    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Gas hydrates are icelike materials that form when specific conditions of temperature, pressure, and gas composition are simultaneously satisfied. Among the first descriptions of gas hydrates under natural conditions was that of Hammerschmidt (1940), who found them in pipelines used to transport natural gas. Milton (1976) indicates that conditions are suitable for the presence of gas hydrates in areas affected by permafrost and cites studies suggesting that large quantities of gas exist in hydrate form.

    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Sediments collected from three continental slope sites of Leg 67 have been examined for total organic carbon content and amount of the sterols beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol. The amount of beta-sitosterol relative to stigmasterol is found to increase landward in the sediment, despite differing ages of the samples studied. The ratio of beta-sitosterol to stigmasterol in near-shore sediments is proposed as a source proximity indicator.

In:  Supplement to: Harrison, William E; Hesse, Reinhard; Gieskes, Joris M (1982): Relationship between sedimentary facies and interstitial water chemistry of slope, trench, and Cocos Plate Sites from the Middle America Trench Transect, Active Margin off Guatemala, Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 67. In: Abouin, J; von Huene, R; et al. (eds.), Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project (U.S. Govt. Printing Office), 67, 603-614, https://doi.org/10.2973/dsdp.proc.67.129.1982
    Publication Date: 2023-06-27
Description: Interstitial water chemistry has proved to be a sensitive indicator for early diagenetic reactions, particularly those related to organic matter oxidation. Downhole chemical variations in the pore waters from Deep Sea Drilling Project Holes 496 and 497 on the Middle America Trench slope off Guatemala are anomalous because both salinity and chlorinity show strong decreases to half the values of seawater, and d18O values become positive (maximum of about +2.5% at the bottom of the holes). These observations are explained in terms of dilution of pore waters after retrieval as a result of decomposition of the gas hydrates before removal of pore waters by shipboard squeezing techniques. In all holes, except Hole 495 (drilled in pelagic sediments), decomposition of organic matter leads to rapid sulfate depletion and subsequent methane generation. Associated with methane generation are large increases in alkalinity and dissolved ammonia. The latter component causes ion exchange reactions with clay minerals, which results in maxima in magnesium and perhaps potassium. At greater depths, as yet unidentified reactions cause the removal of magnesium. Especially in the deeper Trench Sites 499 and 500, rapid variations in calcium, magnesium, and alkalinity occur in turbidite sequences.

Description: Unlike many cruises of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Leg 48 was scientifically planned to drill a number of sites to systematically address the problems of passive margin evolution. Site 400 was drilled at the foot of the Meriadzek Escarpment of North Biscay in 4399 meters depth. The site was located in a half-graben forming part of a succession of tilted and rotated fault blocks near the continent/ocean boundary. Site 401 was situated on the planated edge of a tilted fault-block underlying the southern edge of the Meriadzek Terrace on the north Biscay margin. Site 402 was located on the upper slope of the northern continental margin of the Bay of Biscay. The main objectives were to establish the presence or absence of shallow water Upper Cretaceous beds, and to penetrate pre-Aptian synrift sediments and the upslope equivalent of the deep water Albian-Aptian carbonaceous mudstones penetrated at Hole 400A.
