    Notes: Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of cubic GaN on SiC films deposited by chemical vapor deposition on Si has been investigated by reflection high-energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and micro-Raman spectroscopy. The wurtzite/zinc-blende ratio, indicative of the material quality, has been found to depend on both the initial substrate roughness and the N/metal ratio impinging on the surface. The results were consistently analyzed by assuming that the MBE growth of cubic GaN is mainly governed by the impinging active N flux, which directly determines the mean-free path of Ga adatoms. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The injection of spin-polarized electrons is presently one of the major challenges in semiconductor spin electronics. We propose and demonstrate a most efficient spin injection using diluted magnetic semiconductors as spin aligners. Time-resolved photoluminescence with a Cd0.98Mn0.02Te/CdTe structure proves the feasibility of the spin-alignment mechanism. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Goldfish Carassius auratus embryos were subjected to artificial ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation (280–320 nm) at various times during development to evaluate the effects on production of anatomically normal larvae. The UVB radiation used in these experiments included a higher proportion of shorter wavelengths compared to the natural spectrum. The development of embryos exposed to UVB for 2 or 4 h at 26 h post-fertilization was severely impaired whereas similar exposures at 50 or 74 h post-fertilization had no effect. A 2 h exposure to UVB commencing at 2 h post-fertilization did not adversely affect embryonic development whereas a 4 h exposure to a lower dose did. At 50 h post-fertilization, when embryos were normally resistant to UVB, denial of access to visible light and UVA before, during and after exposure to UVB caused impairment of development. Analysis of DNA fragment length after incubation with an endonuclease suggested that UVB damage at 50 h was caused by formation of pyrimidine dimers. This study demonstrated that the sensitivity of goldfish embryos to UVB varied during development and that resistance to UVB in later developmental stages included a photorepair mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract The anisotropy ofχ (3) in Poly-bis(p-Toluene Sulfonate) of 2.4-hexadiyne-1.6-diol (PTS) PolyDiAcetylene (PDA) single crystals is investigated by Degenerate Four-Wave Mixing (DFWM) at a wavelength of 720 nm. The symmetries ofχ (3)(−ω;ω, −ω,ω) identify the non-vanishing and independent components of the tensor. For the calculation of the χ(3) elements from the measured values, the anisotropy of both the linear optical index of refraction and the absorption coefficient is included in the coupled wave approach. A magnitude of 10−10 esu is measured for theχ (3) component if all beam polarizations are parallel to the polymer chains. The least upper bound for all other measurable components is estimated to be 10−12 esu. The results for the intensity dependence of the DFWM signal are explained in terms of a thermooptic effect. Measurements on the orientational dependence of the DFWM signal in the samples are carried out, and the influence of the anisotropy of the linear optical parameters on the measured curves is discussed. A method for the preparation of thin layered polymer single crystals of poly-bis (4-ButoxyCarbonyle-Methylene-Urethane) of 4.6-decadiyne-1.1-diol (4-BCMU) and the first DFWM measurements on these samples are presented.

    Notes: Abstract To test the hypothesis that summer low pH, episodic events cause stress and mortality in aquatic organisms including mussels, alum (aluminum sulfate) was added near the point of inflow to Lake 114 in the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario from 3 to 5 July 1984. Lake 114 was at pH 5.9 before the alum addition. The alum produced measured extremes of pH 4.5 and [Al] of 2,237 μg/L near the point of addition. This study examined the effects of the alum addition on ionic concentrations of blood and tissue (gills, adductor muscle, foot and visceral mass) of the floater mussel,Anodonta grandis grandis. Mussels were collected from a second lake, 377, and introduced into Lake 114 at five locations five days before the alum addition. In response to transfer from the oligotrophic, unmanipulated Lake 377 to acidified Lake 114 (pH 5.9), blood of mussels showed a marked elevation of [Ca++], decline in [Mg++] and a temporary increase in [Cl−] but no change in [Na+], [K+] or [SO4 =]. During the alum addition, in mussels near the point source of the alum addition, blood [Na+] and [Cl−] declined and [Ca++] became still more elevated. Mussels suffered no mortality associated with the alum addition and almost no mortality during 26 days in Lake 114. Gill increased in [Al], [Ca], [Mn], declined in [Na] and showed no change in [Cd] in mussels near the alum addition. Visceral mass and adductor muscle also had lower [Na] in mussels near the point of alum addition. We attribute the increase in blood [Ca++] to the dissolution of the Ca stores in the shell and/or mantle of mussels. This would provide protection to the mussels during short-term declines in pH such as spring or summer episodic events. Never-theless, chronic exposure to small decreases in pH by mussels, already near the limits for obtaining sufficient Ca++, might be intolerable. It follows that acidification to the pH of 5.9 of soft water lakes containing mussels would be expected to lead to the loss of A.g. grandis from these waters.

    Notes: Abstract Based on direct monitoring of feeding and growth under field conditions and frequent measurements of respiration and energy content in the laboratory, annual energy budgets were derived for Polinices duplicatus feeding on Mya arenaria at Barnstable Harbor, Massachusetts. The gross growth efficiency (Pg/C) of P. duplicatus was high (35%) and varied inversely with snail size. The proportion of ingested energy expended on respiration (R/C) was modest (44%) and varied directly with snail size and inversely with temperature. The energetic efficiencies of P. duplicatus agreed with the few results available for othe predatory molluscs and differed from most results available for herbivorous and detritivorous molluscs.

    Notes: Summary Erythrosin and light flashes induce voltage transients across bilayer membranes in the presence of transmembrane pH gradients. Fast voltage transients, which rise in 〈50 nsec and fall in ∼500 nsec, are attributed to photo-deprotonation of dye sorbed in the glycerol region of phospholipid membranes. Six other halogenated xanthene dyes induce similar effects, which apparently resulted from triplet states of monoanionic dye. No photo-effects were observed with fluorescein.
