectra were analyzed in terms of diffuseness exponent and degree of diffuseness. Internal microstructures of the ceramics were examined, and correlations with perovskite phase contents and dielectric properties are discussed.

Notes: Abstract PbTiO3 thin films were prepared by spin coating of untreated and sonicated sol (from Pb-Ti stock solution) on Si substrates. The films were fired at different temperatures and were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. Dried gel and thin films prepared through the two different processing routes were compared in terms of phase developments, microstructures, and dielectric properties. Films prepared from the sonicated sol were found to be superior than those from the untreated sol.

Notes: Abstract Powders in the Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3 system, with a high perovskite yield, were prepared by a B-site precursor method. PbO was added to pre-reacted B-site components of Mg1-xZnxNb2O6 solid solution, which was further calcined to form a perovskite structure. Perovskite phase contents and lattice parameters were obtained from X-ray analyses. Weak-field low-frequency dielectric constants and losses of sintered pellets were measured as functions of composition, temperature and frequency. Dielectric relaxation behaviours were investigated in terms of diffuseness coefficients. Microstructures were observed to correlate with other characteristics. © 1998 Chapman & Hall
