    Description: The chronic inflammatory microenvironment and immune cell dysfunction have been described as critical components for gastric tumor initiation and progression. The diffuse subtype is related to poor clinical outcomes, pronounced inflammation, and the worst prognosis. We investigated the association of polymorphisms in inflammatory response-related genes (COX-2, OGG1, TNFB, TNFA, HSPA1L, HSPA1B, VEGFA, IL17F, LGALS3, PHB, and TP53) with gastric cancer susceptibility, progression and prognosis in a Brazilian sample, focusing on the diffuse subtype. We also performed the analysis regarding the total sample of cases (not stratified for tumor subtypes), allowing the comparison between the findings. We further investigated the polymorphisms in linkage disequilibrium and performed haplotype association analyses. In the case-control study, rs1042522 (TP53) was associated with a stronger risk for developing gastric cancer in the sample stratified for diffuse subtype patients when compared to the risk observed for the total cases; CTC haplotype (rs699947/rs833061/rs2010963 VEGFA) was associated with risk while rs699947 was associated with protection for gastric malignancy in the total sample. Regarding the associations with the clinicopathological features of gastric cancer, for the diffuse subtype we found that rs699947 and rs833061 (VEGFA) were associated with outcomes related to a worse progression while rs5275 (COX-2), rs909253 (TNFB), and rs2227956 (HSPA1L) were associated to a better progression of the disease. In the total sample, rs699947 and rs833061 (VEGFA), rs4644 (LGALS3), and rs1042522 (TP53) were able to predict a worse progression while rs5275 (COX-2), rs2227956 (HSPA1L), and rs3025039 (VEGFA) a better progression. Besides, rs909253 (TNFB) predicted protection for the overall and disease-free survivals for gastric cancer. In conclusion, these results helped us to clarify the potential role of these polymorphisms in genes involved in the modulation of the inflammatory response in the pathogenesis of gastric cancer.

    Description: High-resolution transmission electron microscopy images of room-temperature fluid xenon in small faceted cavities in aluminum reveal the presence of three well-defined layers within the fluid at each facet. Such interfacial layering of simple liquids has been theoretically predicted, but observational evidence has been ambiguous. Molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the density variation induced by the layering will cause xenon, confined to an approximately cubic cavity of volume approximately 8 cubic nanometers, to condense into the body-centered cubic phase, differing from the face-centered cubic phase of both bulk solid xenon and solid xenon confined in somewhat larger (〉/=20 cubic nanometer) tetradecahedral cavities in face-centered cubic metals.     Description: The fission yeast clade--comprising Schizosaccharomyces pombe, S. octosporus, S. cryophilus, and S. japonicus--occupies the basal branch of Ascomycete fungi and is an important model of eukaryote biology. A comparative annotation of these genomes identified a near extinction of transposons and the associated innovation of transposon-free centromeres. Expression analysis established that meiotic genes are subject to antisense transcription during vegetative growth, which suggests a mechanism for their tight regulation. In addition, trans-acting regulators control new genes within the context of expanded functional modules for meiosis and stress response. Differences in gene content and regulation also explain why, unlike the budding yeast of Saccharomycotina, fission yeasts cannot use ethanol as a primary carbon source.     Description: Koishikawa Korakuen is an Edo-period garden in Japan that was inspired by scenes typical of Chinese gardens. This study aimed to clarify how Chinese tourists evaluate the Chinese elements at Koishikawa Korakuen and compare landscape preferences. The preferred landscapes were determined and analyzed using visitor-employed photography, GPS, and questionnaires. Fifty-seven Chinese visitors were asked to take photos in the garden and select their 10 favourites from among them. GIS was used to identify the positions of the preferred photos. The results indicate that “Full-Moon Bridge” is the most Chinese-looking landscape at Koishikawa Korakuen; the second is the lotus pond. Moreover, spatial analysis was conducted by dividing the garden into six areas. Within these six areas, seven locations showed high levels of appreciation.     Description: The role of rivers includes flood control and irrigation, as well as offering a place for people to interact with nature in daily life, especially for physical exercises and sports in Japan. However, in Japan, many people do not view the riversides as places for recreation; the rules for use, and the process of getting permission is also very complicated. This research argues that partial revision of existing rules regarding the use of riversides will increase the diversity of activities. The objective of this research is to clarify attitudinal differences towards riversides based on the distance between local resident and users, with the Arakawa River in Japan.     Description: The objective of this study was to clarify the method of forest activities of CSR for collaboration between companies and local communities, focusing on the Kishiwada Hilly Development district in Japan. The research method is mesh analysis by GIS, a questionnaire, interviews and a field survey. First, this area was subdivided as divided into 2625 meshes, and each of the meshes was evaluated via the natural conservation importance index and recreational usability index. Second, we examined the zoning estimation method based on spatial characteristics and the difference in human activities.     Description: Observations of comets and asteroids show that the solar nebula that spawned our planetary system was rich in water and organic molecules. Bombardment brought these organics to the young Earth's surface. Unlike asteroids, comets preserve a nearly pristine record of the solar nebula composition. The presence of cyanides in comets, including 0.01 per cent of methyl cyanide (CH3CN) with respect to water, is of special interest because of the importance of C-N bonds for abiotic amino acid synthesis. Comet-like compositions of simple and complex volatiles are found in protostars, and can readily be explained by a combination of gas-phase chemistry (to form, for example, HCN) and an active ice-phase chemistry on grain surfaces that advances complexity. Simple volatiles, including water and HCN, have been detected previously in solar nebula analogues, indicating that they survive disk formation or are re-formed in situ. It has hitherto been unclear whether the same holds for more complex organic molecules outside the solar nebula, given that recent observations show a marked change in the chemistry at the boundary between nascent envelopes and young disks due to accretion shocks. Here we report the detection of the complex cyanides CH3CN and HC3N (and HCN) in the protoplanetary disk around the young star MWC 480. We find that the abundance ratios of these nitrogen-bearing organics in the gas phase are similar to those in comets, which suggests an even higher relative abundance of complex cyanides in the disk ice.
