Notes: Summary The kinetics of the oxidation of hypophosphite ion by platinum(IV) have been studied spectrophotometrically in alkaline medium at different temperatures. The rate increases as the pH increases and the empirical rate law applicable to the reaction is given by:-d[PtIV]/dt = k3[PtIV][H2PO2−][OH−] The rate constant is 2.17×10−3 (l2 mo−2s−1) at 40.5°. The energy and entropy of activation for the reaction are 104.2 kJ mol−1 and 28.5 JK−1mol−1 respectively.

Notes: Summary A collocation technique is used in conjunction with complex variable methods and conformal transformation to determine the elastic bending moments and shear forces in a uniformly loaded infinite flat plate structure, supported at each node of a regular rectangular lattice by rigid rectangular columns of finite dimensions.

Notes: Abstract The two-fold degeneracy of the deformed Hartree-Fock (HF) solutions in thes-d shell suggests the use of a two-determinantal intrinsic state. The validity of this two-determinantal variational method is established in the case of the exactly solvable Lipkin Hamiltonian, for which the usual HF solution is known to be 2 fold degenerate. The approximation of using a two-determinantal intrinsic state turns out to be an exceedingly good one and in general as the particle number and the strength of the interaction increase, the exact solution is rapidly approached. The states of positive (negative) parity which are obtained by projection from the intrinsic two-determinantal state are found to reproduce the exact ground (first excited) state with a high accuracy.

Notes: Abstract Observations have been made in pot cultures on the effect of presoaking seed treatment of Vigna catjang T. 5269 in extract of P. foveolarum. The algal extract on the whole exhibits beneficial effect on the vegetative growth and yield, including length, number and weight of pods; and number and weight of seeds per plant.

Notes: This paper presents the details of a unified numerical algorithm and the associated computer program developed for the efficient determination of natural frequencies and modes of free vibration of structures. Both spinning and nonspinning structures with or without viscous and/or structural damping may be solved by the current procedure; in a addition, the program is capable of solving static problems with multiple load cases as well as the quadratic matric eigenproblem associated with a finite dynamic element structural discretization. A special symmetric matrix decomposition scheme has been adopted for matrix triangularization, which renders the program rather efficient and economical. Also, a novel bisection scheme is described that further accelerates the solution convergence rate, particularly for the case of repeated roots. The associated computer program adopts and out-of-core solution strategy, thereby enabling effective solutions to be achieved for large, complex, practical structures. A complete listing of the program written in FORTRAN V, for the UNIVAC 1100/82 computer, along with the source deck is available for ready use.

Notes: The higher order dynamic correction terms for the stiffness and inertia matrices associated with a triangular plane stress-strain finite dynamic element are developed in detail. Numerical results presented indicate that the adoption of these matrices along with a suitable quadratic matrix eigenproblem solver effects a significant economy in the free vibration solution of structures when compared with the analysis based on the usual finite element procedure.A FORTRAN IV computer program listing of the various relevant element matrices is also presented in the Appendix.

Notes: The paper describes the development of an eight-node plane rectangular finite dynamic element and presents detailed descriptions of the associated numerical formulation involving the higher order dynamic correction terms pertaining to the related stiffness and inertia matrices. Numerical test results of free vibration analyses are presented in detail for the newly developed eight-node element and also the corresponding four-node element in order to make a clear comparison of the relative efficiencies of the corresponding finite element and dynamic element procedures. Such results indicate a superior pattern of solution convergence of the presently developed dynamic element.

Notes: A general digital computer method based on a Sturm sequence procedure is described for determining the natural frequencies and associated modes of undamped free vibration of frames and other structures whose stiffness and mass matrices are of band form. A program which uses the method for the analysis of plane multi-storey building frames is outlined, and numerical results are presented for a simple test case and for a 19-storey frame.
