Notes: A collective Thomson scattering diagnostic is being implemented at JET to diagnose the velocity distribution and density of alpha particles and energetic ions. This diagnostic consists of a number of major subsystems including: a high-power 140-GHz gyrotron, a 32-channel 12-GHz bandwidth heterodyne receiver, efficient corrugated waveguide systems, variable polarizers, and in vacuum beam steering mirrors. Proper calibration of these subsystems for signal level losses, positioning, and polarization is imperative for the successful operation of the diagnostic and to facilitate the interpretation of the scattered data. A low-power Gunn oscillator was used to verify the polarization rotation induced by the seven miter bends in the receiver transmission line. The full bandwidth receiver front end losses, including the sapphire tokamak vacuum window, were initially calibrated by using the hot tokamak vessel wall as a blackbody source at approximately 310 °C. Background ECE measurements will be presented.

Notes: The fast ion and α-particle diagnostic at JET is based on collective Thomson scattering of high power millimeter-wave radiation. The principal aim of the diagnostic will be the measurement of the spatially resolved velocity distribution of fast α particles when tritium is introduced in JET plasmas, although several other applications are foreseen. The diagnostic uses a 140 GHz, 500 kW, gyrotron as the source of probing radiation and a heterodyne detection system. The diagnostic came into operation during the last JET operational campaign. First measurements were made of the thermal and mildly suprathermal (induced by ion cyclotron resonance heating) ion feature. The results confirmed expectations, indicating that the diagnostic should give the predicted performance for observation of α-particle populations in the DT phase. The signal-to-noise ratio is limited by the noise on the background radiation (electron cyclotron emission), which has a minimum around 140 GHz only when JET is operated at B∼3.4 T. To further improve the S/N and to make the diagnostic suitable for operation at higher field, which is now being considered for some of the DT plasmas, a viewing dump will be installed before the DT phase. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A hollow relativistic electron beam produced in a strong axial magnetic field has been extracted into a neutral gas cell where the field is zero. In the field-free region, equilibrium is dictated by a balance between the vz×Bθ radial pinch force and the centrifugal outward force. Extraction and propagation of these beams has been studied experimentally with a variety of diagnostics. A strong, low-frequency filamentation instability is observed after extraction. In general, 80% of the beam energy has been extracted and propagated 75 cm. Beam equilibrium properties are in good agreement with simple theory with the exception of the azimuthal plasma current.

Notes: Temporally and spectrally resolved 3ω0/2 harmonic emission has been recorded from 1.05 μm laser-irradiated thin foil targets which become underdense during the laser pulse of 600–900 psec. Changes in the spectra of both the backscattered and forward scattered harmonic light are observed coincident with the disappearance of the nc surface. The results are analyzed by considering the matching conditions for the generation of the 3ω0/2 light, including the effects of plasma wave refraction in the inhomogeneous plasma.

Notes: Abstract The majority of marine populations are demographically open; their replenishment is largely or exclusively dependent on a supply of juveniles from the plankton. In spite of much recent research, no consensus has yet been reached regarding the importance of recruitment relative to other demographic processes in determining local population densities. We argue 1. that demographic theory suggests that, except under restrictive and unlikely conditions, recruitment must influence local population density to some extent. Therefore, 2. the question as to whether the size of a particular population is limited by recruitment is misguided. Finally, 3. the effect of recruitment on population size can be difficult to detect but is nonetheless real. A major weakness of most existing studies is a lack of attention to the survival of recruits over appropriate scales of time and space. Acknowledgment of the multifactorial determination of population density should guide the design of future experimental studies of the demography of open populations.

Notes: Growth rates of negative mass instabilities in conventional and modified betatrons are calculated by analytic methods and by performing three-dimensional particle simulations. In contrast to earlier work, toroidal corrections to the field equations are included in the analytic model. As a result, good agreement with numerical simulations is obtained. The simulations show that the nonlinear development of the instabilities can seriously disrupt the beam.

Notes: [Auszug] MOST bearing alloys consist of a matrix of a soft metal in which are distributed uniformly small crystals of a harder metal. Such a structure has been found by long experience to possess the most satisfactory mechanical, frictional, and low-wearing properties. It is usually supposed that the ...

Notes: [Auszug] Different physical and biological processes prevail at different scales. As a consequence, small-scale experiments or local observations provide limited insights into regional or global phenomena. One solution is to incorporate spatial scale explicitly into the experimental and sampling ...
