Notes: The Cagniard method of interpreting geoelectrical sounding data is based on the use of an empirical graph which expresses the relation between the resistivity and thickness of the second subsurface layer on one side, and on the other side the replacement resistivity and replacement thickness which are derived from the two-layer sounding curve which is asymptotic to the second branch of the observed sounding curve. In his method separate graphs of this type are required for different values of the resistivity of the third subsurface layer. In the present paper a generalized Cagniard graph is derived which has the advantage of being independent of the value of the resistivity of the third subsurface layer. Finally, the accuracy of the method is discussed, and a procedure is described for extending its use to cases where more than three subsurface layers intervene.

Notes: Measurements have been made of amplitudes of reflected seismic waves, in order to investigate their change as a function of the shotpoint-seismometer distance and of the position of the reflection point. The change with shotpoint-seismometer distance, after correction for geometrical divergence, was usually small. This indicates either a rather strong difference between the values of Poisson's ratio for adjacent strata, or, more likely, a rather small value of the absorption coefficient. In one instance a very strong increase in amplitude with shotpoint-seismometer distance was observed. This may be attributed to incidence near the critical angle. In another instance a pronounced increase in amplitude with the position of the reflection point was observed over a very short distance. This may be due to an elongated depression of the reflecting boundary.

Notes: Using a resonance method, determinations have been made of the longitudinal bar velocity and of Poisson's ratio of thirteen different chemically pure limestones. The relation between the velocity and the density showed far less scatter than in the determinations previously published; this is primarily attributed to the high purity of the specimens used. The measurements further showed a tendency of the values of Poisson's ratio to increase with increasing density.

Notes: Mallick and Roy solved the problem of determining the apparent resistivity function for a three-layer stratification in which the central layer is a transition layer with linear change of the conductivity with depth. In the present paper the problem is solved for a transition layer with linear change of the resistivity with depth, a type of change that seems to be more common in nature than the type considered by Mallick and Roy. The solution is extended to layer stratifications involving an arbitrary number of transition layers and of homogeneous layers. The solution is given in the form of a modification of the recurrence relation that was derived by Pekeris for homogeneous layers.

Notes: The values of the filter coefficients used for the computation of electromagnetic sounding curves are studied in conjunction with the values of the input function to the filter, or the range of values which the input function may assume, and the filters are broken off at such a place that the error in the sum of the products of filter coefficient and input function does not exceed a prescribed value. This analysis is carried out for the horizontal coils system, the perpendicular coils system, and the vertical coplanar coils system. The lengths of the filters so derived depend on the layer parameters, the frequency and the coil spacing. Even in the most unfavourable cases the filters are shorter than the filters published by Koefoed, Ghosh, and Polman (1972).

Notes: Calculations are presented of reflection coefficients of plane longitudinal waves incident at oblique angles on boundary planes between elastic media. It is shown that the manner in which these reflection coefficients vary with the angle of incidence is strongly affected by the values of the Poisson's ratios of the two media. It appears that, contrary to a conclusion arrived at by Muskat and Meres, the reflection coefficient may vary appreciably with the angle of incidence in the range between O° and 30°. Possibilities of practical application of this phenomenon are discussed.

Notes: A method is described for computing master resistivity curves. It is a modification of that devised by Ehrenburg and Watson, but is superior as a shorter time is required for the computations. A collection of 31 master curves for the three layer case is presented.
