Notes: North American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has a long history of use and is currently a commercially reliable natural health commodity. Ginsenosides or triterpene saponins are generally regarded as bioactive constituents for several observed health effects associated with ginseng. North American ginseng was dried using 3 different drying techniques to assess the ginsenoside content of prepared extracts. Drying methods included freeze-drying (FD), air-drying (AD), and vacuum microwave-drying (VMD) of ginseng root. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis showed that FD ginseng processing gave greater (P≥ 0.05) amounts of the fingerprint ginsenosides Rg1 (28 ± 0.9 mg/g, dry weight) and Re (45 ± 0.1) compared with AD (Rg1 19 ± 0.7, Re 29 ± 0.1) and VMD (Rg1 22 ± 0.8, Re 24 ± 0.1); whereas, VMD produced greater amounts of Rb1 (83 ± 0.1) and Rd (13 ± 0.0) than FD (Rb1 62 ± 0.1, Rd 9 ± 0.1) and AD (Rb1 69 ± 0.1, Rd 5 ± 0.0), respectively. Total ginsenoside content was similar for FD and VMD and was the lowest (P≥ 0.05) for AD. Electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analysis showed a total of 12 compounds detected in FD ginseng compared with 10 compounds in ginseng dried by both VMD and AD. Our results support the fact that FD and VMD drying methods of North American ginseng can improve both extraction efficiency and actual retention of individual ginsenoside in root material.

Notes: Natural fibers are excellent substitute materials for man made fibers in making fiberreinforced composites due to their high specific strength and modulus, low density, low price, easyavailability in some countries, recyclable and degradable properties. They have raised great attentionsamong material scientists and engineers in the past decade. Many researches have been conducted tostudy the mechanical properties, especially interfacial properties of natural fiber reinforcedcomposites. However, the properties, such as mechanical performances, moisture absorptionbehaviors, et. al of natural fibers themselves have been seldom investigated. Knowing the relationshipbetween microstructures and properties of natural fibers are important for understanding the bulkproperties of natural fiber composites and also good instructions for designing bio-mimic materials. In this study, four kinds of natural fibers which were extracted from different plant sources wereinvestigated. The microstructures of these natural fibers were revealed with the aid of opticalmicroscopy. Microstructure models were thereof set up and mechanical properties for therepresentative volume element were assumed. Fiber bundle fracture models together with probabilitystatistics analysis were employed to calculate the mechanical properties of natural fibers. The resultswere compared with the experimental measurements. Different mechanical behaviors of naturalfibers which were functioned differently in the nature were clearly explained by the above studies

Notes: This paper has partitioned the laser range-finder into two parts: one is the laser diode(LD) driver circuit and the other is the focusing lens. The LD’s surface temperature rise will affectthe LD’s light-power simultaneously when an LD works in a steady current. For this reason, wedesigned a driver circuit to control the LD’s light power to be effective and so as to freely adjust theLD’s brightness. There are three parts in driver circuit: the regulated power circuits, the regulatedcurrent circuit, and the limited current circuit. This investigation used a power meter to measure theLD’s power which was relative to the surface temperature. Then the experimental results werecompared with the PSpice simulation, and the differences between the result and the simulationwere eventually analyzed. The limited current circuit is an important part in our systems because the LD is easily damagedwhen active current is unstable. Similarly, the surface temperature would be raised after the LD isworking for a while which results in the circuit failure. If the LD has worked for a very long time, the heat generated in the circuit should be taken care of. Therefore, we added an automatic powercontrol circuit (APC) into the LD driver circuit in order to reduce the impact of heat. The emitted distance of laser beam could be up to 10 meters with adjusted focusing lens. Thelaser spot was extended into an ellipse before focusing laser beams. Therefore, we had to put afocal lens to shape the the laser spot into a circular spot. During this experiment, the LD did notwork directly without installing the heat sink. Otherwise, the high temperature would damage LDimmediately

Notes: The scanning system which uses the non-linear focusing lens is usually accompanied by amajor problem that is a non-constant scanning velocity of the spots in the projection plane. Moreover, the energy of the spots and the shape of the drilling holes would be affected. Hence, thefocal lens of the scanning system usually uses the f-theta lens to solve this problem. This paperproposes a method utilizing the ZEMAX to analyze the commercial F-theta lens. The resultsindicate the F-theta lens can increase the quality of the drilling holes and amend the projectionplane. In order to verify the analysis results, each diameter of an array holes drilled by the CO2 laserdrilling machine would be measured. The experimental results can demonstrate that the percentageof the variation in the diameter of holes is close to the simulation results. Therefore, the method caneffectively analyze the F-theta lens of the scanning systems

Notes: Using the development tool C++ Builder and adopting object oriented programming method, the ceramic/metal gradient thermal barrier coating design software (CCDS) is developed according tosoftware engineering criterion. The CCDS, which has user-friendly interface, is composed of threefunctional modules: preprocess module, analysis module and post process module. In addition, thissoftware is attached with an optimal design module and an expert module. The calculation and design ofthe ceramic/metal gradient thermal barrier coating can be carried out by the CCDS, and the numericalresults show good agreement with the analytical results
