    Notes: New features in superconductor/ferromagnet multilayers have been observed. A nonmonotonic dependence of the superconducting Tc on the ferromagnetic layer thickness, due to the coupling across a thin magnetic layer, has been observed in both Nb/Gd multilayers and trilayers. The results are consistent with those of the predicted π-phase coupling. Effects on superconductivity due to insulating ferromagnetic layers have been observed in NbN/GdN multilayers, where the main pair-breaking effect is that of the ferromagnetic walls. The insulating ferromagnetic layers also give rise to very large superconducting critical fields. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of magnetic disorder on the magnetization reversal process in thin Co/CoO films has been investigated. The antiferromagnetic CoO layer allows a reversible tuning of the magnetic disorder by simple temperature variation. For temperatures above a critical temperature Tc, we observe a discontinuous magnetization reversal, whereas smooth magnetization loops occur for T〈Tc. Our measurements establish the existence of a disorder-driven critical point in the nonequilibrium phase diagram. In addition, we observe scaling behavior in the vicinity of the critical point and determine the critical exponents to β=0.022±0.006 and βδ=0.30±0.03. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The colossal magnetoresistance of La1−xCaxMnO3 has been reported in many experiments. We present our study of the anomalous Hall effect in epitaxial La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 thin films. We have measured the temperature dependence of resistivity, magnetization, and anomalous Hall effect coefficients between 300 and 5 K for our samples grown on different substrates. From these studies, the relation between the resistivity and anomalous Hall effect coefficient as well as the temperature dependence of the anomalous Hall effect coefficient are explored. Our results show that the direction of the anomalous Hall effect is reversed below approximately 100 K. This sign reversal is discussed in terms of band structure and the coexistence of hole-like and electron-like conduction. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have studied the magnetic stability in exchange-bias and exchange-spring systems during repeated reversal of the pinned layer. The samples were prepared by epitaxial sputter deposition. The exchange-biased system consists of a combination of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Fe/Cr superlattices. The exchange-spring system is a bilayer structure made of hard Sm–Co and soft Fe ferromagnetic layers. The magnetic properties were investigated using the magneto-optic Kerr effect during repeated reversal of the soft layer magnetization by field cycling up to 107 times. The experimentally observed decay behaviors are discussed in terms of microstructure and spin configuration of the pinning layers. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Face-centered cubic (fcc) Fe wedges of 0–12 ML were grown by means of molecular beam epitaxy onto a novel substrate: flat Cu(110) with an oxygen-induced, long-range ordered striped phase, and studied in situ with medium energy electron diffraction (MEED) and the surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE). In contrast to Fe growth on either clean or oxygen-saturated Cu(110), the films on the striped substrates retain a layer-by-layer growth mode up to 6–7 ML and are fcc at least up to 12 ML. In addition, satellite peaks were observed on both sides of the MEED (0, 0) streak, indicating a long-range-ordered lateral modulation of the Fe surface. We postulate that the Fe films grow conformally onto the original striped substrate. SMOKE studies show that these fcc Fe wedges are ferromagnetic with an easy axis along the original stripes for Fe thickness 〉4 ML and a remanant magnetization that increases linearly with thickness beyond 4 ML. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The microscopic origin of the 18 Å period in the oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling of Fe/Cr(100) and (211) superlattices is investigated by alloying the Cr spacer with V to alter its Fermi surface. The addition of V increases or decreases in size the various Fermi surface calipers that are candidates for governing the oscillation period, such as those that span the ellipse, lens, octahedron, and nested sheets. Epitaxial sputtered superlattices of (100) and (211) orientation were grown and characterized via magnetoresistance measurements as a function of spacer layer thickness for different V-doping levels. A small decrease of the oscillation period is found experimentally which strongly implicates the N-centered ellipse as the origin of the 18 Å period in Fe/Cr superlattices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Two-layered Ruddlesden–Popper phase SrO(La1−xSrxMnO3)2, with x=0.3 and 0.4, exhibits colossal magnetoresistance, a magnetic anisotropy which is strongly composition-dependent, very little remanence, and an anomalous low-field magnetization (M) plateau between the Curie temperature (TC) and T*∼300 K. The resistivity peaks near TC for both in-plane and out-of-plane currents. The magnetization plateau is not intrinsic to the crystal, but is attributed to intergrowth defects, consisting of one additional or missing SrO blocking layers, as observed in transmission electron micrographs. The intergrowths exhibit interesting two-dimensional magnetic behavior, for both the x=0.3 and 0.4 compositions. For x=0.4, M scales as (1−T/T*)β, with β=0.25±0.02. For x=0.3, the intergrowths exhibit an easy axis in the a-b plane due to the shape anisotropy, while for T〈TC, M lies along the c axis. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the effect of uniaxial deformation on the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect in melt-spun Co–Cu ribbons. Postprecipitation deformation does not affect the Co particles, but the mechanical processing increases the structural disorder and the resistivity; thus the GMR effect is degraded. Deforming the metastable alloy prior to precipitation of the Co particles possibly affects the particle nucleation process. As a result, the low-field sensitivity of the GMR effect increases slightly.

    Notes: We present results on the magnetic reversal process in epitaxial Sm–Co(11¯00)/TM (TM=Fe, Co) bilayer films prepared via magnetron sputtering onto Cr-buffered single-crystal MgO substrates. The magnetically hard Sm–Co films have 20 T uniaxial anisotropy and coercivities 〉3 T at room temperature. The magnetization of the soft layer is pinned at the interface to the hard-magnet layer and switches reversibly as expected for an exchange-spring magnet. With increasing soft layer thickness, the coercive field of the hard layer becomes significantly less than that of a single layer. We also present numerical solutions to a one-dimensional model that provide the spin configuration for each atomic layer. Comparison of the experimental results with the model simulations indicates that the exchange-spring behavior of our bilayer films can be understood from the intrinsic parameters of the hard and soft layers. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Epitaxial Sm–Co(11¯00) and (112¯0) films have been grown by magnetron sputtering onto Cr(211) and (100) buffer layers, respectively. The Sm–Co(11¯00) films exhibit uniaxial in-plane anisotropies of (approximate)20–25 T and room-temperature coercive fields that increase to 4.1 T as the film thickness decreases to 75 Å. The 3 T coercivities of the (112¯0) films are independent of thickness. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
