    Notes: Regression and neural network models of wage determination are constructed where the explanatory variables include detailed information about the impact of school curricula on future earnings. It is established that there are strong non-linearities and interaction effects present in the relationship between curriculum and earnings. The results have important implications in the context of the human capital vs. signalling and screening debate. They also throw light on contemporary policy issues concerning the desirability of breadth vs. depth in the school curriculum.

    Notes: . This paper examines the extent to which regional differences in wage rigidity exist and can help explain interregional differences in unemployment trends. Phillips-curve models of manufacturing wage inflation are estimated for the 10 largest states in the U.S., the 10 economic regions in the United Kingdom, and the 11 Lände in the Federal Republic of Germany over the 1971 to 1985 period. There is evidence of significant differences in the responsiveness of wage inflation to unemployment and the rate of change in consumer prices across the regions within each country and across the three nations. An index of real wage rigidity derived from the Phillips-curve coefficients is positively correlated with unemployment trends across the regions in our sample, suggesting that wage rigidity may be an important determinant of regional differences in labor market responses to macroeconomic shocks.

    Notes: This note reports the results of a survey of firms operating in Britain concerning the impact on their costs and operations of the Social Action Programme. We find that the realised and anticipated adverse impacts of the legislation are rather limited, although both do appear to be greater for firms which are relatively large, skill intensive, and which have a substantial amount of trade with other EU countries. In particular, the survey results provide little evidence to suggest that the imposition of a minimum wage of £3.50 per hour would have a substantial adverse impact on employment. Evidence does, however, suggest that firms which pay relatively low wages are likely to be affected more than others by the legislation.

    Notes: This paper examines the stability of the wage inflation process in Britain and America from 1892 to 1991. Utilizing a simple model of the aggregate labor market that treats wage inflation and the annual change in the unemployment rate as jointly endogenous variables, we find no evidence of substantial parameter shifts. In particular, there is no evidence of a secular increase in wage rigidity in either country nor is there support for the notion that periods of persistently high unemployment, such as the 1930s or the 1980s, are characterized by significant increases in wage rigidity. Our results are consistent with the findings of several other studies and indicate that wage rigidity has been a stable characteristic of labor markets since the end of the 19th century. Our results also suggest that the unemployment performance of these two countries over time can be explained by the interaction of demand shocks and wage rigidity.

    Notes: In this paper we evaluate the extent to which changes over time in women’s labour market destinations are due to characteristics, on the one hand, and prices, on the other. Multinomial and nested logit methods are used to analyse US data for 1970 and 1990, and the results are compared. The latter method, which has not previously been employed in the present context, alleviates problems due to the strong assumption in simpler models of the independence of irrelevant alternatives, and provides much additional useful information.
