Description: Dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, the most severe responses to dengue virus (DV) infection, are characterized by plasma leakage (due to increased vascular permeability) and low platelet counts. CLEC5A (C-type lectin domain family 5, member A; also known as myeloid DAP12-associating lectin (MDL-1)) contains a C-type lectin-like fold similar to the natural-killer T-cell C-type lectin domains and associates with a 12-kDa DNAX-activating protein (DAP12) on myeloid cells. Here we show that CLEC5A interacts with the dengue virion directly and thereby brings about DAP12 phosphorylation. The CLEC5A-DV interaction does not result in viral entry but stimulates the release of proinflammatory cytokines. Blockade of CLEC5A-DV interaction suppresses the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines without affecting the release of interferon-alpha, supporting the notion that CLEC5A acts as a signalling receptor for proinflammatory cytokine release. Moreover, anti-CLEC5A monoclonal antibodies inhibit DV-induced plasma leakage, as well as subcutaneous and vital-organ haemorrhaging, and reduce the mortality of DV infection by about 50% in STAT1-deficient mice. Our observation that blockade of CLEC5A-mediated signalling attenuates the production of proinflammatory cytokines by macrophages infected with DV (either alone or complexed with an enhancing antibody) offers a promising strategy for alleviating tissue damage and increasing the survival of patients suffering from dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome, and possibly even other virus-induced inflammatory diseases.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Chen, Szu-Ting -- Lin, Yi-Ling -- Huang, Ming-Ting -- Wu, Ming-Fang -- Cheng, Shih-Chin -- Lei, Huan-Yao -- Lee, Chien-Kuo -- Chiou, Tzyy-Wen -- Wong, Chi-Huey -- Hsieh, Shie-Liang -- GM62116/GM/NIGMS NIH HHS/ -- England -- Nature. 2008 May 29;453(7195):672-6. doi: 10.1038/nature07013. Description: The case was to study the effects of soils with different proportions of feldspathic sandstone and sand on soil stability and organic carbon at 0-30 cm soil depth with four different ratios(C1, C2, C3 and C4), They were used to prepare the composite soil in Fu Ping, Shaanxi Province of China, then the soil aggregates distribution, WASR, MWD, GMD, D valueand and organic carbon content were measured and analysed. The results showed : the soil stability of C1, C2 and C3 was better than C4, i.e., the composition could improve the soil stability. With the increasing of the planting years, the contents of soil aggregates with the size 〉0.25 mm and MWD, GMD and SOC increased for each treatment at 0- 30 cm soil depth, which was contrary to D values. WASR of C2 was significantly higher than others (p

Notes: Abstract Glucocorticoid can induce apoptosis of thymocytes, but its mechanism is not clear yet. In this study, we reported that dexamethasone-induced apoptosis was associated with intracellular alkalinization. Dexamethasone induced a higher percentage of apoptosis in 138 mM than in 50 mM NaCl, total abrogation of apoptosis was noted in NaCl-depleted culture medium. Highest apoptotic rate was observed in medium with pH 7.2, whereas it was partially and completely inhibited at pH 6.5 and pH 6.0, respectively. Intracellular pH was higher in pre-apoptotic thymocytes than non-apoptotic ones. The Na+ /H+ antiporter inhibitor of 5-(N,N'-dimethyl)-amiloride inhibited the dexamethasone-induced increase in pHi and apoptosis of thymocytes. Glucocorticoid antagonist RU486 also blocked the dexamethasone-induced effect. Furthermore, the apoptosis and increase in intracellular pH induced by dexamethasone were inhibited by cycloheximide, actinomycin D. It seems that intracellular pH is increased during the development of thymocyte apoptosis and inhibiting its increment would retard the rate of progression to cell death.

Description: Allyl-β-cyclodextrin is utilized to react with dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride and acrylamide to synthesize a novel water-soluble cationic polymer by redox free-radical polymerization. The optimum polymerization conditions are determined by the single-variable method, while the structure is characterized by Fourier transform infrared and scanning electron microscopy. In rheological experiments the polymer demonstrates superior properties compared to polyacrylamide. Interfacial tension and adsorption experiments prove the excellent performance of the polymer which can effectively decrease the interfacial tension and reduce the surfactant loss caused by stratum absorption in the process of polymer/surfactant flooding, thus indicating the potential application of the polymer for enhancing oil recovery. A novel water-soluble cationic polymer containing β-cyclodextrin was synthesized by redox free-radical polymerization. The new polymer exhibited better rheological properties than polyacrylamide and was able to decrease interfacial tension and effectively reduce the surfactant loss caused by stratum adsorption. These advantages indicate great potential applications in enhancing oil recovery.

Description: Technology of light sensors, due to the wide range of applications, is a dynamically developing branch of both science and industry. This work presents concept of photodetectors based on a metal-ferroelectric-insulator-semiconductor, a structure which has not been thoroughly explored in the field of photodetectors. Functionality of the presented light sensor exploits the effects of photocapacitive phenomena, ferroelectric polarization, and charge trapping. This is accomplished by an interplay between polarization alignment, subsequent charge distribution, and charge trapping processes under given illumination condition and gate voltage. Change of capacitance serves as a read out parameter indicating the wavelength and intensity of the illuminating light. The operational principle of the proposed photocapacitive light sensor is demonstrated in terms of capacitance-voltage and capacitance-time characteristics of an Al/YMnO 3 /SiN x /p-Si structure exposed to green, red, and near infrared light. Obtained results are discussed in terms of optical properties of YMnO 3 and SiN x layers contributing to the performance of photodetectors. Presented concept of light sensing might serve as the basis for the development of more advanced photodetectors.

Description: Residents of Southern China are increasingly concerned about the space heating in winter. The chief aim of the present work is to find a cost-effective way for residential space heating in Shanghai, one of the biggest city in south China. Economic and energy efficiency of three residential space heating ways, including ground source heat pump (GSHP), air source heat pump (ASHP) and wall-hung gas boiler (WHGB), are assessed based on Long-term measured data. The results show that the heat consumption of the building is 120 kWh/m 2 /y during the heating season, and the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) of the GSHP, ASHP and WHGB systems are 3.27, 2.30, 0.88 respectively. Compared to ASHP and WHGB, energy savings of GSHP during the heating season are 6.2 kgce/(m 2 .y) and 2.2 kgce/(m 2 .y), and the payback period of GSHP are 13.3 and 7.6 years respectively. The sensitivity analysis of various factors that affect the payback period is carried out, and...
