    Notes: An internal coordinate Hamiltonian model has been constructed to model torsional motion in the OH stretching vibrational overtone region of methanol, CH3OH. The model includes harmonic couplings between OH and CH stretching vibrations and Fermi resonance interactions between OH stretches and COH bends and between CH stretches and CH2 bends. A symmetrized basis set has been used to form block diagonal Hamiltonian matrices with strong resonance couplings off-diagonal. Observed torsional levels of the excited vibrational states have been used as data in a least squares optimization of the model parameters, some of which have been estimated by ab initio calculations. The experimentally observed increase in the effective torsional barrier in moving to highly excited OH stretching states has been explained by the model. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The millimeter-wave rotational spectra of the 13C isotopic species of the CCCCH and CCCN radicals and CCC15N were measured and the rotational, centrifugal distortion, and spin-rotation constants determined, as previously done for the normal isotopic species [Gottlieb et al., Astrophys. J. 275, 916 (1983)]. Substitution (rs) structures were determined for both radicals. For CCCN, an equilibrium structure derived by converting the experimental rotational constants to equilibrium constants using vibration–rotation coupling constants calculated ab initio was compared with a large-scale coupled cluster RCCSD(T) calculation. The calculated vibration–rotation coupling constants and vibrational frequencies should aid future investigations of vibrationally excited CCCN. Less extensive RCCSD(T) calculations are reported here for CCCCH. The equilibrium geometries, excitation energies (Te), and dipole moments of the A2Π excited electronic state in CCCN and CCCCH were also calculated. We estimate that Te=2400±50 cm−1 in CCCN, but in CCCCH the excitation energy is very small (Te=100±50 cm−1). Owing to a large Fermi contact interaction at the terminal carbon, hyperfine structure was resolved in 13CCCCH. Measurements of the fundamental N=0→1 rotational transition of CCCCH with a Fourier transform spectrometer described in the accompanying paper by Chen et al., yielded precise values of the Fermi contact and dipole–dipole hyperfine coupling constants in all four 13C species. The Fermi contact interaction is approximately two times larger in CCCN, allowing a preliminary estimation of hyperfine coupling constant bF in 13CCCN and C13CCN from the millimeter-wave rotational spectra. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: In this study we examine the permeating of hydrogen into p-type silicon during low-energy hydrogen ion beam bombardment by monitoring boron doping deactivation. This examination is done for various times and two different exposure temperatures. In addition we explore the effect of temperature during subsequent isochronal anneals on the recovery of silicon exposed to a hydrogen ion beam. As a result of these studies, it is found that there are two distinct permeation regions. Each may be characterized by its own apparent diffusion coefficient, activation energy, and recovery process.

    Notes: Food consumption, gut transit times and assimilation efficiencies of the temperate fishes Lipophrys pholis and Parablennius sanguinolentus (Blenniidae) and Gobius cobitis (Gobiidae. when fed the green alga Ulva lactuca were determined at four temperatures in the laboratory. Food consumption increased and gut transit times decreased with increase in temperature in all three species. Assimilation efficiencies for algal carbon and nitrogen did not vary with temperature in G. cobitis. Carbon but not nitrogen assimilation efficiency varied with temperature in P. sanguinolentus, and both carbon and nitrogen assimilation efficiencies changed broadly with temperature in L. pholis, the most omnivorous of the three fishes. Assimilation efficiencies of all three species were generally within the previously reported ranges for herbivorous marine fishes. These species are thus clearly capable of extracting energy from algal food sources.

    Notes: The marine silverside Atherinops affinis has a short, simple gut and no obvious stomach or physical mechanisms for breaking down algal cells even though its diet in many estuarine habitats is primarily green macroalgae. Silverside from the Upper Newport Bay estuary in southern California had: (1) assimilation efficiencies from a green algal diet of 54% (total organic material), 74% (carbon), 84% (nitrogen), 89% (protein) and 81% (energy), values typical for marine herbivorous fishes; (2) an alkaline gut and no pepsin activity, thus confirming that the fish lacks a stomach; (3) relatively high amylase activity and low trypsin and lipase activities, a digestive enzyme profile expected in a fish consuming a high-carbohydrate, low-protein and low-lipid diet. The fish appears to be capable of functional herbivory and can be classified tentatively as a type III herbivore based on its possible use of pharyngeal jaws for lysis of algal cells.

    Notes: Making use of internally contracted multireference configuration interaction and a large basis set of 213 contracted Gaussian-type orbitals, the barrier height to dissociation in the B˜ 2A1' state of the methyl radical was obtained to be 2417 cm−1, in very good agreement with a recent experimental estimate of 2200 cm−1. The equilibrium bond lengths in the X˜ 2A1‘ and B˜ 2A1' states are 1.076 and 1.109 A(ring), respectively.

    Notes: An octoploid triticale was derived from the F, of a Russian wheat aphid-resistant rye, ‘Turkey 77’, and ‘Chinese Spring’ wheat. The alloploid was crossed to common wheat, and to ‘Imperial’ rye/‘Chinese Spring’ disomic addition lines. F2, progeny from these crosses were tested for Russian wheat aphid resistance and C-banded. A resistance gene(s) was found to be associated with chromosome arm IRS of the ‘Turkey 77’ rye genome. A monotelosomic IRS (‘Turkey 77’) addition plant was then crossed with the wheat cultivar ‘Gamtoos’, which has the 1BL.1RS ‘Veery’ translocation. Unlike the IRS segment in ‘Gamtoos’, the ‘Turkey 77’-derived 1 RS telosome did not express the rust resistance genes Sr31 and Ar26, which could then be used as markers. From the F, a monotelosomic 1 RS addition plant that was also heterozygous for the 1BL. 1 RS translocation was selected and testerossed with an aphid-susceptible common wheat, ‘Inia 66’ Meiotic pairing between the rye arms resulted in the recovery of five euploid Russian-wheat-aphid-resistant plants. One recombinant also retained Sr31 and Lr26 and was selfed to produce translocation homozygotes.
