Notes: Abstract  This study was aimed at making a quantitative evaluation of the biomass, carbohydrates and mineral nutrients partitioning in the canopy of aspen (Populus tremula L.) growing in a forest stand. Tree canopy biomass was divided into ten equal horizontal layers and the material for the study was sampled from all canopy layers. The results indicated that the specific leaf mass and the dry matter content increased but the area of leaves decreased toward the top of the canopy. The content of the non-structural carbohydrates depended largely on the position of the leaves in the canopy and the N, P and K contents in the leaves, reaching a maximum in the upper canopy layers better exposed to light. Regression analysis showed a linear relationship between the leaf mass per area and the percentage of dry matter on the one hand and the content of carbohydrates, N, P and K in the canopy on the other.

Notes: Abstract Ionization-diffusion mechanisms to understand the first ionization potential (FIP) fractionation as observed in the solar corona and the solar wind are reviewed. The enrichment of the low-FIP elements (〈10 eV) compared to the high-FIP elements, seen in e.g. slow and fast wind or polar plumes, is explained. The behaviour of the heavy noble gases becomes understandable. The absolute fractionation, i.e. in relation to hydrogen, can be calculated and fits well to the measurements. The theoretical velocity-dependence of the fractionation will with used to determine the velocities of the solar wind in the chromosphere.

Notes: Summary The C-band length of human chromosome 1 in prophase and prematurely condensed interphase chromosomes is relatively shorter than in metaphase chromosomes. However, even in chromosomes with the same degree of contraction the absolute length of the C-band varies considerably. This allocyclic behaviour of human constitutive heterochromatin has to be kept in mind if C-bands of different individuals are compared.

Notes: Abstract Gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analyses of pheromone gland extracts of female nettle caterpillars, Setora nitens, revealed four compounds that consistently elicited responses from male moth antennae. Retention indices on three fused silia columns (DB-5, DB-23, and DB-210) of two EAD-active compounds were almost identical to those of (E)-9-dodecenal (E9–12 : Ald) and (E)-9,11-dodecadienal (E9,11–12 : Ald), two pheromone components previously identified in congeneric Setothosea asigna. However, comparative GC, GC-EAD, and GC-mass spectrometry of extracted S. nitens compounds and authentic standards revealed that the candidate pheromone components were (Z)-9-dodecenal (Z9–12 : Ald) and (Z)-9,11-dodecadienal (Z9,11–12 : Ald). The two other EAD-active compounds in pheromone gland extracts proved to be the corresponding alcohols to these aldehydes. In field-trapping experiments in Tawau, Malaysia, synthetic Z9–12 : Ald and Z9,11–12 : Ald at a 1 : 1 ratio, but not singly, attracted male S. nitens. Attractiveness of these two aldehydes could not be enhanced through the addition of their corresponding alcohols. Whether these differences in pheromone biology and chemistry between S. nitens and S. asigna are sufficient to prevent cross-attraction of heterospecific males or whether nonpheromonal mechanisms are required to maintain reproductive isolation is currently being studied.

Notes: Abstract Gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) analyses of female nettle caterpillar, Setothosea asigna, pheromone gland extracts revealed seven antennally active compounds. Based on their retention indices on three fused silica columns (DB-5, DB-23, and DB-210), these compounds were hypothesized and, through comparative GC, GC-EAD and GC-mass spectrometry with authentic standards, confirmed to be Δ10-undecenal, dodecanal, (E)-9-dodecenal (E9–12:Ald), (Z)-9-dodecenal, (E)-9-dodecen-1-ol, (E)-9,11-dodecadienal (E9,11–12:Ald), and (E)-9,11-dodecadienol. E9–12:Ald and E9,11–12:Ald were most abundant in female S. asigna pheromone extracts. In field trapping experiments in Palembang, Indonesia, synthetic E9–12: Ald and E9,11–12:Ald at a 1:1 ratio, but not singly, attracted S. asigna males. Attractiveness of these two aldehydes could not be enhanced further through the addition of their corresponding alcohols and/or other aldehydic candidate pheromone components. Use of E9–12:Ald and E9,11–12:Ald for pheromone-based monitoring of S. asigna populations will require lure formulations that minimize pheromone degradation by ultraviolet radiation and atmospheric oxidation.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The reaction of 12 pyridine derivatives with alkaline tetraiodomercurate was investigated and the physical properties and composition of the products have been established. The majority of the studied derivatives yielded compounds of the composition B2HgI2 (B = pyridine), only the 2-amino- and 3-aminopyridine yielded products of the BHgI2 type. Conclusions with respect to the structure of di-iodomercurates have been drawn on the ground of conductometric, ultraviolet and infrared spectrophotometric investigations.
