    Notes: This article presents an analysis of the response of silicon carbide to high velocity impact. This includes a wide range of loading conditions that produce large strains, high strain rates, and high pressures. Experimental data from the literature are used to determine constants for the Johnson–Holmquist constitutive model for brittle materials (JH-1). It is possible to directly determine the strength and pressure response of the intact material from test data in the literature. After the ceramic has failed, however, there are not adequate experimental data to directly determine the response of the failed material. Instead, the response is inferred from a comparison of computational results to ballistic penetration test results. After the constants have been obtained for the JH-1 model, a wide range of computational results are compared to experimental data in the literature. Generally, the computational results are in good agreement with the experimental results. Included are computational results that model interface defeat, which occurs when a high velocity projectile impacts a ceramic target and then dwells on the surface of the ceramic with no significant penetration. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper examines the usefulness of cylinder-impact test data to determine constants for various computational constitutive models. The Johnson–Cook and Zerilli–Armstrong constitutive models are evaluated by comparing model predictions to tension, torsion, and cylinder-impact test data. Then the cylinder-impact test data are used to determine constitutive model constants for various forms of these models. Under bounded conditions of strains and strain rates, this approach can produce useful results. It can also produce very erroneous results if not used properly.

    Notes: This article presents an analysis of the response of boron carbide (B4C) to severe loading conditions that produce large strains, high strain rates, and high pressures. Experimental data from the literature are used to determine and/or estimate constants for the JH-2 constitutive model for brittle materials. Because B4C is a very strong material, it is not always possible to determine the constants explicitly. Instead they must sometimes be inferred from the limited experimental data that are available. The process of determining constants provides insight into the constitutive behavior for some loading conditions, but it also raises questions regarding the response under other loading conditions. Several Lagrangian finite element and Eulerian finite difference computations are provided to illustrate responses for a variety of impact and penetration problems. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper presents an algorithm for dynamic Lagrangian computations for solids, in plane strain geometry, with variable nodal connectivity to allow for severe distortions. The nodes are somewhat analogous to flexible circular disks. When they move closer together than their equilibrium distance they generate compressive, repulsive forces. Conversely, when they move apart, they generate tensile, attractive forces. Material strength effects are also included. Because a node can only be affected by its ‘neighbour’ nodes, the approach has been designated the ‘NABOR’ approach. The key to this approach is that it is possible to have variable nodal connectivity - a node can acquire new neighbours, thus allowing all forms of distortion. The NABOR algorithm has been incorporated as an option into the explicit finite element code, EPIC-2. By using both the NABOR grid and the EPIC-2 finite element grid together, it is possible to perform Lagrangian computations for a wide range of problems.

    Notes: Earlier publications demonstrated the capability of the EPIC-3 code to perform high velocity impact computations in three dimensions.1,2 These capabilities were demonstrated with simplified material and sliding surface models in a core-contained computer program. This paper presents recent developments which include more comprehensive material and sliding surface formulations, and an expanded computer program which can handle problems of unlimited size by beffering data between disc files and core. The EPIC-3 code is based on an explicit, finite element, Lagrangian formulation which uses constant strain tetrahedral elements.

    Notes: There are many two-dimensional computer codes available to compute wave propagation and plastic flow in solids. These codes are based on finite element or finite difference algorithms and are generally capable of analysing both axisymmetric and plane strain geometries. For the direct integration codes such as EPIC-2,1,2 it is possible to perform plane stress computations by making only minor modifications to the plane strain algorithm. This note describes these modifications and presents an example.
