    Notes: Abstract This paper describes the theory and implementation ofBabel, a system which explores the hypothesis that much of the differences in the world's languages may be characterized by the inventory and properties of the lexical items and functional categories of those languages. The structure ofBabel assumes that functional categories are originally lacking in a child's syntax, and are acquired through a statistical induction process of lexical acquisition.Babel then uses information induced from the structure of the lexicon to create a model of syntax via a deductive, rule-based process. This model makes a number of predictions about the time course of language acquisition. These predictions are tested by runningBabel as a simulation of child language acquisition, using large samples of adult speech to children as input. The simulation results are shown to highly correlate to longitudinal studies of child language acquisition in English and Polish. Finally, the approach to handling noisy data withBabel is detailed.

    Notes: Abstract Software architecture analysis is a cost‐effective means of controlling risk and maintaining system quality throughout the processes of software design, development and maintenance. This paper presents a sequence of steps that maps architectural quality goals into scenarios that measure the goals, mechanisms that realize the scenarios and analytic models that measure the results. This mapping ensures that design decisions and their rationale are documented in such a fashion that they can be systematically explored, varied, and potentially traded off against each other. As systems evolve, the analytic models can be used to assess the impact of architectural changes, relative to the system's changing quality goals. Although scenarios have been extensively used in software design to understand the ways in which a system meets its operational requirements, there has been little systematic use of scenarios to support analysis, particularly analysis of a software architecture's quality attributes: modifiability, portability, extensibility, security, availability, and so forth. In this paper we present a unified approach to using scenarios to support both the design, analysis and maintenance of software architectures, and examples from large‐scale software development projects where we have applied the approach. We also present a tool, called Brie, that aids in: scenario capture, mapping scenarios to software architectures, and the association of analytic models with particular portions of architectures. The approach that we have devised, and that Brie supports, is a foundation for a discipline of architectural engineering. Architectural engineering is an iterative method of design, analysis and maintenance where design decisions are motivated by scenarios, and are supported by documented analyses.

    Notes: Abstract Because a system's software architecture strongly influences its quality attributes such as modifiability, performance, and security, it is important to analyze and reason about that architecture. However, architectural documentation frequently does not exist, and when it does, it is often “out of sync” with the implemented system. In addition, it is rare that software development begins with a clean slate; systems are almost always constrained by existing legacy code. As a consequence, we need to be able to extract information from existing system implementations and utilize this information for architectural reasoning. This paper presents Dali, an open, lightweight workbench that aids an analyst in extracting, manipulating, and interpreting architectural information. By assisting in the reconstruction of architectures from extracted information, Dali helps an analyst redocument architectures, discover the relationship between “as-implemented” and “as-designed” architectures, analyze architectural quality attributes and plan for architectural change.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper we describe a process for evaluating the architectures of large, complex software-intensive systems. This process involves both social and technical aspects. The social aspects deal with planning and running an evaluation. The technical aspects concentrate on the representation of architectural information, standard questions, analyses, and quality attribute characterizations. We then take the generic notion of architectural evaluation, and discuss some techniques for applying this technique to the domain of real-time systems.
