Notes: The library at Sunshine Coast University, Queensland was completed three years ago. The library is both the physical heart and the social focus of the new campus. Two firms of architects collaborated on the design: one, Lawrence Nield & Partners, with extensive experience of major projects and the other, John Mainwaring & Associates, familiar with the local climate. The low budget encouraged innovatory construction. The building is of interest for its visual openness, its suitability for the subtropical climate and the extensive use of timber for cladding and screening.

Notes: Australian Architecture schools, like their UK equivalents, have also been grappling with the need to obtain recognition for design as equivalent to research. They have had to tackle the subject not because of pressures imposed by a national funding system, as in the United Kingdom, but because of the need to maintain credibility within their universities. Michael Keniger looks back over a 10 year period of experiment.

Notes: This paper presents an account of the quality management system designed and adopted using a project alliance approach on the National Museum of Australia project. We discuss the integration of the selection criteria and performance measures and how these were used to provided a risk and reward structure that provided the incentive for a high level of achievement of the projects' goals. Interestingly, the organisational structure of the project alliance provided a cross-team relationship outcome that sealed the quality culture observed on this project. This culture drove high levels of quality and was also observed to appeal to intrinsic motivation to deliver best-for-project outcomes.
