    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉Regional assessments of the wind erosion risk are rare and vary due to the methods used and the available data to be included. The adaptation of existing methods has the advantage that the results can be compared directly. We adopted an already successfully applied methodology (ILSWE—applied in East Africa), to investigate the spatiotemporal variability of the wind erosion risk between 2005 and 2019 in Southern Africa. The approach integrates climatic variables, a vegetation index, and soil properties to describe the potential impact of wind erosion at the landscape scale. The annual and seasonal variability is determined by the vegetation cover, whereas droughts and strong El Niño events had only regional effects. We estimated that 8.3% of the study area experiences a moderate to elevated wind erosion risk over the 15‐year period with annual and inter‐annual fluctuations showing a slight upward trend. In general, the desert and drylands in the west have the highest proportion of risk areas, the moist forests in the east are characterized by a very low risk of wind erosion, while the grasslands, shrublands, and croplands in the interior most likely react to changes of climatic conditions. The validation process is based on a comparison with the estimated frequency of dust storms derived from the aerosol optical depth and angstrom exponent and revealed an overall accuracy of 65%. The results of this study identify regions and yearly periods prone to wind erosion to prioritize for further analysis and conservation policies for mitigation and adaptation strategies.〈/p〉

    Notes: The process of hydrogen-induced amorphization of the equilibrium intermetallic compound Zr3Al is compared to ion-irradiation-induced amorphization of the same compound. In contrast to ion irradiation, where almost complete chemical disordering precedes the onset of amorphization, hydrogenation of Zr3Al causes no appreciable change in long-range order prior to amorphization. Electron microscopy reveals apparent homogeneous nucleation of the amorphous phase, and striking similarities to martensitic microstructures. The maximum lattice dilation observed prior to amorphization by hydrogen absorption is identical to that found during irradiation, indicating that lattice expansion is a common measure of the crystal instability induced by different solid-state processing techniques.

    Notes: Hydrogen-induced phase transformations of the equilibrium intermetallic compound Zr3 Al have been studied by in situ elastic neutron scattering, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). TEM observations reveal two distinct modes of amorphous phase formation in Zr3 Al upon hydrogenation, namely, heterogeneous nucleation at preexisting grain boundaries, and homogeneous nucleation within single-crystal grains. In situ neutron diffraction reveals a phase separation between a hydrogen (deuterium) poor and a hydrogen (deuterium) rich crystalline phase. Rietveld profile refinement of the neutron diffraction data indicates predominant hydrogen (deuterium) occupation of the octahedral interstitial sites in the crystalline matrix that have only Zr nearest-neighbor atoms. The two different modes of amorphous phase nucleation are directly related to the degree of hydrogen dissolution in the host crystalline matrix.

    Notes: Sullivan suggests that the alternative audit approaches adopted by accounting firms be expressed in terms of "structure" and "judgement", with a division provided by the degree to which auditor judgement is replaced by structured quantitative algorithms. Cushing and Loebbecke attempt to operationalise this division by examining the guidance provided to practising auditors by their firms. Kinne extends this study by classifying accounting firms as "structured", "intermediate" or "unstructured" in terms of their audit methodologies. Provides a test of Kinney's classification by examining the tolerance of accounting firms to accounting policy choices which have an income effect in their clients' financial statements. Argues that those firms with a structured audit approach will manage audit risk through a greater reliance on mechanistic procedures, resulting in a greater tolerance of income manipulation. The results are confirmatory for the period under study, but evidence is provided to suggest that audit firms have subsequently become less diversified in their approach.
