    Notes: Soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (SXMCD) of the L2 and L3 edges is used to independently determine magnetic information for single crystal FexCo1−x alloy thin films (0≤x≤1) grown on ZnSe(001). Similar to surface magneto-optical Kerr effect (SMOKE) but with element and site specificity, SXMCD, which is the difference between the absorption of left and right circularly polarized soft x rays, can be used to determine a variety of magnetic parameters including spin-orbit and exchange interaction energies. Measurements made at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) U4B beamline on the Fe–Co alloy system exhibit unique changes in SXMCD signal as a function of alloy concentration. The SXMCD signal is found to rise linearly with reducing atomic concentration for both the Co and Fe. At the dilute limit of 10% FE (x=0.1), the Fe L3 SXMCD is found to increase by almost a factor of three to near 40%. In some Fe/Co structures, the largest reported SXMCD values in excess of 70% are observed! This example shows the utility of SXMCD in obtaining magnetic information in alloy systems in an element specific and even site specific manner.

    Notes: The magnetic structure of Cr films deposited on single crystal Fe(001)/GaAs(001) substrates is investigated by soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (SXMCD) of the L2 and L3 absorption edges. We find that 0.25 ML Cr coverages result in Cr moments aligned with each other and antialigned to the underlying Fe moment direction. The Cr moment is measured to be 0.6±0.2 μB. Additional Cr deposition results in a monotonically reducing averaged moment consistent with the island growth of ferromagnetic Cr sheets of a single layer, antialigned with adjoining sheets. SXMCD measurements of the trilayer structures clearly show the antiferromagnetic coupling of the two Fe films through the interlying Cr film.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of MBE-grown ultrathin Ni films on a Cu(001) substrate are investigated using soft-x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (SXMCD) spectroscopic technique. These measurements are carried out by recording Ni L2,3 absorption spectra with highly circularly polarized soft x rays recently obtained at the AT&T Bell Laboratories Dragon synchrotron radiation beamline.1 For low Ni coverages, no MCD effect along the 〈100〉 direction is observed at room temperature, while for intermediate coverages, the MCD effect becomes appreciable and increases to its bulk value at ∼25 ML. With only the assumption that the unoccupied density of states of Ni lie mainly in the minority bands, the amount of the MCD effect can be related to the magnetic moment. The thickness and temperature dependence of the magnetic moment obtained from our SXMCD measurements are compared with those of Ni/Cu(111) obtained from magneto-optical data.2 The advantages and differences between the SXMCD and MOKE techniques are discussed. The novel SXMCD technique allows for element specific magnetic characterization of a variety of interesting structural architectures including 2 D films, dilute impurities, and disordered matrices.

    Notes: We have examined the structure of Mn in coherent ultrathin-film (Mn/Ag) superlattices by application of conversion-electron extended x-ray absorption fine structure (CEEXAFS), which is a near-surface variant of extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). The superlattices were grown by molecular beam epitaxy with 20 to 100 periods, the periods consisting of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 14 monolayers (ML's) of Mn and 10–15 ML's of Ag. Exploiting the single-crystal nature of the samples and the polarization properties of synchrotron radiation, we have found that the Mn structure for superlattices with 3 ML Mn layers, corresponding to one complete unit cell, is nearly fcc with a c/a ratio of 1.4±0.1 (for fcc, c/a=(square root of)2). For a superlattice with 5 ML Mn layers, corresponding to two complete unit cells, the out-of-plane spacing is decreased to give a body-centered-tetragonal structure with a c/a ratio of 1.13±0.06. No measurable change occurs in the Mn structure as the Mn layer thickness increases further to 14 ML's. Above 14 ML's, the Mn film cannot maintain the single-crystal phase and loses long-range order. A detailed analysis of the CEEXAFS data shows a continuous increase of the disorder within the films.

    Notes: The effects of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) cap layers on the magnetic and electronic properties of La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) underlayers was determined by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and x-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques.     Notes: Due to the closely overlapping L-edge EXAFS regions for the ferromagnetic 3d metals, their analyses have not generally been attempted. Similarly, although analysis of L-edge magnetic EXAFS (MEXAFS) is desirable because of the enhanced amplitude of the signal compared to K-edge MEXAFS, such experiments on the ferromagnetic 3d metals have also not been attempted. In order to address this problem, we describe the use of an iterative Van Cittert deconvolution approach to isolate the LIII-edge from the LII-edge EXAFS and MEXAFS signals for Fe, Co and Ni thin films. The deconvoluted LIII-edge EXAFS data are in agreement with theoretically generated LIII-edge data, thus demonstrating the validity of this approach. Results from the deconvolution of the MEXAFS data also qualitatively agree with previously published MEXAFS data on the same elements at the K-edge. The results for the Fe EXAFS and MEXAFS data will be presented here. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magnetic circular dichroism measurements of room temperature, sputter deposited Co86Cr12Ta2 and Co86Cr12Pt2 films were performed to investigate the local magnetic ordering of the Co and Cr atoms. The results demonstrate that the Cr has a net magnetic moment and that a small fraction of the Cr is magnetically oriented opposite to the Co moment. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: High resolution photoemission measurements have been performed for the ferromagnetic transition of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 and for the order–disorder transition of La0.4Ca0.6MnO3. The band gap collapsed below the Curie temperature and the density of states at the Fermi level increases with cooling. Upon cooling through the order–disorder transition temperatures, TCO, the band gap increases by ∼50 meV. This change in the gap is consistent with the change in the activation energy above and below TCO estimated from conductivity data. We have also performed soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements at Mn L2,3 edges for ferromagnetic La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 and La0.8Ca0.2MnO3. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have prepared single crystal face centered cubic (fcc) magnetic transition metal films (Co,Ni,Fe) on (001) diamonds, the thickness of the films varying between a few tenths of a nanometer to over 100 nm. The crystalline quality and fourfold symmetry of these layers was monitored in situ during the film growth with RHEED and a chemical analysis was performed using Auger spectroscopy. In addition, the structure of the samples was investigated ex situ using X-ray diffraction and EXAFS, demonstrating the single crystal, fcc (001) structure throughout each entire film. The magnetic characterization was performed with Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) and Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) hysteresis loops. The saturation magnetization of the Co films is only slightly lower than the literature values. The coercive fields are very small (∼25 Oe) and the magnetization reversal very sharp. The FMR yielded a fourfold anisotropy comparable to literature values. The observation of the first standing spinwaves underlines the good quality. The Ni films are tetragonally distorted due to the 1.2% mismatch. The FMR data indicate a significant perpendicular anisotropy slightly smaller than 4πM, the fourfold in-plane anisotropy being comparable to the bulk value. The saturation magnetization is reduced by 30% compared to bulk values, probably due to nickel-carbide which was observed in the XRD data from some samples. Neither the in-plane 〈110〉 nor the in-plane 〈100〉 axis show an easy axis behavior and both require fields in excess of 6000 Oe to saturate, the coercive fields being about 200 Oe. The RHEED patterns of the Fe films show single crystal growth with a lattice constant comparable to diamond, indicating an fcc structure. A similar structural and magnetic characterization of these films will also be presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Magnetoresistance measurements have been performed on epitaxial metal/ferromagnetic insulator bilayers. They are more sensitive to magnetic behavior at the interface of such structures than magnetization measurements. It is clear from the magnetoresistance data that previously reported slope discontinuities in the resistance versus temperature of such heterostructures are magnetic in origin. These studies demonstrate that the conduction electrons of the metal are coupled to the spins in the magnetic insulator, and act as probes of the magnetic state at the interface between the two materials. An example of the usefulness of this probe is shown by magnetoresistance measurements on a Ag/EuO bilayer.
