Notes: The molecular weight distribution functions of polystyrene degraded by shear stress in isopropylphenyl phosphate solution were compared with the calculated ones, obtained by assuming that up to a certain distance from each chain end the probability of bond scission is zero. Two phenomenological models were proposed for the probability of degradation in the central part of the chain. A comparison with experimental data suggests that the probability of degradation increases towards the center of the chain. Branched fractions formed by degradation in the presence of air were found to be present by the GPC method with on-line viscometric detection.

Notes: Single organic solvents have been found in which commerical polyvinylbutyral does not aggregate after acetylation, and can therefore be characterized from the molecular standpoint by using classical absolute methods (light scattering and membrane osmometry). In addition, this possibility is also demonstrated by means of size exclusion chromatography with both the styragel and silicagel column packings.

Notes: The time dependence of concentration separation and fractionation of polymer according to molecular weights was estimated with polymethyl methacrylate in benzene during thermal diffusion in a two-reservoir apparatus. Values of the reduced separation coefficient γ as a function of time were determined for the fractions obtained by fractional precipitation and for their mixtures. The Soret coefficients were calculated from the values of γ for t → 0 and the values of s0 for c → 0 was determined; it was found that for single fractions the relation s0 = a[η] + b (where a and b are constants holds), and that for a mixture of fractions the relation is s0 = Σ (where gi is the weight of fraction i). An inversion effect was found in following the changes of limiting viscosity number both of nonfractionated polymer and of the fraction mixtures. The use of a five-reservoir apparatus slightly improves the fractionation according to molecular weight. A considerable improvement, however, which allows the construction of a distribution curve identical with the curve obtained by fractional precipitation, was achieved by stepwise addition of the solvent into the lower part of the working space of the apparatus without reservoirs.

Notes: Thermodiffusion distribution curves of polychloroprene have a characteristic course with two inflection points and are similar to distribution curves obtained by fractional precipitation. By use of an apparatus with a series of sampling holes along a continuous diffusion chamber, more homogeneous fractions were obtained rapidly than by use of the cascade method in a five-reservoir apparatus. In the fractionation of polychloroprene, a vertical temperature gradient in the apparatus and an additional separation of the fractions of higher molecular weight which is based on the “extraction” of the polymer into the pure solvent aided separations and yielded a better distribution curve. Additional separation can be carried out in the apparatus without taking out the sample if the part the apparatus filled with the solvent has no horizontal temperature gradient in the first hours of the separation process.

Notes: The γ-ray-initiated polymerization of butadiene, isoprene, and 2,3-dimethylbutadiene-1,3 was carried out at temperatures of 20°C. and -78°C. Polymers of butadiene and isoprene with mixed linear and cyclic structure were proved to result from the polymerization at -78°C. A monocyclic structure was found for the 2,3-dimethylbutadiene-1,3 polymers initiated either at -78°C. or in the thiourea canal complex at 20°C.

Notes: The possibility of carrying out continuous fractionation of polymers by the thermodiffusion method was investigated. From the working space of a plate-type column, fractions of polymer were continuously withdrawn simultaneously with filling of the column with fresh solution from a storage vessel. After equilibrium had been established, the distributions of molecular weights of the fractions were determined by a modified Baker and Williams method. In the same apparatus, and at constant temperature and concentration, fractionation, which may be characterized by a limiting viscosity number, is dependent on the total rate of withdrawal and on the ratios of amounts of polymer withdrawn in various places on the column.
