    Notes: Microwave plasmas are generated in helium, neon, argon, krypton, and xenon at a range of microwave powers from 300 to 1800 W. A floating Langmuir double probe is employed to determine plasma electron density and temperature for all five species. The standard turbulence analysis is carried out by using time resolved neutral line emission data form these gases at a sampling rate of 100 MHz. From the Fourier power spectrum of the data, the strongest fluctuation frequency is found to be consistently the fundamental or a second harmonic of a turbulence characteristic frequency in the spectra. In all five species the strongest frequency is not influenced by increased microwave power even though other thermodynamic parameters are changed. The low chaotic dimension for all species seems independent of microwave power and of turbulent fluctuation energy. The phase space trajectories show simplicity and periodicities are consistent with the low chaotic dimension and with the peak frequencies obtained from the fluctuation spectra. The deterministic cyclic evolution of the phase space trajectories with low chaotic dimension for our plasma suggests underlying simplicity in the local turbulence physics. The average value of the strongest fluctuation frequency decreases with increasing atomic weight suggesting that the fundamental frequency is a characterizing parameter for the turbulent system. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have designed and constructed a low temperature, ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM), taking extreme measures to isolate the microscope from acoustic, vibrational, and electronic noise. We combined a 4 K STM with line-of-sight dosing to enable one to position the crystal surface in front of an impinging molecular beam as in scattering experiments. Due to the mechanical stability of the instrument and the minimal thermal drift associated with working at 4 K we are able to locate and to image repeatedly isolated adsorbates and atomic-scale structures, such as step edges, for extended periods days. The instrument has been designed for the topographic and spectroscopic characterization of atoms and molecules on metal and semiconductor surfaces, for the investigation of the mechanism by which the STM images adsorbates on surfaces, and for inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy of single molecules. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A transient increase is observed in both the spectral energy decay rate and the degree of chaotic complexity at the interface of a shock wave and a turbulent ionized gas. Even though the gas is apparently brought to rest by the shock wave, no evidence is found either of prompt relaminarization or of any systematic influence of end-wall material thermal conductivities on the turbulence parameters. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Flows with coherent structures allow see-free measurements of local velocity and velocity fluctuations. Continuous turbulent velocity histories in ionizing shock waves are obtained at a 10-MHz sampling rate. From this, correlation profiles and frequency spectra are determined which reveal the presence of prominent high-frequency components.

    Notes: Using the magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) and magnetic force microscopy we have investigated the shape dependence of magnetization reversal in a series of cobalt and permalloy nanoscale dot arrays. The patterns were produced by e-beam lithography combined with e-beam deposition and lift-off techniques. To avoid pattern to pattern variations in growth-induced anisotropy and or thickness, elliptical elements of varying aspect ratio were deposited simultaneously on a single substrate. All arrays were 1.0×2.5 μm tetragonal lattices and were fabricated with 300 Å thickness of cobalt and with 200 and 300 Å thickness of permalloy. From MOKE data we extract the field at which the onset of switching occurs for each array. For each material (viz. Co or permalloy), and thickness (200 or 300 Å), the switching field versus aspect ratio can be interpreted by a single nucleation field. The dependence of the nucleation barrier on the material and its thickness is discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We demonstrate a self-assembling method for growing semiconductor quantum dots into ordered lattices. The quantum dot nucleation and positioning into lattices was achieved using a periodic subsurface stressor lattice. Three different two-dimensional (2D) square lattices are demonstrated. The unit cell dimensions, orientation, and the number of quantum dots in the basis are tunable. We find that the 2D lattice can be replicated at periodic intervals along the growth direction to form a three-dimensional (3D) lattice of quantum dots. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The usefulness of gel filtration through cross-linked dextrans as a means of separating protein components in the water extracts of flour was investigated. Dextrans employed included Sephadex G-25, G-50, G-75, G-100, and G-200, while distilled water and several concentrations of lactic acid were used as eluting solvents. The most effective combination was Sephadex G-100 gel with 0.5N lactic acid as eluant. Although single protein components could not be isolated by this technique, it was possible to effect a simplification of the protein mixture and a concentration of some components in relatively small fractions of the eluate from gel columns. The combination of gel filtration and preparative starch-gel electrophoresis was utilized to isolate a fraction which migrated electrophoretically as a single component.
