    Notes: It has been known for a long time that fluidized beds of solid powder in gas may become unstable for certain values of relative and mass fraction, and that this behavior is important in determining the mixing properties of the bed. Several different mechanisms have been proposed for this instability, but no broad consensus is available on which are the dominant ones. That question is studied here by means of a linear stability analysis and a fully nonlinear spectral numerical simulation of a two-fluid model for the bed. Two instabilities are identified, both of which depend on the viscous interaction between phases. A first, one-dimensional, instability breaks the bed into alternating bands of high and lower concentrations, and is due to the interaction of the volumetric coupling between phases and the interphase friction. Another, secondary, two-dimensional instability deforms these slugs, and results in the formation of large bubbles that later coalesce into longitudinal streamers, which seem to be the final state of the bed. Both mechanisms are different from a third one that had been proposed by other investigators, and which depends on the interaction of volumetric coupling and buoyancy forces. This latter mechanism was also identified but found to be unimportant for these flows. Examples of the temporal evolution of slightly perturbed initial fields into the streamer state are given, and the relevant parameter ranges are identified. The similarities and differences with other two-phase flows with comparable volume fractions including bubbly flows, are explained. [Supported by Spain–U.S. Technological Cooperation Committee.]

    Notes: Results of a 1-year intensive monitoring of Vibrio bacteria, as thiosulphate citrate billar salt sucrose (TCBS) counts, in a hatchery for molluscs, are presented. Surface seawater, well seawater, tap water from a freshwater well, microalgae system, including pasteurized well seawater, f/2 medium, starter cultures of eight micro algal species, mass-produced microalgae and compressed air were studied as possible sources of Vibrio. Additionally, recently collected broodstock of the catarina scallop Argopecten ventricosus (Sowerby II 1842) was also subjected for investigation for their possible role in discharging Vibrio during spawning. Efficiency of a cartridge–ultraviolet (UV)-filtration system and of a steam gun employed for sterilizing tanks, hoses and utensils was also determined. Results indicated that Vibrio were present in surface seawater throughout the year. In well seawater these bacteria were only found during the first 5 months soon after construction of the well and before commencement of continuous operations, but not after this period. Vibrio was never detected in pasteurized well seawater, f/2 medium, starter cultures of microalgae and compressed air. However, mass-produced microalgae contained Vibrio, possibly as a result of the use of contaminated tap water for washing and rinsing the fibreglass culture tanks. Scallop broodstock was found to be an important source of Vibrio in the hatchery. Biopsy on female gonads of live organisms demonstrated higher numbers of colony-forming units than male gonads. At spawning, Vibrio was released into water, producing bacterial blooms in tanks after 24 h. The cartridge–UV-filteration system was not sufficient to eliminate the bacteria from seawater, but the steam gun proved to be a good tool to eliminate Vibrio biofilms on tank walls or tools used in the hatchery. Some recommendations are given, which could be useful for other mollusc hatcheries.

    Notes: For decades, research and development efforts have focused on fish cultivation in floating cages. Despite this focus, and the considerable private and public sector resources invested in these systems, there is a scarcity of economic data derived from the great number of variables present in these systems. A reliable way of generating economic studies is through systems modeling that relates biological, environmental, technical, and economic variables. This study presents results from a computer simulation of seabream production in floating cages under two scenarios: one representing conditions in the Mediterranean Sea, and the other in the Atlantic Ocean. A company operating in the Atlantic (Canary Islands, Spain) provided the majority of data, though some of them were provided by the University of Las Palmas, also in the Canary Islands. Given the assumptions in the simulation case study, the production cost for 1 kg of seabream in floating cages in the described systems is US$2.64 in the Mediterranean and US$2.90 in the Atlantic, and the internal rates of return were 27% and 59%, respectively. The results of model sensitivity analysis for both scenarios show that this cultivation system is more sensitive in the Mediterranean than in the Atlantic. This means that changes in system variables convey lower effects on the production and economic results in the Atlantic scenario than in the Mediterranean. In both scenarios, the feed ration size was one of the variables that improved feed conversion rates. It also improved costs and profitability in greater proportions than the other variables. The reduction of the feed ration below the levels recommended in feed tables lowered the feed conversion rate but increased the number of days in the seabream cultivation cycle, leading to higher production costs and lower internal rates of return. The analysis also showed that greater benefits and profitability could be obtained by raising production capacity through increases in the final stocking density of the system.

    Notes: Abstract The sexual or teleomorphic state of yeasts has only been described in a few clinically involved species, mainly those of the Saccharomycetaceae family. With the aim of gathering information on their incidence in human pathology, a study has been made of a total of 2,135 strains isolated from clinical samples and cultivated in McClary agar. From these, 8 strains in teleomorphic state were identified: Kluyveromyces marxianus [1], Pichia anomala [2], Pichia farinosa [1], Pichia membranaefaciens [1] and Saccharomyces cerevisiae [3]. The two strains of P. anomala were responsible for fungemia; K. marxianus and the two strains of S. cerevisiae produced vaginitis; the other strains were oral cavity colonizers.

    Notes: Abstract. We consider constrained discounted-cost Markov control processes in Borel spaces, with unbounded costs. Conditions are given for the constrained problem to be solvable, and also equivalent to an equality-constrained (EC) linear program. In addition, it is shown that there is no duality gap between EC and its dual program EC*, and that, under additional assumptions, also EC* is solvable, so that in fact the strong duality condition holds. Finally, a Farkas-like theorem is included, which gives necessary and sufficient conditions for the primal program EC to be consistent.

    Description: The Macapule Lagoon (25º 21' and 25º 24' N; 108º 30' and 108º 45' W) is part of the San Ignacio-Navachiste-Macapule lagoon system, located in the southern region of the Gulf of California (Fig. 1). In 2000, it has been declared an "Area of Reserve and Refuge for Migratory Birds and Wildlife – Gulf of California Islands". This lagoon is very productive due to its location in the Gulf of California (Lluch-Cota et al. 2007). Water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and salinity were measured in situ with an YSI (55-12FT) probe and a portable refractometer (RHS-10ATC). Nutrient (nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate) concentrations were determined in the laboratory during each sampling month using a photometer (YSI, 9500).

    Description: In December 2013, June and December 2014, and July 2015, a total of 123 specimens of L. argentiventris were captured in the Macapule Lagoon with gillnets of 50 mm mesh size. The total length and weight of each specimen were recorded. The liver, stomach, and gutted weight were weighed to the nearest gram (g) and the data used to calculate the following morpho-physiological indices: 1) the Fulton's condition factor (CF) using the equation: CF = W~t~/L~t~3 * 100, where W~t~ = total weight and L~t~ = total length; 2) the hepatosomatic index (HSI) using the equation: HSI = W~h~/W~t~*100, where W~h~ = liver weight and W~t~ = total weight of the individual; and 3) the gastric repletion index (GRI) using the equation GRI = W~s~/W~t~ *100, where W~s~ = stomach weight and W~t~ = total weight. Parameters of the length-weight relationship of L. argentiventris were estimated using the equation: W = aL^b^, where W = weight of the fish (g), L = total length (cm), a = y-intercept or the initial growth coefficient, b = slope or the growth coefficient. Blood samples of 1±0.1 mL were extracted (only of fish larger than 10 cm total length) by caudal puncture with a disposable plastic syringe containing 0.5 mL of heparinized solution (Sigma-Aldrich). The blood samples were centrifuged at 9,500 g at 4ºC during 10 minutes to separate the blood cells from the plasma. Total protein concentrations were determined following Bradford's method (1976), which is based on the reaction of the amino groups with the dye Coomassie Blue G-250. Triglycerides, glucose, and cholesterol concentrations were determined with colorimetric commercial kits Randox, U.K (Apún-Molina et al., 2015);. Absorbance was determined with a microplate reader (Multiskan Go, Thermo Scientific UV, United States) and concentrations were calculated from a standard solution of substrates.
