Notes: Considers that when efficiency and effectiveness of systems are measured by the quantity and quality of their output they may be inadequate for the purpose of comparing one system with another. Seeks new criteria and defines entropy, wastivity and quality concepts in relation to system performance. Establishes the interdependence of the three concepts. Proposes that system wastivity should be used as a measure of system performance.

Notes: Summary Displacements and stresses produced by impulsive radial pressure and by impulsive twists have been determined. In the former case total flow of energy across a spherical boundary has been obtained.

Notes: Summary Propagation of Rayleigh type waves in soils is considered in this paper. It is a well known fact that soils do not behave like an ordinary isotropic elastic medium where the ratio of Young's modulus to the modulus of rigidity is much less than that in sandy soils. Considering the velocity of Rayleigh type wave as less than that of distortional wave (which is an observed fact) a probable value of this ratio is determined, and also assuming the value of this ratio based on some experimental data, the velocity of wave propagation in the medium is deduced.

Notes: Summary Coda waves viz. the tail portion of an earthquake record have been observed and analysed byCarder, Macelwane and others. They showed that the periods of such waves increase with the increase of epicentral distances.Carder observed that these waves have very little transverse component so that these may be considered as of the type of Rayleigh waves. RecentlyOmote showed that the Coda waves contain three periodsT 1,T 2,T 3 of whichT 1 increases with epi-central distances as observed by previous observers. ButT 2,T 3 remain constant for all earthquakes from different epicentral distances.Omote tried to explain this phenomenon by considering that the surface of the earth consists of several layers andT 2,T 3 are free oscillation periods of the surface layers.T 1 period has been explained bySezawa and also byJeffreys which has been shown byGutenberg. The author has attempted to explain the periodsT 2,T 3 by considering passage of cracks at the focal region. The Rayleigh wave character of Coda waves and low velocity of such waves have been explained.

Notes: Abstract Copper(II) macrocyclic complexes [Cu(L)Cl2]·2H2O (1,2) have been synthesized from the copper(II)-directed condensation of 4-methyl-2,6-diformylphenol (1) or 4-methyl-2,6-dibenzoylphenol (2) with diamines [1,2-diaminopropane (a), 1,3-diaminopropane (b) and o-phenylenediamine (c)] in EtOH in high yields. These complexes are monomeric, non-electrolytes and paramagnetic, indicating a distorted octahedral geometry around copper, which is supported by i.r., electronic, e.s.r. and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Electrochemical studies of (1) and (2) using c.v. indicate an irreversible cathodic peak (ca. –0.65 to –0.76 V) corresponding to reduction of copper(II) to copper(I) and the diffusion-controlled nature of the electrode process.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis and characterization of the complexes [VO(L)(SO)4]·3H2O (1, 2) obtained from the oxovanadium(IV)-directed condensation of 4-methyl-2,6-di- formylphenol (1) or 4-methyl-2,6-dibenzoylphenol (2) with diamines [ethylenediamine (a), 1,2-diaminopropane (b), 1,3-diaminopropane (c) and o-phenylenediamine (d)] in EtOH in high yields is reported. Characterization of the compounds was based on elemental analyses, conductivity, i.r., electronic and e.p.r. spectra and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Available evidence supports a distorted octahedral environment around vanadium(IV). E.p.r spectra of polycrystalline samples are consistent with an axially compressed d1xy configuration.

Notes: Abstract Copper(II) chalcogenolate complexes [Cu(L-L)2Cl2]middot 2H2O (1,2) have been synthesized from the reaction between1,2-diarylchalcogenolato-o-xylene, o-C6H4(CH2EAr)2, (E=Te or Se; Ar=Ph, C6H4Me-4, C6H4OMe-4 and C6H4OEt-4) generated in situ, and CuCl2middot 2H2O in PhH-EtOH in high yields. These complexes are monomeric, non-electrolyte and paramagnetic, indicating a distorted square-planar geometry around the CuII, which is supported by i.r., electronic, e.s.r. and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Polycrystalline and frozen solutions of the compounds have axial e.s.r. signals and the principal components of the g tensors are reported. Electrochemical studies of (1) and (2) using cyclic voltammetry indicate irreversible cathodic peaks in the 0.55–0.78V versus Ag/AgCl range, corresponding to reduction of CuII to CuI and a diffusion-controlled electrode process.

Notes: Summary Heterobimetallic complexes of the types [Cp2Ti(μ-EAr)2-M(dppe)] (ClO4)2 [(1)–(4); M, E = Ni, Te (1); Ni, Se (2); Pt, Te (3); Pt, Se (4); Ar = Ph (a), C6H4-4-Me (b), C6H4-4-OMe (c), C6H4-4-OEt (d)] and [Cp2Ti(μ-TeAr)2-MCl 2] [M = Pd (5), Pt (6)] were obtained by the reactions of Cp2Ti(EAr)2 with M(dppe)(ClO4)2 and M(PhCN)2Cl2, respectively. While (1), (5) and (6) are stable in the solid state as well as in solution, (2)–(4) undergo dissociation to M(dppe)(EAr)2 and Cp2Ti(ClO4)2 in solution, as shown by multinuclear (31P{1H},195Pt{1H}, 125Te{1H}) n.m.r. studies. The reaction of Cp2Ti(SeAr)2 with M(PhCN)2Cl2, however, leads to the formation of Cp2TiCl2 and a polymeric material [M(SeAr)2] n .
