Description: Headwaters make up a large part of the global stream length. They are also especially sensitive to droughts, which affect the stream's water balance, chemistry, and ecology. Climate change scenarios predict an increasing frequency of extreme weather events. For streams, rivers, and their catchments, this implies a higher intensity and frequency of severer droughts and floods. It is likely that during drought streams depend to a significant extent on groundwater to maintain flow. This study contributes to ongoing research on the effects of drought on headwater catchments and the role of groundwater in the water balance of these systems. Monthly Radon (222Rn) measurements combined with mass balance calculations were used to quantify the spatial and temporal variability of groundwater influx to the Mähringsbach, a headwater catchment in northern Bavaria, Germany. Sampling was conducted in 2019 and 2020, a multi-year drought period, with 2019 being the seventh driest year since the start of records. Thus measurements covered a broad range of flow regimes (0.04 m3 s−1 to ~ 3 m3 s−1). 222Rn activities ranged between ~500 Bq m−3 and ~8,500 Bq m−3 in the headwater, while further downstream, the activities and variability in activities were lower (~500 Bq m−3 to ~2,000 Bq m−3). Results from the 222Rn mass balance showed that in the headwater reaches, the proportion of groundwater varied between 10 and 70 %, while further downstream, it ranged between only 0 and 30%. There was a clear negative correlation between river discharge and the proportion of groundwater inflow to the stream. Less than 10% of the total discharge was derived from groundwater during high flow conditions, while under low flow in the headwater reaches, it increased to 70%. We conclude that aquatic ecosystems in headwaters become increasingly dependent on groundwater during drought periods as a source of water. This dependency will increase in the summer months given current climate predictions. This knowledge should be used to develop, refine, and apply management strategies for streams and the important habitats located in stream sediments (hyporheic zone) under a changing climate.

Description: Raised bog forests cover more than 50% of the of the not cultivated bog area ofthe prealpine bog region. 568 sites in 391 bogs are allocated to 13 raised bog forest types (defined by vegetation composition and structure) and differentiated in the precipitation gradient from 1730 to 815 mm/a. Animals (mainly invertebrates) where allocated to the different bog forest types. An exemplary table shows the great importance of a broad variety of forest types to maintain biodiversity of, unfortunately not well explored, animal groups. The hydrological importance of raised bog border forests is highlighted by the stabilisation of the akrotelm of the open raised bog plain, this is quantified by the development of the Feßlerfilz test site between 1969 and 2015. To get a better understanding of the water retention in bog forests, the decomposition degrees after VON POST (1924) are allocated with the hydraulic connectivity measured in undisturbed peat cores in the laboratory. The simulation of the development of the site in two scenarios of global climate change indicates that in a dry scenario only very few raised bogs directly at the alpine fringe remain stable. In the dry belt, heather forests should get in the focus. In the whole gradient oligotrophic basins of former peat cuts are sanctuaries for wet raised bog communities and their allocated species. The control of nutrient input is essential for their maintenance.

Description: Abstract: From 1958 to 1978 a bog research station was operated in the raised bogs near Lake Chiemsee in southern Bavaria (Bernau, Chiemseemoore). The station recorded daily data of the precipitation, evaporation and evapotranspiration (full program see SCHMEIDL et al. 1970). In this time, computing power was not sufficient to handle such large data volumes, so only aggregated data were published. The original data (12 files) were analyzed and plotted. The hydrologic balance model was adopted to the acrotelm. The waterlevel in the Sphagnum growing complex and the surface runoff of the saturated acrotelm was modelled with the original daily values of 10 growing periods. Model results indicate, that in 2575 modelled days only 93 days and 12 periods, only one period lasting longer than 5 days, with a critical water table (-20 cm) occurred (1958 to 1968). The model results were validated with runoff measurements. The vegetation development from 1961 to 2015 confirms the stability of the growing complex and the regeneration potential within the climatic borders. (1400 mm/a). The results allow a better understanding of the capillary system of the acrotelm and of the regeneration success of raised bogs.
