Description: Near-adult cats, fasted overnight, and given a single meal of a complete amino acid diet without arginine, developed hyperammonemia and showed clinical symptoms of ammonia toxicity within 2 hours. One cat (2.7 kilograms) died 4.5 hours after ingesting only 8 grams of the diet. Since ornithine also prevented hyperammonemia, it appears that the domestic cat cannot synthesize ornithine.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Morris, J G -- Rogers, Q R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1978 Jan 27;199(4327):431-2.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/619464" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Cattle grazing St. Augustine grass growing on peaty muck soils in the Florida Everglades developed anemia associated with the presence of Heinz bodies and suboptimal concentrations of selenium in blood. Selenium supplementation corrected the anemia, prevented Heinz body formation, increased the body weight of cows and calves, and elevated blood selenium. This may be the first recorded example of widespread anemia in a population due to selenium deficiency.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Morris, J G -- Cripe, W S -- Chapman, H L Jr -- Walker, D F -- Armstrong, J B -- Alexander, J D Jr -- Miranda, R -- Sanchez, A Jr -- Sanchez, B -- Blair-West, J R -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1984 Feb 3;223(4635):491-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6691160" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Thousands of pet cats die each year with dilated cardiomyopathy, the cause of which is unknown. Although taurine is present in millimolar concentrations in the myocardium of all mammals, taurine depletion has not previously been associated with a decrease in myocardial function in any species. In this study, low plasma taurine concentrations associated with echocardiographic evidence of myocardial failure were observed in 21 cats fed commercial cat foods and in 2 of 11 cats fed a purified diet containing marginally low concentrations of taurine for 4 years. Oral supplementation of taurine resulted in increased plasma taurine concentrations and was associated with normalization of left ventricular function in both groups of cats. Since myocardial concentrations of taurine are directly related to plasma concentrations and low plasma concentrations were found to be associated with myocardial failure in cats, a direct link between decreased taurine concentration in the myocardium and decreased myocardial mechanical function is proposed.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Pion, P D -- Kittleson, M D -- Rogers, Q R -- Morris, J G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1987 Aug 14;237(4816):764-8.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3616607" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: [Auszug] WHEN micro-organisms grow on glycollate as sole source of carbon, reactions ancillary to the tri-carboxylic acid cycle must occur to replenish, from the C2-growth substrate, the intermediates of the cycle which have been removed in the course of cellular syntheses. In micro-organisms such as E. ...

Notes: Abstract We present an optimal piecewise-linear approximation method for the objective function of separable convex quadratic programs. The method provides guidelines on how many grid points to use and how to position them for a piecewise-linear approximation if the error induced by the approximation is to be bounded a priori.

Notes: Abstract A spatial price equilibrium problem is modeled which allows piecewise linear convex flow costs, and a capacity limit on the trade flow between each supply/demand pair of regions. Alternatively, the model determines the locations of intermediate distribution centers in a market economy composed of separate regions, each with approximately linear supply and demand functions. Equilibrium prices, regional supply and demand quantities, and commodity flows are determined endogenously. The model has a quadratic programming formulation which is then reduced by exploiting the structure. The reduced model is particularly well suited to solution using successive over-relaxation.

Notes: Summary 1. When metronidazole (1-β-hydroxyethyl-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole) was added at 50 μg/ml to a liquid (35°C) culture of Clostridium acetobutylicum (0.5 mg dry wt of organisms/ml), it inhibited growth for only 2 h; thereafter, growth resumed at a slower and arithmetic rate. Consumption of glucose and excretion of acetate plus butyrate continued, though at diminished rates, during the period of bacteriostasis, and the ATP content of the organisms did not decline. 2. Metronidazole inhibited production of H2 by a culture of Cl. acetobutylicum, yet it only temporarily halted formation of H2 from pyruvate by cell extracts, and had no deleterious effect on the simultaneous production of acetyl phosphate and CO2. After a relatively short time no residual metronidazole was detectable in this cell-free system and H2 production resumed at its former rate. 3. The drug did not inhibit the hydrogenases of either Cl. acetobutylicum or Cl. pasteurianum, but having an E′ 0 at pH 7 of approx. -0.23 V (on the hydrogen scale), it acted as a preferential acceptor of electrons from reduced ferredoxin (or reduced viologen dyes). Reduction of metronidazole was a 6 electron process compatible with complete reduction of its 5-nitro group. Yet, although the expected decrease in absorbance at 320 nm was observed, the 5-amino derivative did not accumulate (probably due to its intrinsic lability). 4. Since many aryl nitro compounds are similarly able to accept electrons from reduced ferredoxin, it seems that additional reasons might have to be sought to explain the unique effectiveness of metronidazole as an antimicrobial agent.
