    Notes: Host–parasitoid systems with evolving mutation rates are studied. By increasing the growth rate of hosts, the diversity of both species is maintained dynamically. For the lower growth rate, diversity is brought about by mere parasitism. The average mutation rate for parasites is elevated to a high value, while that for hosts is suppressed at a low level. For the higher growth rate, the mutation rates for both hosts and parasites are elevated to form a symbiotic cluster connected by on-going mutation. This symbiotic state is sustained through a chaotic oscillation keeping some coherency among species. For a flat landscape for hosts, dynamical clustering of oscillation is observed. Lyapunov spectra of such oscillations show that high dimensional chaos with small positive exponents underlies in the symbiotic state. This weak high dimensional chaos, termed "homeochaos,'' is essential to the maintenance of symbiosis in ecosystems.

    Notes: Abstract A dynamic model for cell differentiation, where cells with internal chemical reaction dynamics interact with each other and replicate was studied. It led to spontaneous differentiation of cells and determination, as discussed in the isologous diversification. The following features of the differentiation were obtained: (1) hierarchical differentiation from a ’stem’ cell to other cell types, with the emergence of the interaction-dependent rules for differentiation; (2) global stability of an ensemble of cells consisting of several cell types, that were sustained by the emergent, autonomous control on the rate of differentiation; (3) existence of several cell colonies with different cell-type distributions. The results provide a novel viewpoint on the origin of a complex cell society, while relevance to some biological problems, especially to the hemopoietic system, is also discussed.

    Notes: Abstract An isologous diversification theory for cell differentiation is proposed, based on simulations of interacting cells with biochemical networks and the cell division process following consumption of some chemicals. According to the simulations of the interaction-based dynamical systems model, the following scenario of the cell differentiation is proposed. (1) Up to some threshold number, divisions bring about almost identical cells with synchronized biochemical oscillations. (2) As the number is increased, the oscillations lose synchrony, leading to groups of cells with different phases of oscilaations. (3) Amplitudes of oscillation and averaged chemical compositions start to differ by groups of cells. The differentiated behavior of states is transmitted to daughter cells. (4) Recursivity is formed so that the daughter cells keep the identical chemical character. This “memory” is made possible through the transfer of initial conditions. (5) Successive differentiation proceeds. The mechanism of tumor cell formation, origin of stem cells, anomalous differentiation by transplantations, apoptosis and other features of cell differentiation process are also discussed, with some novel predictions.

    Notes: Abstract Low-dimensional chaotic dynamical systems can exhibit many characteristic properties of stochastic systems, such as broad Fourier spectra. They are distinguishable from stochastic processes through finite values for their dimension, Lyapunov exponents, and Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. We discuss how these characteristic observables are modified in spatiotemporal chaotic systems like. coupled map lattices. We analyze with the help of Lyapunov concepts how the stochastic limit is approached and how these properties can be observed directly through local dimension measurements from reconstructed time series. Finally, we discuss the interaction of spatiotemporal attractors with external noise and possible connections to problems of pattern selection and stability.

    Description: The family unit and kinship structures form the basis of social relationships in indigenous societies. Families constitute a cultural group, a so-called clan, within which marriage is prohibited by the incest taboo. The clan attribution governs the mating preference and descent relationships by certain rules. Such rules form various kinship structures, including generalized exchange, an indirect exchange of brides among more than two clans, and restricted exchange, a direct exchange of brides with the flow of children to different clans. These structures are distributed in different areas and show different cultural consequences. However, it is still unknown how they emerge or what conditions determine different structures. Here, we build a model of communities consisting of lineages and family groups and introduce social cooperation among kin and mates and conflict over mating. Each lineage has parameters characterizing the trait and mate preference, which determines the possibility of marriage and the degree of cooperation and conflict among lineages. Lineages can cooperate with those having similar traits to their own or mates’, whereas lineages with similar preferences compete for brides. In addition, we introduce community-level selection by eliminating communities with smaller fitness and follow the so-called hierarchical Moran process. We numerically demonstrate that lineages are clustered in the space of traits and preferences, resulting in the emergence of clans with the incest taboo. Generalized exchange emerges when cooperation is strongly needed, whereas restricted exchange emerges when the mating conflict is strict. This may explain the geographical distribution of kinship structures in indigenous societies.
