Notes: A deliberative method for ranking risks was evaluated in a study involving 218 risk managers. Both holistic and multiattribute procedures were used to assess individual and group rankings of health and safety risks facing students at a fictitious middle school. Consistency between the rankings that emerged from these two procedures was reasonably high for individuals and for groups, suggesting that these procedures capture an underlying construct of riskiness. Participants reported high levels of satisfaction with their groups’ decision-making processes and the resulting rankings, and these reports were corroborated by regression analyses. Risk rankings were similar across individuals and groups, even though individuals and groups did not always agree on the relative importance of risk attributes. Lower consistency between the risk rankings from the holistic and multiattribute procedures and lower agreement among individuals and groups regarding these rankings were observed for a set of high-variance risks. Nonetheless, the generally high levels of consistency, satisfaction, and agreement suggest that this deliberative method is capable of producing risk rankings that can serve as informative inputs to public risk-management decision making.

Notes: Risk ranking offers a potentially powerful means for gathering public input to help set risk-management priorities. In most rankings conducted to date, the categories and attributes used to describe the risks have varied widely, the materials and procedures have not been designed to facilitate comparisons among risks on all important attributes, and the validity and reproducibility of the resulting rankings have not been assessed. To address these needs, a risk-ranking method was developed in which risk experts define and categorize the risks to be ranked, identify the relevant risk attributes, and characterize the risks in a set of standardized risk summary sheets, which are then used by lay or other groups in structured ranking exercises. To evaluate this method, a test bed involving 22 health and safety risks in a fictitious middle school was created. This article provides an overview of the risk-ranking method and describes the challenges faced in designing the middle school test bed. A companion article in this issue reports on the validity of the ranking procedures and the level of agreement among risk managers regarding ranking of risks and attributes.

Notes: [Auszug] Genes and mechanisms involved in common complex diseases, such as the autoimmune disorders that affect approximately 5% of the population, remain obscure. Here we identify polymorphisms of the cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 gene (CTLA4)—which encodes a vital negative regulatory molecule of ...

Notes: Symmetrized multipole formalism, in diffraction studies of orientationally disordered molecular crystals, is generalized to include coupling between orientations and translations of a rigid body and anharmonicity in the center-of-mass motion. This generalized formalism is intended for use with direct multipole analysis of the observed form factors. In the relationships between the radial multipole coefficients of the dynamic and static density, correlations cause a mixing in the multipole order. In the dynamic form factor the parameters describing the coupling are linear combinations of the multipole expansion coefficients of the corresponding rigid-body distribution. Parameters describing anisotropy are directly the multipole expansion coefficients of the rigid-body center-of-mass distribution. As an example of the formalism, neutron diffraction data from cubic KCN, NaCN, KOD, NaOD and CBr4 and rhombohedral RbNO3 are reanalyzed with direct multipole analysis. In these examples the importance of coupling seems to grow with the complexity of the crystal.

Notes: A rigorous treatment of the constraints imposed by site and body symmetry on the orientational distribution of librating molecules is presented in terms of multipole expansions. Radial densities of the site-symmetric dynamic multipole expansion are linear combinations of the radial densities of the body-symmetric static multipole expansion of the same multipole order. The transformation from static to dynamic radial densities is transmitted by libration matrices, which can be included as parameters in a structure factor model. The matrix elements are connected to the rotational dynamics of the molecule. They are expansion coefficients of the orientational distribution in a basis obtained by site and body symmetrization of the real Wigner functions. Both symmetrizations are reduced to selecting terms from a general basis according to simple index rules. Independence of the kind of density function and Fourier invariance make the formalism useful in combined neutron and X-ray diffraction studies.

Notes: Abstract This paper reviews a project conducted as part of a general chemistry course. The primary goal of the assignment was to involve our students in the process of teaching chemistry. Our work is part of STEMTEC, the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Teacher Education Collaborative, which has been developed to improve the preparation of preservice teachers, stimulate the interest of undergraduate science and mathematics majors in the teaching profession, and increase the educational effectiveness of science and mathematics courses. The assigned project required students to create an interactive computer module that could be used to educate other students about concepts taught in general chemistry. The paper includes examples of these modules and evaluates this method of instruction. The software programs designed by the students are available for download from the Internet (http://soulcatcher.chem.umass.edu).

Notes: Abstract We describe in this paper a set of computer-based simulations for use in general chemistry courses. We detail a discovery-based method of teaching, whereby students are led to discover concepts through guided-inquiry use of the simulation modules. Three methods of using the software are described, as is the development process we have employed. Finally, we describe our evaluation studies of the effects of our methodology and the use of a scientific reasoning instrument. The software is available free for download as part of this article.

Notes: Abstract Neutral lipids, glycolipids, phospholipids, pigments, and essential oil of the above-ground part ofOriganum onites L. (Lamiaceae) are isolated and characterized for the first time. The fatty-acid composition of the lipids and the components of the hydrocarbons, sterols, and essential oil are determined by GC/MS. Linolenic and palmitic acids dominate in the acids of the lipids. The main components of the hydrocarbons are nonacosane; of the sterols, \-sitosterol; of the pigments, chlorophylls a and b. A total of 54 components are identified in the essential oil.
